Aaron Brown and his mechanical engineering students have been turning aluminum soda cans into low cost solar furnaces. The design is fairly simple. Cool air is drawn into the unit from fans at the bottom. That air rises up through the drilled holes in 144 soda cans. Because of its placement, these cans have been collecting heat in the sun. When the air exits at the top of the unit, it is warm and pumped into the home. The cost of the furnace is around $30. That is quite a drop from the traditional furnaces. Although there is a need for supplemental heat at night, during the day, these units can take a room for 60 degrees to 90 degrees in twenty minutes. That’s might impressive by any standard.
