San Francisco Recycling: The Complete Guide to Dos and Don’ts

Junk King San Francisco

The further we get into the 21st century, the more we realize just how important recycling really is. Taking care of our planet is a huge priority these days, and at Junk King San Francisco, we feel that environmental considerations should be a part of any business plan moving forward. That’s why we pride ourselves on being the most ecologically friendly company in the junk removal industry. Everything we pick up, whether it’s construction debris, furniture, or just plain old trash, gets taken to one of our sorting centers to be recycled. If any piece of your junk can be reused, we make sure it will be.

Recycling doesn’t just end with junk removal, however. It’s also important that we all do our part, not just as a business, but also as individuals. San Francisco is one of the most progressive cities in North America, and that extends to recycling as well. Here are a few guidelines you can use to make sure you’re taking full advantage of the bay area’s robust recycling program.

What are the Dos and Don’ts of Recycling in San Francisco?

The Bay Area has some of the most robust recycling systems in the country, which is good news for anyone who cares about the environment. In fact, in 2009, San Francisco passed new recycling regulations, making it mandatory for all residents of the city. However, not everything can be recycled, which is why it’s important to stay informed on the recycling dos and don’ts. First things first, here’s what can be recycled in San Francisco:

● Most paper and cardboard should be recycled in the green bin, including newspapers, cardboard boxes, and food cartons. If the cardboard still has food on it, like empty pizza boxes, just put it in the blue composting bin instead. Shredded paper can also be recycled, but you’ll have to put it in a sealed paper bag before placing it in the bin.

● Rigid or hard plastics like soda bottles, CD cases, buckets, toys, and plastic food containers also go in the green recycling bin. Before you throw it in there, however, check to see if it’s labeled “compostable.” If it is, throw it in the blue bin instead.

● Styrofoam packing peanuts can’t be thrown in the recycling bin, but you can still recycle them by putting them in a bag and bringing them to your nearest recycling center.

● Metal cans and foil go in the green bin, including aluminum cans and tinfoil.

● Most glass can be recycled, including jars and bottles. Just toss them in the green bin with the rest of the recycling.

Even with the recycling ordinances, there are still some things that will have to go in the black trash bin for the landfill. Here’s what can’t be recycled in San Francisco:

● Metallic-backed paper, like wrapping paper

● Waxed cardboard

● Wood

● Plastic bags, wrappers, and plastic film

● Scrap metal

● Broken mirrors or windows

It can be a little tricky to keep all the categories straight, but you’ll get the hang of it with a little practice. If you have trash that can’t go in the recycling bin but you’d prefer to keep it out of the landfill, Junk King San Francisco will take anything on this list and more.

How Does Recycling Work in San Francisco?

Recycling San Francisco

In 2009, the city of San Francisco passed the Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance. That means it’s actually a requirement for all residents of the city to place anything recyclable or compostable into the proper receptacles to keep it out of the landfills. The way it works is pretty straightforward.

The city provides all residents with three 32-gallon bins – one green, one blue, and one black. The green bin is for anything recyclable, like cans and bottles. The materials in the green bin will be sent to factories to be remade into new products, making sure that nothing gets wasted. The blue bin is for food, plants, and other organic materials that can be composted. The contents of this bin will be sent to local farms to help create nutrient-rich soil. The black bin is for trash, and the contents will go straight to the landfill.

As of 2021, approximately 80% of the waste generated by San Franciscans ends up in either the green or the blue bin. That’s the highest recycling rate in all of North America, and the city hopes to reach a rate of 100% as soon as possible.

Reusable vs. Single-use Items – Which is Better for the Environment?

When it comes to reusable items vs. single-use items, it seems like the answer should be pretty clear. However, some recent studies have found surprising results. While reusable versions of items like straws, sandwich bags, and coffee cups have become popular as a way to avoid the ecological damage from single-use plastics, the overall effects on the environment aren’t always positive. Some reusable objects never reach a break-even point because of the energy and materials used to make them.

The upshot of all this is that you should buy reusable items when you can, but make sure to compare materials as well. Consuming items made of sustainable materials is just as important as cutting down on overall consumption when it comes to protecting the environment.

There is one significant outlier here, however – e-waste. Because of the rare and valuable ores used in many common household electronics, it’s almost always better to reuse them if you can. Once you’ve finished with your electronics, make sure to take them to a recycling center or have an environmentally-friendly junk removal service like Junk King take care of them for you.

A Brief History of San Francisco’s Trash and Recycling Systems

Today San Francisco has the highest recycling rates of any city in the US, but that wasn’t always the case. Recycling services in San Francisco were fairly weak through the first half of the 20th century, with the advent of packing trucks driving the recycling rates to their lowest point in the 1950s. However, starting in the 1970s and early ’80s, the city began to focus more on recycling.

The creation of the “Fantastic Three” colored bin system in 1999 and the 2009 Mandatory Composting and Recycling Ordinance were major landmarks in recycling, and the city now has a recycling diversion rate of 80%. We’re proud to add Junk King’s recycling program to the list of successful waste management efforts in the city.

How to Reduce Waste by Following a Few Simple Rules

Besides following the recycling rules, there are plenty of other simple things you can do to reduce the waste generated by your lifestyle. You’ve probably heard this slogan before, but the best place to start is by following the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

The first R has to do with cutting down on the items you buy and consume. Try to replace frequent disposable purchases like plastic bags with reusable options, and keep track of how much packaging trash your purchases are generating. You don’t have to live like a monk, but being mindful about your consumption is a great first step.

The second R means replacing disposable purchases with reusable ones as often as possible, but it can also mean considering where you make new purchases as well. Buy used objects instead of new ones, for example, or find clothes at a thrift shop instead of ordering them online. You can also repurpose old or broken items through DIY projects.

