The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and California Prison Health Care Services recently broke ground on a $906 million, 1,722-bed inmate medical facility in Stockton. This will be a 1.2 million-sq-ft facility that will include a central kitchen area, diagnostic and treatment center, warehouse and support areas. As for security, there will be a 13-ft-high lethal electrified fence surrounding the prison along with and 11 strategically placed 45-ft-tall guard towers. In other words, this is going to be one secure place. The construction is supposed to take three years to complete. As construction projects go that’s a pretty decent amount of time but it will mean a lot of local workers will have steady employment. It’s also going to mean a lot of construction waste.
