What can you do with 7 million pounds of food waste and yard clippings? If you’re in the Costa Mesa Sanitary District, then that waste can be turned into energy. It’s all part of a new pilot program that is encouraging residents to separate their foods scraps just like they separate their plastics, papers and soda cans. Those 7 million pounds was collected in just the first six months of the program and in a very limited test market. The sanitary department hopes to use the findings of this pilot program to expand into the rest of Costa Mesa and beyond. All of that collected waste is being recycled as fuel for energy that powers the city. It’s a vital step in achieving the goal of zero waste.