The third R obviously means following the recycling guidelines set out by the city of San Francisco, but there are other ways to recycle trash. At Junk King San Francisco, we recycle everything we possibly can, including some objects like broken mirrors and scrap metal that the city won’t take. For Junk King, recycling has been a priority since day one, so we make sure to find the right home for every piece of junk we bring in.

What Goes Where?

There are relatively few limits on recycling in San Francisco, but there are certain things that have to go into the landfill. Most paper and cardboard belong in the green bin, including newspaper, cardboard boxes, and egg cartons. Shredded paper can also be recycled, but should be put in sealed paper bags first. However, metallic-backed paper, like wrapping paper, has to go to the landfill, along with wood and waxed cardboard. Any cardboard with food on it, like pizza boxes, should go in the compost bin.

Any rigid or hard plastics can also be recycled, including plastic bottles, buckets, CD and DVD cases, toys, and food containers. Styrofoam peanuts can also be recycled but should be taken directly to a recycling center rather than just tossed in the bin. Plastic bags, wrappers, or film belongs in the landfill, and any plastic labeled “compostable” can go in the compost bin.

Most metals can be recycled as well, like aluminum cans and foil, tin cans, and paint cans. Scrap metal can’t be recycled through the city, although Junk King San Francisco will both haul and recycle it at your convenience.

Finally, any glass bottles and jars can also go in the recycling bin. Mirrors and windows, however, will have to go into the trash or can be hauled away by a junk removal company like Junk King.

It can be a little tricky sometimes to keep all these categories straight, but it’s worth making the effort for the good of the environment. Of course, if you need to have trash or materials hauled away by Junk King, we’ll do all the sorting for you in one of our sorting centers in the city.

What About Composting?

Composting is the other big piece of the recycling puzzle. For the most part, any food is going to end up in the blue composting bin, although there are a few guidelines. Food, food-soiled paper, and vegetation all belong in the composting bin, along with cotton balls, pet fur, compostable plastics, and small pieces of wood or crates. Cat litter, textiles, cooking oil, corks, diapers, dirt, rocks, flower pots, liquids, and plywood won’t be accepted.

What Does Junk King San Francisco Take?

If you have enough trash that you need to bring in a junk removal service like Junk King, the limitations are going to be a lot shorter. In fact, Junk King will take anything and everything you have short of toxic waste. That means trash, debris from construction, raw materials, and even large objects like furniture, appliances, or mattresses. Junk King also takes electronics, including televisions, computers, and monitors. We’ll even haul away yard waste like branches, leaves, and dirt.

If you’re looking for a junk removal company that shares your values on environmental protection, then Junk King San Francisco is the business for you. Despite taking in mainly trash and other objects that recycling centers won’t take, we still manage to recycle or donate well over half of what we haul away. This includes items like mattresses or refrigerators that most municipalities just toss in the landfill. When Junk King was founded all the way back in 2005, it was envisioned as the first recycling-based junk removal business in the country, and we’ve stayed true to that vision to this day.

Junk Removal San Francisco : Wise Considerations Before Hiring

Chances are that at some time during your life, you will probably find that your home or business has obtrusively become filled with numerous junk items. In fact, one recent survey determined that more than one-fourth of Americans CURRENTLY think their home is at least somewhat cluttered. The October 2014 survey found that 6 percent of American adults said their house or apartment is “very” cluttered, and 21 percent classified their space as “somewhat” cluttered. Similarly, another study found that 75 percent of struggling small business owners believed that being disorganized was the direct cause of some of their productivity losses.

Keeping our homes and businesses organized, structured, and de-cluttered isn’t just a Feng Shui trend. Rather, organized and de-cluttered spaces are extremely important for our mental health, higher productivity levels, and higher levels of comfort. Unfortunately, in our consumer-driven society, it is becoming almost “second nature” to accumulate items that take up an enormous amount of valuable space in the places we occupy. This is part of the reason why the self-storage industry has grown to an incredible size, posting almost $40 billion in annual revenue.

One of the biggest problems that individuals, homeowners, and businesses face when trying to de-clutter their homes or businesses is finding a way to physically get rid of the excess junk they have laying around. Trying to haul a 300 pound couch located on the second floor of your home is probably not going to be easy. Furthermore, if you don’t have a huge trailer and a powerful 4×4 pickup truck to haul it, taking your excess junk to a local recycling or donation center is probably not going to be feasible in your Toyota Prius.

That´s why professional junk removal companies exist: to help individuals and businesses efficiently get rid of the excess junk that is cluttering their spaces. The majority of junk removal San Francisco companies can help you get rid of a variety of junk and waste items. However, there are serious differences and disparities in how these companies operate, and the values that define their business ethic. In this short article, we take an in-depth look at five questions that every San Francisco individual, homeowner, and business owner needs to ask before hiring a professional junk removal service.

What is the Company Going to Do with Your Junk?

The first thing that you need to consider when hiring a professional junk removal service is what they company is eventually going to do with the trash and waste that they haul away. Our nation´s landfills are quickly filling up, and improper municipal solid waste management is a leading cause of several environmental problems including:

  • The leaching of dangerous toxic chemicals into watersheds and ground water sources;
  • Greenhouse gas emissions through landfill gas, which is mostly comprised of methane;
  • Air pollution and contamination affecting local communities.

Unfortunately, many junk removal companies only make token efforts to responsibly dispose of the junk items that they pick up. Junk King of San Francisco, however, is proud to say that at least 60 percent of the junk items that we pick up are either recycled, composted, repurposed, or donated. We have a huge network of relationships with local recycling centers, non-profit organizations, and other businesses that work to ensure that your junk stays out of local landfills and contributes to the goal of San Francisco becoming America´s first “Zero Waste” city. We are able to help you get rid of regular trash, construction debris, household junk, yard waste, small and medium sized appliances, e-waste, furniture and virtually anything that is not classified as toxic waste in an environmentally friendly manner.

