Keeping Lodi’s coast clean is a big job. That’s why an event like the California Coastal Cleanup Day is so important to stay on top of garbage removal. Each year, over 40,000 volunteers gather at cleanup sites up and down the California coast. The last time this event was held, over 350 Lodi area volunteers managed to collect upwards of 350 pounds of trash from the Mokelumne River and Lodi Lake area.
Here’s how this works: “The Lodi Lake and park area is divided into sections, or “reaches,” with a 10-12 person team designated to clean each reach. Once the reach is cleaned of trash, the team then sorts and records all debris found. Data is then submitted to The Ocean Conservancy’s international database and kept by the City of Lodi as well. This data is used to identify the sources of marine pollution and helps in their work towards devising solutions to the marine debris problem. The data also measures the public’s “garbage footprint.” Each year, there is a statewide contest for the “most unusual item found.” Lodi has been a statewide winner twice in 9 years with students finding an unscratched CA lottery ticket and a crawdad in a Gucci purse.”
Bottom line: These folks have the coastal cleanup wired. It’s a shame that it takes this many volunteers to cleanup what is really an area shared by all of us. It will be great when the day comes when volunteers are turned away because there isn’t anything to clean up.
