Cooking a turkey is a Thanksgiving Day tradition most Americans share. While the task can seem daunting, Junk-King Austin has some tips for turkey cooking.
- Turkeys take a long time to thaw. Move the turkey from the freezer to the refrigerator at least 4 days in advance for a 20-pound turkey.
- To estimate cooking times (cooked at 350 degrees F in the oven), allow 20 minutes/pound for a thawed turkey and 10-15 minutes/pound for a fresh turkey.
- About 45 minutes before pronouncing it cooked, remove the foil cover from the bird and place it back in the oven. This allows the turkey to brown.
- When you remove the turkey from the oven for the final time, check its temperature. Use an instant-read thermometer for best results. The turkey should measure 165 degrees F in the thigh. If the bird is stuffed, check the inside of the bird which should read at least the same temperature.