Is This Going to Take a Long Time?

When you are planning to hire a junk removal service, the last thing you want is for the company to give you a pickup date that is several days (or even weeks) away. Getting rid of your excess junk should be an efficient and easy process that allows you to reclaim your space and enjoy the benefits of a clutter-free space. Junk King of San Francisco offers unparalleled customer service. You can contact us by phone, by text message, or online to quickly get an idea of how much our service is going to cost. Once you have agreed to our pricing, you simply have to pick a date and a two-hour window for pickup. In most cases, our junk removal professionals will be able to pick up and haul away your junk on the same day you call us! Furthermore, we will give you a call 15 to 30 minutes before arriving so that you know exactly when we will be arriving.

How Much Work Will I Have to Do?

One of the reasons that so many people hire junk removal companies is because they don’t want to do all of the heavy lifting that comes with de-cluttering your space. Bulky junk items like beds, mattresses, couches, refrigerators, old hot tubs, and others can easily weigh several hundred pounds. Trying to haul those out to the curb can easily result in a slipped disk or a potentially dangerous fall. With Junk King of San Francisco, the only “lifting” you will have to do is to point to the items that you want removed. Our junk removal technicians will do all the heavy lifting for you.

Furthermore, we also offer dumpster rental for individuals and businesses that need extra time to go through their stuff and decide what stays and what goes. With our dumpster rentals, we will help you install the dumpster in the most convenient spot on your property and come to pick it up whenever it’s filled and ready to be hauled away.

Is This Junk Removal Service Going to Cost Me and Arm and a Leg?

When choosing the best junk removal service, you should definitely prioritize companies that offer fair and transparent pricing mechanisms. There is nothing worse than paying double what you had budgeted for junk removal because the pricing wasn’t upfront and honest. With Junk King of San Francisco, we offer free quotations over the phone or via text message. Simply send us a text with photos of the items you need removed, and we´ll send you a free quote. We even offer free, on-site quotes for larger jobs so that you know exactly what you´ll be spending if you do decide to hire us.

Many junk removal companies base their charges on the size or volume of the truck that they send for the junk pickup. This means that they sometimes end up charging higher prices because they send a large truck for small jobs. Junk King of San Francisco was started back in 2005 out of a garage in San Carlos. Over 15 years later, our business now has eight trucks and serves thousands of customers across the entire city of San Francisco. We have the right size truck for all different types of jobs and are confident that we offer the most affordable pricing for junk removal services.

Does the Company Have a Good Reputation?

Lastly, you also should look at the consumer reviews for the junk removal company that you are considering hiring. In the day and age of the Internet, independent customer reviews will often offer the truest glimpse into how a company operates. Besides offering the most competitive junk removal prices on the market, we are also proud to say that our customer service is second to none. We have a 5-star rating on Yelp, with well over 50 reviews and we can also guarantee to beat any written estimate.

Dumpster Rental in San Francisco to Deal with C&D Debris

When most of us think about the issues of trash and pollution, we probably think about plastic bags, Styrofoam cups, and other types of packaging waste that we throw away on a daily basis. Though these types of trash certainly contribute to our overall waste problem, another source of waste is much more problematic in terms of total volume.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), around “600 million tons of C&D debris were generated in the United States in 2018, which is more than twice the amount of generated municipal solid waste (MSW).” To put that into perspective, the waste from construction and demolition sites was more than double the amount of all the waste taken away by municipal garbage trucks across the country.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris is a type of waste from construction sites. The most common types of C&D debris includes steel, wood products, drywall and plaster, brick and clay tile, asphalt shingles, concrete, and asphalt concrete, glass from windows and doors, used carpeting and wood flooring, and other common building materials. C&D debris is generated both by individual homes and larger commercial building projects. It also comes from massive infrastructure engineering projects such as from the construction of roads and bridges.

This short article will analyze some of the specific challenges that come with C&D debris in the San Francisco area. We then look at one simple strategy that allow individuals, homeowners, and business owners to responsibly deal with the C&D debris that they generate.

C&D - Yellow Jack hammer unearthing ground and Creating Construction Debris

Construction Projections in the San Francisco Area

Across the country and around the world, new homes, businesses, and other infrastructure will need to be built in the coming decades to properly house and service our growing population. Furthermore, as the building sector attempts to reduce its emissions via low carbon and zero carbon building techniques, major retrofits of existing buildings will most likely also begin to ramp up. Advances in energy efficient building techniques fortunately means that our built infrastructure will reduce its carbon footprint. On the other hand, new building projects (and demolition projects) inevitably result in enormous amounts of C&D debris.

In the San Francisco region alone, new house construction should continue to grow in the coming years. For much of the past three decades, the San Francisco Bay Area has faced a serious affordable housing shortage. In October of 2015, San Francisco had the highest rents of any major US city, and ex-mayor Ed Lee called the shortage a “housing crisis.” As housing prices drop in the post-COVID world, new construction of single family and multi-family housing units should continue to grow.

Furthermore, the state of California is continually implementing new legislation regarding renewable energy sources and energy efficient building techniques in an attempt to reduce the carbon emissions of the building industry. This legislation will also continue to increase the demand on the construction sector, as energy efficient retrofits become more common.

Both new construction and renovations on existing infrastructure will certainly create an enormous amount of construction and demolition debris that needs to be properly disposed of. Unlike other towns and cities that allow C&D debris to be sent to the landfills, the Bay area is one of the national leaders in requiring the recycling and proper disposal of this type of debris.

The San Francisco Department of the Environment states that “by law, C&D debris material removed from a project must be recycled or reused. No C&D debris can be taken to landfill or put in the garbage.” This ordinance, in effect since 2006, has drastically reduced the pressure on area landfills. It has also forced local builders and others in the industry to increase the amount of recycled materials incorporated into their building projects, thus contributing to the growing Circular Economy that is emerging in the Bay area.

