However, not everything can be recycled, which is why it’s important to stay informed on the recycling dos and don’ts. First things first, here’s what can be recycled in San Francisco:
● Most paper and cardboard should be recycled in the green bin, including newspapers, cardboard boxes, and food cartons. If the cardboard still has food on it, like empty pizza boxes, just put it in the blue composting bin instead. Shredded paper can also be recycled, but you’ll have to put it in a sealed paper bag before placing it in the bin.
● Rigid or hard plastics like soda bottles, CD cases, buckets, toys, and plastic food containers also go in the green recycling bin. Before you throw it in there, however, check to see if it’s labeled “compostable.” If it is, throw it in the blue bin instead.
● Styrofoam packing peanuts can’t be thrown in the recycling bin, but you can still recycle them by putting them in a bag and bringing them to your nearest recycling center.
● Metal cans and foil go in the green bin, including aluminum cans and tinfoil.
● Most glass can be recycled, including jars and bottles. Just toss them in the green bin with the rest of the recycling.
Even with the recycling ordinances, there are still some things that will have to go in the black trash bin for the landfill. Here’s what can’t be recycled in San Francisco:

How Does Recycling Work in San Francisco?
In 2009, the city of San Francisco passed the Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance. That means it’s actually a requirement for all residents of the city to place anything recyclable or compostable into the proper receptacles to keep it out of the landfills. The way it works is pretty straightforward.
The city provides all residents with three 32-gallon bins – one green, one blue, and one black. The green bin is for anything recyclable, like cans and bottles. The materials in the green bin will be sent to factories to be remade into new products, making sure that nothing gets wasted. The blue bin is for food, plants, and other organic materials that can be composted. The contents of this bin will be sent to local farms to help create nutrient-rich soil. The black bin is for trash, and the contents will go straight to the landfill.

Besides following the recycling rules, there are plenty of other simple things you can do to reduce the waste generated by your lifestyle. You’ve probably heard this slogan before, but the best place to start is by following the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
The first R has to do with cutting down on the items you buy and consume. Try to replace frequent disposable purchases like plastic bags with reusable options, and keep track of how much packaging trash your purchases are generating. You don’t have to live like a monk, but being mindful about your consumption is a great first step.
The second R means replacing disposable purchases with reusable ones as often as possible, but it can also mean considering where you make new purchases as well. Buy used objects instead of new ones, for example, or find clothes at a thrift shop instead of ordering them online. You can also repurpose old or broken items through DIY projects.
The third R obviously means following the recycling guidelines set out by the city of San Francisco, but there are other ways to recycle trash.
