Cold weather can bring out the hoarder in all of us. More jackets! Thicker socks! Ski bibs! Everyone wants to stay warm. This can lead to a gathering of winter stuff. Before you pack away those snow boots for the eighth year in a row, ask yourself if it’s worth it.

Especially living in central Texas, we don’t experience an abundance of uncomfortably cold weather. We may pick up warm items for a ski trip, a cold-weather hunting expedition or to visit relatives up north. However, we don’t always need to keep all of these items forever.

Home Organization For The Holidays

Efficient coordination and home organization are of the most stressful aspects of the holidays for many homes. However, home organization for the holidays does not have to be a thorn in your side. Junk-King Austin has some tips to help keep you sane:

  • Have a plan – make a list of what needs to be done, when people are coming into town and what parties you will be attending. Writing it out will help you feel less stressed, will enable you to keep track of it all and will aid you in delegating tasks you cannot finish on your own. 
  • One thing at a time – do not start 18 projects at once. Begin one task and work it to completion. This applies to cleaning as well. Focus on one room at a time, cleaning it to your satisfaction before moving on to the next room.
  • Relax – the most important part of the holidays is the relationships we invest in. Friends and family will likely not remember how clean your house was or if you were a couple of minutes late to dinner. What they will remember is how everyone was treated, the pleasant or unpleasant atmosphere and whether or not everyone was happy.

Tips For Turkey Cooking

Cooking a turkey is a Thanksgiving Day tradition most Americans share. While the task can seem daunting, Junk-King Austin has some tips for turkey cooking.

  • Turkeys take a long time to thaw. Move the turkey from the freezer to the refrigerator at least 4 days in advance for a 20-pound turkey. 
  • To estimate cooking times (cooked at 350 degrees F in the oven), allow 20 minutes/pound for a thawed turkey and 10-15 minutes/pound for a fresh turkey.
  • About 45 minutes before pronouncing it cooked, remove the foil cover from the bird and place it back in the oven. This allows the turkey to brown.
  • When you remove the turkey from the oven for the final time, check its temperature. Use an instant-read thermometer for best results. The turkey should measure 165 degrees F in the thigh. If the bird is stuffed, check the inside of the bird which should read at least the same temperature.

  • Add reflective tape to trick-or-treat bags and costumes to add visibility.
  • Giving children flashlight or glow sticks will help drivers identify the potential danger.
  • Teach your child to make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