Renting a Dumpster to Responsibly (and Legally) Deal with C&D Debris from Your Construction Project

According to the San Francisco Ordinance No.27-06 that took effect on July 1, 2006, C&D debris material is required by law to be separated by type at the job site (source-separated) for reuse or recycling (such as metal, wood, drywall, cardboard, concrete, etc.) must be taken to a facility that reuses or recycles those materials.

Renting a dumpster from Junk King of San Francisco is one of the best ways to be in compliance with this law. We are the Bay Area´s number one-rated professional junk company. Besides offering full-service junk removal for everything that is not classified as toxic waste, we also have several different sizes of dumpsters that we rent to individuals and businesses in San Francisco.

Whether you are an individual homeowner doing a DIY renovation on your home, or are large contractor company building a new multi-family condo, our professional customer service representatives can help you determine what type of dumpster rental is best to help you efficiently deal with the C&D debris that you accumulate. Besides offering several different sizes of dumpster (as measured by the cubic yard), we can also help you find the best place to locate your dumpster. You can read a detailed explanation of the ordinance regulating the placement of dumpster rentals and debris boxes in San Francisco here.

Once you have hired a dumpster from Junk King of San Francisco, you simply need to let us know when you need us to come and pick up the contents. Our professional junk removal technicians will do all the heavy lifting and hauling. Furthermore, we comply with all local legislation that ensures your construction and demolition debris is promptly taken to a Registered Facility where it is recycled, donated, and kept out of area landfills.

A Quest to Become a Zero Waste City: Junk Pick Up San Francisco

Several years ago, the ex-mayor of San Francisco, Edwin Lee proclaimed that San Francisco had achieved an impressive 80 percent diversion rate of waste heading to landfills. According to the press release, “Recycling and composting is not only good for our environment, it is also good for our economy,” said Mayor Lee. ”Recycling alone creates 10 times more jobs than simply sending refuse to the landfill, and I applaud Recology, the Department of Environment and San Franciscans for reaching this record milestone of 80 percent diversion.”

The city of San Francisco is widely regarded as the national leader in the campaign to achieve a zero waste future. The process of achieving an 80 percent landfill diversion rate is testament to the public investment in recycling and compost programs. Furthermore, the city´s waste reduction programs that focus on reuse and repurposing waste is another strategy helping to keep trash out of area landfills. The collective efforts of the city government, local businesses, and every individual citizen in the city of San Francisco is why San Francisco was named the Greenest City in North America and receive a perfect score for resource recovery and recycling category in the 2011 Siemens Green City Index.

Despite these important advances and achievements, a closer look at the city´s waste management programs shows that individuals, homeowners, and business owners continue to generate large amounts of trash that do eventually end up in landfills. In this short article, we take an in-depth look at how the city achieved its 80 percent landfill diversion rate, and how the junk pickup services offered by Junk King of San Francisco can help the city advance even farther on its quest to become America´s first Zero Waste city.

Pile of old Furniture and home debris

The Number Crunching Needed to Achieve an 80 Percent Landfill Diversion Rate

Let´s start with the well-known figure related to the amount of trash that each and every individual in the United States produces on a daily basis. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average person in the United States produces around 4.4 pounds of trash per day. In the state of California, the average amount of trash produced per person is slightly higher at 4.7 pounds of trash each day (as per 2016 statistics). On a nationwide level, only about one-third of that trash ends up getting recycled, composted reused, or repurposed, meaning that each person is responsible for around 2.9 pounds of trash ending up in landfills or incinerators every day.

One would think that the 80 percent landfill diversion rate for the city of San Francisco would mean that 80 percent of the trash we produce gets either composted or recycled. But´s let´s take a closer look at the numbers.

Firstly, it is important to state that the city of San Francisco has a much higher “per capita waste-generation rate” with an average of 7.5 pounds of waste and recyclables being generated per person per day. That is almost 60 percent more trash per person than the national average. The higher standards of living in the Bay area unfortunately lead to higher levels of consuming, thus putting more stress on the city´s waste management systems.

This might not be a serious problem if 80 percent of that trash did get recycled, reused, or repurposed, which would leave just 1.5 pounds of trash heading to local landfills or incinerators. Unfortunately, that isn’t what happens. San Francisco’s 80 percent diversion rate is actually the product of how the San Francisco Department of Environment counts and calculates the city´s recyclable material. The city certainly does have an impressive program to recycle everyday post-consumer products made from paper, metal, glass, and plastics; as well as an exemplary organic waste composting program. However, to achieve that impressive 80 percent figure, the city includes large quantities of very heavy construction materials such as excavated fill and rubble, which are subsequently reused as infill and road base. Furthermore, the city´s Department of Environment also counts the “recycling” of bio-solids which are applied to agricultural land as part of their diversion total.

Free Construction Debris Removal Guide

Construction and debris (C&D) and bio-solid waste certainly accounts for a major amount of waste that unfortunately continues to accumulate in landfills across the country. C&D debris is actually more than double the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) on a national level. The fact that the City of San Francisco is making efforts to keep those elements out of landfills should certainly be applauded. However, it is important to understand that the 80 percent diversion rate does NOT mean that 80 percent of municipal solid waste (MSW) is either recycled, reused, or repurposed.

The truth is that due to their higher waste-per-capita generation, San Franciscans send roughly the same quantities of trash to the dump as most other Americans.

What Can be Done to Reduce Your Individual Waste Footprint?

The statistics provided above should make it clear that individuals, homeowners, and business owners in San Francisco can do more to reduce their waste footprints. Besides dutifully separating your recyclables and organics every week when the Recology trucks come to pick up your weekly trash, making an effort to recycle, donate, or repurpose your bulky trash items should also be a high priority.

