As part of their continuing community outreach, Girl Scout Troop 2879 from Aurora recently held an e-waste recycling event at three downtown Denver locations. For these events the Girl Scouts partnered up with Metech Recycling who handled the bulk of the end game for the recycling. They promised that all personal date left behind on computers or laptops would be wiped out and up to 95% of all the e-waste collected would be recycling not incinerated or dumped into a landfill. That’s a pretty good goal to aim for.

Like most of these sponsored events there was a dumping charge for the privilege of getting rid of your e-waste. Here the Girl Scouts charged $10 for small TVs and computer monitors, $15 for TVs with screens larger than 20 inches, and $1 for laptops, printers, fax machine, VCRs, keyboards and other small electronics.

You can’t begrudge the Girl Scouts for taking this opportunity to fundraise. However, if you didn’t have the opportunity to make the drop off you would still be stuck with all your old computer gear.
