Junk Removal for Local Non-Profit: Rooms of Hope

Recently Rooms of Hope, a non profit organization found us through HomeAdvisor.

About Rooms of Hope (from their website):

Our mission is to provide dream room makeovers to children with life-threatening illnesses. Our purpose is to surround these children with love and co-create the space of their dreams, may it be their bedroom, playroom or other refuge away from all the medical tests and treatments they must endure at the hospital. We are about bringing hope and joy to seriously ill children as they literally fight for their lives. These spaces are very personal and are built to represent the child’s unique personality, filled with everything that is meaningful to our Rooms of Hope children.

Rooms of HopeNaturally, as a father myself, I felt compassion and wanted to help. We were off to help an 8 year old boy who was born without a diaphragm in his heart. In fact, a year or two ago he had a major heart attack and was legally dead for about 20 minutes. Because of the nature of his condition, his situation is terminal and he is restricted as far as activities. He will therefore likely spend a lot of time in his bedroom. A big Spiderman fan, the makeover obviously had to have this theme!

The project was emotional for me as well as rewarding to be working with such an incredible family and the Rooms of Hope crew and volunteers.

After the event, I asked Shelly Ham, the Director of Rooms of Hope some questions:

Matt Verga: Why did you start this organization?

Shelly Ham: I started this organization just recently but a team of almost a hundred people have been doing this mission for almost 4 years. The reason that I do this is because two of my three children had serious illnesses. I started Rooms of Hope in order for a room of a child’s dream to be created to help them during their time at home. It’s their Haven and there to help them heal and get escape as a child should. All they want is to be healthy children and all they want is to be normal kids. These rooms provide that just that.

Matt Verga: How many families/kids do you help per year?

Shelly Ham: I’m a fan of helping children. Room of Hope helps approximately 20 families each year… Meaning 20 children with life-threatening medical conditions. In addition to creating a dream room makeover for a child who is seriously ill, we also do many makeovers for siblings because they need some TLC too.

Matt Verga: What are some of the challenges you face on each project?

Shelly Ham: The challenges we face on each makeover is making sure that we are fully funded to purchase the things we need, that we also receive the amount of in-kind donations of the products we need, and that we have the right people on site to help us with these makeovers. We have been very blessed to have all of these things come together in the past and would like to strengthen the relationships with our donors, supporters and people out at the project. We’ve never turned a child away due to lack of funding for resources. We are very proud of that. One of their biggest needs was garbage disposal. The amount of time and logistics was a very difficult task and that’s why we are very appreciative of Junk King donating their services. Besides junk removal we would like to have more licensed contractors and electricians on board. We also need more interior designers to help design and build beautiful rooms for the children.

It is such an honor and privilege to be serving these children. Often times people will think that we are the ones helping them, but in reality every time we are around these very strong families and children it reminds us what a gift it is to each of us.

Another great benefit, is that we were able to recycle 75% of the items removed to make this boys dream room come true!