Junk King of San Francisco offers efficient and affordable junk removal services for residents, homeowners, and business owners of San Francisco. While you could haul your old couch out to the curb and place a “free” sign in hopes that somebody might come and pick it up, chances are that you would be rewarded with a hefty fine before anyone actually removed the thing. San Francisco´s municipal trash service only offers one (and sometime two) free bulk item pickups to individuals every year, and charges businesses a small fee.

If you don’t have a free pickup but are burdened with an enormous amount of junk you need to get rid of, Junk King of San Francisco can help you avoid the headache of self-hauling your old junk to the nearest collection facility. With a simple phone call or text, we can set up a time and date to come and help you get free up space in your home by getting rid of your used furniture items.

Dumpster Rental Service in San Francisco

Let´s take a look at some of the rather outlandish statistics related to the amount of trash that we accumulate here in United States:

  • We collectively throw away 2.5 million plastic water bottles every HOUR. That amounts to well over 22 billion plastic bottles of water every year.
  • Despite the drastic drop in “snail mail” service, the average American continues to receive at least 560 pieces of junk mail per year, or about 1.5 trees that are cut down to make the paper for the junk mail you probably don’t even read.
  • Every three months, the United States throws away enough aluminum trash to completely rebuild our ENTIRE commercial air fleet.
  • With the rise of cell phones, computers, and other electronic appliances and devices, we are now producing around 9.4 million tons of “e-waste” each and every year. According to one report, “electronic waste affects nearly every system in the human body because the materials that make up e-waste contain a plethora of toxic components, including mercury, lead, cadmium, polybrominated flame retardants, barium, and lithium.” Only 12.5 percent of electronic waste is currently recycled.
  • A typical household throws away between 10 and 15 percent of the food that it purchases. In total, Americans throw away 21.5 million tons of food waste each year. When landfilled, this organic waste combines with inorganic waste to release an enormous amount of methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gasses.
  • Over 12 million tons of furniture and furnishings are also sent to the landfill each year, many of them in decent shape.

Junk King Dumpster filled with Debris

These statistics should send us a wakeup call to the fact that the amount of waste that we generate on a daily basis is simply unsustainable. Often, we only think about the “tail end” of the waste streams we generate: the landfill. According to one recent analysis, “seven states are looking at running out of landfill space in the next five years, one state will reach capacity in five to 10 years and three states have 11 to 20 years to go.” Though a lack of landfill space is a very real problem, the negative environmental effects of our waste streams go far beyond where our waste eventually ends up.

junk removal service recycling

Consider the issue of wasted food.  Much of the food waste we create unfortunately ends up landfilled and contributes to the issue of global warming via methane emissions, as we mentioned above. However, wasted food also contributes to other ecological problems. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) estimates that the amount of food waste we generate each year is equal 19 percent of all U.S. cropland used to produce crops, 18 percent of all the farming fertilizer used every year, 2.6 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, 21 percent of the total agricultural water usage, and around $218 billion in economic losses, or 1.3 percent of the total gross domestic product (GDP).

Obviously, dealing with the huge amount of waste that we accumulate starts with questioning our individual consumer habits. Maybe investing in a water filter could help us reduce the purchase of so many plastic water bottles. Despite this fact, however, accumulating excess amounts of junk almost always seems to occur at certain times. Whether you are helping a distant family member deal with a “hoarding” problem, or you simply need to get rid of some old office furniture that is taking up space in the attic of the small business you own, renting a dumpster from a local junk removal service is often the best option to efficiently get rid of the accumulated junk that is taking up space in your home or business. Might there be a way to ensure that the junk you toss into a dumpster isn’t simply sent to the nearest landfill, thus further contributing to the landfill crisis we mentioned above?

With a simple phone call or text, you can rent a dumpster that our junk removal professionals will deliver and help you install safely and legally on your site. Our customer service representatives can also help you determine the correct size dumpster you need (measured by cubic yards) so that you only spend as much as you needed for your dumpster rental.

Junk King of San Francisco was started back in 2005 out of a garage in San Carlos. Over 15 years later, our business now has eight trucks and serves thousands of customers across the entire city of San Francisco. We have developed close relationships with dozens of recycling centers, thrift stores, non-profit organizations, and other interested parties to make sure that all your used junk is given every opportunity to be donated or recycled, instead of landfilled. In fact, we are able to recycle, donate, or repurpose around 60 percent of the junk that we pick up or collect from the dumpsters that we rent.

For a dumpster rental, you can throw away regular trash, construction debris, household junk, yard waste, small and medium sized appliances, e-waste, furniture, used hot tubs, and virtually anything that is not classified as toxic waste in an environmentally friendly manner. With a dumpster rental, you can take your time to sort through your junk and let us know whenever it is ready to be picked up.

Dumpster Rental Vs. Junk Removal in San Francisco

If you are planning a major home remodel, or are taking spring cleaning to a whole new level with a major de-clutter, you need to start thinking NOW about what you are going to do with the waste that you collect. Even relatively minor home renovations often lead to a significant amount of construction and demolition (C&D debris) being accumulated. In 2018, Americans generated around 600 million tons of C&D debris, which is more than double the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW). If your home renovations will lead you to getting rid of some old furniture or appliances in favor of newer and more efficient models, those large, bulky items will take up even more space in the growing trash pile.

bulk item and trash removal

While most people think that the “last order of business” with any renovation or de-clutter is dealing with the waste collected, planning ahead can help you avoid a series of problems. If you live in relatively cramped quarters, not having a destined spot for putting the junk and waste that you collect can actually delay or hinder the renovation process. Also, if you are planning on simply storing the trash in your driveway or front yard, you´ll probably get some odd looks from the neighbors.

