Did you have fun this past July 4th weekend? Apparently there was a lot going on over at the Big Corona State Beach. How can you tell? Probably by the 7.5 tons of trash that was removed the day after.

“July 5th is our largest clean-up day of the year,” wrote Municipal Operations Director Mark Harmon in a report to the city council. “Staff began their shift at 4:30 am to remove signs, delineators, barricades, portable toilets, and assist with beach clean-up…At the Corona Del Mar State Beach, seven Field Maintenance crew members collected over 7.5 tons of trash and debris that had been left on the ground and in nearby trash containers at the park.”

Keep in mind that was just in one park. Over in West Newport, it took 27 crew members to pick up all the trash along with mechanical street sweepers that cleaned up 9 cubic yards of debris from the streets. On a typical pick up along the Balboa Peninsula there is a 120 tons of trash picked up from residents. After the 4th that amount swelled to 189 tons. Bottom line, there is a lot of trash to clean up. How much trash do you think you make in a weekend? Going by the average around eight pounds. Over the course of a year, that number can swell to close to a ton of garbage made just by you.
