Did you have a good gardening season? This past summer was certainly proof positive that we’re living through some wacky weather but that doesn’t mean home gardeners didn’t manage to eke out a decent little harvest for themselves. As winter approaches, the temptation is to kind of let the gardens wither back into the ground and have Mother Nature take care of it all. However, most professional garden experts recommend that you clean up the spent garden debris to help diminish the occurrence of fungal disease. Worst case scenario would have those debris piles becoming a breeding ground for insects. Yes, there are bugs in the winter!
The suggestion is to deep plow that debris and get down to the roots. When roots are exposed to freezing temperatures there is a greater chance of reducing the emergence of plant pests. You could plant what is referred to as a “cover crop.” This would be something like rye grain, wheat or crimson clover. These plants will reduce erosion and provide nutrients for the soil. When these plants mature just plow them over about six weeks before you start the spring planting. We can all agree that it’s a lot of work to keep a garden growing and healthy but there are plenty of rewards to be had from all that work.