Junk King Dupster on a lawn/sidewalk with a board object leaning up inside

Sidewalk dumping not only can make neighborhoods look unsightly, but is costly to the taxpayers and can present safety hazards by obstructing pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. Depending on what is left on the curb, you might also be attracting vermin, bacteria and mold, not exactly a neighborly thing to do. Even temporarily placing your bulky trash and junk items on the curb can lead to expensive fines. In the city of San Francisco, the Public Works Department states: “It is illegal to leave furniture, appliances, garbage bags, or anything on the sidewalk at any time unless you have a scheduled pick up from a licensed hauler or donation facility.”

free guide - transform your garage

Instead of illegal dumping or trying to store all of the accumulated waste in your garage, what other options to businesses or individuals have when doing a major home retrofit or de-clutter? Renting a dumpster or planning ahead for professional junk removal are two strategies that can help you quickly, easily, and efficiently deal with the excess junk items that result from any major home or business renovation. In this short article, we look at when dumpster rental is the best option for business owners or homeowners, and when it makes more sense to simply call a junk removal service.

When to Rent a Dumpster

A dumpster rental generally makes sense for people when they are going through a long, drawn-out renovation or de-clutter process where junk and waste will slowly accumulate over several days or weeks. For example, let´s say that you have hired a green contracting company to help you make a complete energy efficiency retrofit of your home. Over the course of several weeks, the company will most likely replace certain parts of your home´s insulation, upgrade to more efficient HVAC equipment, and maybe even replace your old, single pane windows with more efficient double or triple pane options.

Click Here To Book A MINI Dumpster Today!

The end result will be lower energy bills for long-term savings. However, the process of improving the energy efficiency and thermal performance of your home will most likely take several weeks, at best. If the home had a spacious driveway or expansive backyard, a dumpster rental would most likely make the most sense as it would offer an option for safely storing the accumulated waste until the energy efficiency renovations were finished.

Dumpster rentals tend to be the most affordable option for dealing with large amounts of trash. If you have a trailer and a heavy duty pickup, you might even be able to haul away the dumpster´s accumulated contents once the job is finished. Even if you plan to hire a junk removal company to get rid of the dumpster contents at the end of the renovations, you can expect to pay less for one large junk removal service rather than several smaller jobs.

While dumpster rentals can be an efficient and affordable way to deal with waste, you need to first ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I have enough space in my yard or driveway to put the dumpster? If a dumpster is going to be blocking you (or your neighbor´s) car from getting in and out, and dumpster rental probably isn’t the best option.
  • Will you be accumulating any sort of hazardous waste? Local disposal ordinances in San Francisco prohibit some types of debris from being thrown away in either dumpster rentals or your regular trash can. Some of these hazardous options include batteries, paint, tires, gasoline, railroad tires, and other materials with potentially toxic substances that could leach into the surrounding area. If you are not sure if your renovation or de-clutter process might contain prohibited items, you can call Junk King San Francisco today to clear up any doubts you might have.  Dumpster rentals are usually best for completely non-toxic waste materials such as normal construction debris, household waste like furniture, yard debris, and roofing debris.
  • Are there any other regulations, ordinances, or laws that might make impede a dumpster rental in your region? You can read a detailed explanation of the ordinance regulating the placement of dumpster rentals and debris boxes in San Francisco here.

When to Hire a Professional Junk Removal Service

Junk Removal services tend to be the best option for quick renovations or de-clutters where lots of waste is accumulated in a short amount of time. With professional junk removal you don’t have to worry about where to store the excess waste, what your neighbors might think or say, or whether or not you are infringing on some local ordinance that might result in a fine. Also, hiring a junk removal service means that you won´t have to do any of the heavy lifting, as you simply have to point to the junk items that you need removed. This “hands-free” junk removal service is obviously best for people who do not have the physical stamina to be taking heavy waste items out to the dumpster you´ve rented and placed at the end of your driveway.

Whereas a dumpster rental will usually take several days to totally get rid of your waste, professional junk removal generally only takes a couple of hours at most. With Junk King of San Francisco, you can simply text us an image of what you need removed and we´ll text back a price estimate. Once you´ve agreed upon the price, we´ll give you the nearest two-hour window for pickup, and will notify you 15-30 minutes before we arrive.

Lastly, junk removal is usually the best option for extremely bulky items such as large furniture and appliances that simply won´t fit in a dumpster.

Junk King of San Francisco is America´s greenest junk removal service. We offer both junk removal and self-service dumpster rentals to help you deal with your waste in the most affordable and efficient way possible. We also offer the best customer service, and are proud to have a 5-star rating on Yelp. Finding Easy Furniture Removal in San Francisco

furniture removal san francisco

Many of those over the age of 40 or so might remember the days when hefting a piece of furniture wasn’t a big deal. In fact, some guys could probably pick up a recliner or dining room table by themselves.

The rest of us were content to hold the doors open!

However, when you’ve gotten older, or the furniture happens to be a sofa or large credenza, lifting it yourself isn’t really feasible. And moving old furniture out of the house and into the back of a truck? Forget it!

But if you live in or near San Francisco – as more than 880,000 people do – getting rid of furniture is something that has to happen every once in a while.

This is why Junk King San Francisco offers furniture removal services.

Please Take My Couch

With apologies to Henny Youngman, this is a true sentiment for many folks. From the Richmond District to Golden Gate Heights, and from the Mission District to Russian Hill, people are getting rid of old, unwanted furniture.

And it’s not always easy.

In fact, if you can’t sell your old furniture pieces – or they’re not in good enough shape to sell – and you’re not able to donate them, you’ve still got to find a way to get rid of them. For most folks this means hauling them away somewhere.

But what does that entail exactly?

Kitchen chairs, dining room tables, recliners, sofas, and bookcases take up a lot of room in a vehicle. And you have to get them out of the house or apartment first. This can be challenging if you have stairs – and who doesn’t in the City?

And once you get your old furniture pieces, or pieces, outside you still have to figure out what to do with them. You can’t just leave them out on the curb, as tempting as that might be. In fact, it’s quite illegal, unlawful, and simply bad form to leave an old couch abandoned somewhere.

Even if you do put a sign on it that reads: “FREE”

So, you need to get your hands on a truck or large cargo van then haul it all to a waste transfer station someplace.

Seriously – there has to be an easier way!

And there is when you call Junk King San Francisco.

Furniture Removal for San Francisco Doesn’t Have to be Hard, Does It?

Unfortunately, there are people who dump their old furniture on the side of a road, in empty lots, and sometimes they simply dump them in front of a thrift store.

Yes, it’s unlawful, but if no one sees it happen then nothing further happens. Yet, no one likes having old, broken-down furniture or mattresses lying abandoned in their neighborhood, either.

Debris, junk, and old furniture can bring down the overall quality and safety of a residential block as well as contribute to a rise in crime, according to numerous studies

Trying to transport old furniture is a challenge, especially if you don’t own a truck or know someone who does and is willing to help you. Once loaded into a suitable vehicle, however, you still have to know where to take your old furniture and be ready to pay whatever the fee is for that waste management facility.

While you might still be able to simply dump your old furniture items at a transfer station or an actual landfill (if you can find one), it’s a far better solution to have your unwanted furniture recycled if it can’t be reused or repurposed.

According to an article at RecycleNow.com,

“Furniture at the end of its useful life can often be recycled, especially items made from wood and metal.”

However, this is a somewhat ambiguous topic since so many wood furniture items are made of material that has been chemically treated in some way or another.

A post from Recycle Nation describes it well,

“End tables, coffee tables, bookshelves, dining room chairs and the like all have one thing in common: They are made of treated wood. That makes them difficult, if not impossible, to recycle. The main uses for recycled wood are compost, garden amendments like mulch or burning it for energy.

The chemicals in varnishes, paints and other wood treatment products make your old furniture a bad candidate for all those applications. More and more furniture items are made with less-expensive particleboard and chipboard, but these products fall in the nonrecyclable category as well.”

However, there are other ways to dispose of these items that do not involve simply tossing them into a landfill.

Our Office Furniture Removal Process is “Green” Furniture Removal

Too many junk removal companies operate with the end goal of taking as much as possible to the nearest landfill. And, while it may seem to be quicker and more efficient, it’s certainly not the way we do things here at Junk King San Francisco.

In fact, our junk disposal process involves taking the junk and trash that we’ve picked up from you, including your unwanted furniture, and transporting it all to our local Junk King warehouse.

Once there, it is all meticulously sorted through. We do this because most of the items can either be reused, repurposed, or at least recycled.

When it comes to furniture, most items are constructed with a variety of materials, and many pieces like stuffed chairs, couches or credenzas need to be dismantled. The good news is that many of the materials are easily recycled such as the plastics and most of the wood.

While there are other products such as certain foam padding materials that require special handling, all of the steel and aluminum parts can be used as scrap metal, and even all the solid wood furniture can be easily recycled.

At Junk King, it has always been our corporate mission to recycle as much of your waste and junk items as possible since the company was founded in 2005. We have always done this, and we continue to work to protect the planet and provide a sustainable alternative to landfills. Our trained and licensed crew even operates a fleet of bio-diesel trucks for many of our jobs.

We’ve been named “America’s greenest junk removal service” in large part because we understand that you want green removal and disposal of your junk. So, we take care of it for you!

WFH – an abbreviation that has become synonymous with COVID-19, coronavirus, working remotely, and stay-at-home orders, especially in cities such as San Francisco. And, whether you live or work in the Mission District, the Sunset District, near Balboa Park, or in Bayview, working from home can mean office furniture removal.

If your home office has recently been renovated – which is a common practice these days as people find themselves spending far more time there – or your commercial space has been closed down indefinitely, you have old things to get rid of.

Looking For Space – More Office Space Actually

Back in 1975 when John Denver was singing about finding himself, this was somewhat of a stirring and uplifting sentiment. Today, not so much.

According to one source

“Data issued by the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that 4.7 million people, which make about 3.4% of the US workforce, were already working remotely before the novel coronavirus took the world by storm.”

And even more will join them permanently even after the latest wave of virtual workers are herded back to their corporate cubicles. Statista reported,

“25% of respondent companies will move 10% of their employees to permanent remote positions post-COVID 19.”

With so many people transitioning to a “work from home” lifestyle, finding sufficient space and privacy in many homes is a challenge. And, with all the changes often comes a change of equipment and furnishings.

This often means that when the new stuff comes in, the old stuff has to go out. And, when the old stuff is office furniture, removing and disposing of it all can be a challenge.

Office chairs, desks, file cabinets, bookcases, and printer stands are hard to fit into a Prius or MINI Cooper. And leaving them out on the curb for someone to take isn’t really practical in the City. So, getting rid of old, unwanted office furniture is now a growing problem in cities like San Francisco.

And not just for the WFH folks who are busy working in their business casual tops and flannel pajama bottoms!

There are plenty of businesses that, although they have managed to stay afloat in the onslaught of economic chaos, stay-at-home orders, government shutdowns, and just the general craziness of the previous year, have still found themselves downsizing.

And, of course, there are those businesses that, tragically, have closed down as a result of all this.

And downsizing or minimizing space often means getting rid of excess equipment and furnishings – similar problems but for different reasons.

Office Furniture Removal for San Francisco

If your company is busy “emptying cubicles by the Bay” and your job is to find the best solution for office furniture removal, you are probably looking for something quick and easy.

Or, if you are newly working from home and have had to get rid of your old furniture in order to make room for your new furniture, it’s also your job to find the best solution for office furniture removal. And you probably also want some method that is quick and easy.

Good news: Junk King San Francisco has the solution you need.

Assuming you have either been unable to or have decided not to even try to, sell or donate your old office furniture, removing them yourself can be rough. For businesses with employees, it may be tempting to rent a truck and press them into service as furniture movers and junk haulers.

But it’s not cost-effective nor efficient. And probably not even safe.

With health protocols, social distancing, huffing and puffing through a mask while grappling with heavy furniture, this isn’t an ideal DIY project for anyone. In fact, taking care of your own office furniture removal is probably much more than most people can or want to do.

However, you can easily hire a professional firm to do all the heavy lifting for you and haul it all away so you can avoid this task.

In fact, outsourcing for professional and reliable office furniture removal is actually a smart business decision.

And calling Junk King San Francisco to pick up your old office furniture makes great sense because there’s simply no easy way to get rid of it yourself especially in San Francisco! Best of all, Junk King will provide you with an efficient, safe, and eco-friendly furniture removal service so you don’t need to worry about the pickup or disposal of your old office items.

Not only that, but we also make sure that your old furniture items end up in the right place: whether it be a charity if the pieces of furniture are still in good shape for a donation or a recycling facility to ensure your furniture is disposed of in an eco-friendly way.

The Dumpster Rental Experience

So, what should you expect when you rent a dumpster in San Francisco?

We can’t speak for other companies but when you rent from Junk King San Francisco you can expect an easy and positive customer experience from start to finish. We’ve outlined some of the key steps and touchpoints of the dumpster rental process below, as well as what you can expect at each stage.

Our Dumpster Booking

If you are ready to rent a dumpster right now you can click here and scroll down until you see the contact form on the right-hand side of the page. While you can certainly call us instead, by booking online you’ll save $30!

When you fill out the online form, you will provide us with your name, address, zip code, phone number, and email address. You can also input the date you need the rental, and the online form will give you some time slots from which to choose. In some cases, you might be asked to call Junk King to discuss the details of your order.

Our Dumpster Size

Aside from cost, the primary consideration for a rental dumpster is determining how large a debris bin you need. Are you really going to need a dumpster with a 20 cubic yard capacity, or can you get by with one that holds just 10 or 12 cubic yards of junk?

At Junk King San Francisco, we realize that most customers really don’t know how much space they need. Consequently, choosing a dumpster size is usually based on little more than an educated guess. This can be stressful since renting a dumpster that’s too small can be a problem, while ending up with one that is far too large means paying more when you didn’t need to.

At Junk King, we understand this. So, to eliminate the stress and streamline the dumpster rental process, Junk King just has one dumpster size: The Junk King MINI Dumpster.

The MINI is a 12-cubic yard debris bin that is the perfect size. It will fit in almost all driveways and, more often than not, it is the perfect size for most self-service junk removal tasks. The Junk King MINI is fully capable of handling smaller junk items as well as larger ones, such as old furniture and broken-down appliances.

Our Dumpster Pricing

Because there are different dumpster sizes available and a variety of cost factors to consider, most dumpster rental companies end up with complex – and confusing – pricing structures.

Not so with Junk King.

By limiting our self-service dumpster rental to our Junk King MINI Dumpster, we have a simple pricing structure that is both transparent and easy to understand.

First: There are no hidden charges or fees with your dumpster rental. Too many other companies “nickel and dime” their customers with unfair extraneous charges. At Junk King, we don’t want to be one of them.

Second: We offer pricing based on how long you need your dumpster rental. If you know you are going to knock out a house cleaning project in just one weekend, for example, a three-day rental can be perfect

For bigger projects, you can rent your dumpster for five or seven days. No matter how long you choose to keep it, you will know exactly when your dumpster is scheduled to be picked up and how much the rental will cost.

Third: You only pay for the dumpster space you use with Junk King. With most companies, you pay one full price when you rent their dumpster whether you fill it halfway or all the way.

At Junk King, we have different pricing tiers based on how much space you actually use. The minimum tier is for dumpsters that are less than half full, then there is a half-full tier, and a full dumpster tier.

If you end up filling your dumpster and still have more junk to get rid of, just let us know. Junk King will pick up your dumpster and drop off another one for you. And it doesn’t matter if you fill two, three, or even ten MINI Dumpsters, you will still only pay for the space you use!

The Dumpster Drop-Off and Pick-Up Process

If you choose to rent a dumpster, then it’s probably a time-sensitive project, which means it’s also crucial that you get it on time. Otherwise, you’ll have nowhere to toss your trash, building debris, or other junk when the time comes to clean, move, or renovate.

At Junk King, you schedule your drop-off and pick-up times beforehand and our crews are guaranteed to be on time for both appointments. And we’ll even call you 15 minutes before your scheduled drop-off time to ensure that you’re there to accept the delivery.

With our process, there is no confusion about where the dumpster is or when it is coming.

And you don’t have to worry about having a dumpster loaded with junk sitting in your driveway for days, attracting flies or other pests. We’ll be there on time to pick up your dumpster and haul your junk away.

Green Junk Removal in San Francisco

Usually, the words “trash” or “junk” and “sustainability” don’t go together in the same sentence.

That’s because most junk removal services will pick up a dumpster and take it immediately to the nearest landfill. That’s not the case with Junk King San Francisco. Instead, we take your junk and trash to our local Junk King warehouse and meticulously sort through everything. This is done because many of the items can either be reused, repurposed, or recycled.

By pulling these items out before they end up in the landfill, we work hard to protect the planet and provide our customers with a more sustainable solution. We know that you might not necessarily have the time to be sorting through all your junk items if you’re preparing for a move, or in the midst of a major cleaning of a cluttered house.

So, we take care of it for you, which is why we’ve been named “America’s greenest junk removal service.”
