Junk Hauling in Baton Rouge: An Important Strategy to Protect our Unique Ecosystem

Junk Hauling

One of the unique aspects of living in Louisiana, and especially around the Baton Rouge area, is the fact that much of our landscape is dominated by wetland ecosystems. According to the United States Geological Survey,

“Louisiana’s wetlands today represent about 40 percent of the wetlands of the continental United States…The State’s wetlands extend as much as 130 kilometers inland and along the coast for about 300 kilometers.”

Unfortunately, the wetlands throughout Louisiana are facing an unprecedented crisis due to multiple factors. Improper trash disposal, littering, pollution, illegal dumps, and other similar threats are causing serious issues affecting these important ecosystems. Below, we take a quick look at the current state of wetlands in Louisiana, and explain why the junk hauling services offered by Junk King of Baton Rouge are one of the best ways to protect this fragile part of the natural world.

The State of Louisiana´s Wetland Ecosystems

Wetlands play an extremely important, though often underappreciated, ecological role. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that “wetlands provide values that no other ecosystem can. These include natural water quality improvement, flood protection, shoreline erosion control, opportunities for recreation and aesthetic appreciation and natural products for our use at no cost.” Wetlands are also an important habitat for thousands of different land and aquatic species, including several species that are at a high risk of extinction.

Despite this importance, the wetland ecosystems throughout Louisiana represent about 80 percent of the losses of wetlands throughout the United States. Wetland ecosystems in the region are under constant threat due to water drainage, pollution, unsustainable use, invasive species, disrupted flows from dams, and sediment dumping from deforestation and soil erosion upstream. Another serious threat to the health of wetlands is the issue of illegal dumps, littering, and other forms of improper trash disposal.

In one of Baton Rouge´s most important wetlands near the Louisiana State University Burden Center, at least 81 tons of trash is devastating the natural area. One recent news report finds that “plastic bottles, beer cans, and basketballs that have floated into the area from Wards Creek fill the swampy area, thick enough to walk on without touching the dirt beneath” In fact, in some parts of the litter swamp, trash is up to 18 inches deep, and further core samples are being conducted to see just how far down the litter goes.

Though much of this waste is the “legacy” of previous generations who have not responsibly dealt with their waste, current waste management challenges and deficiencies continue to threaten our wetlands with even further pollution. Last year, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, labor shortages drastically affected the regular garbage removal service offered by the city. In the month of June 2021 alone, over 1,000 people called 311 to report missed trash pickups.

Many people had to wait as long as three weeks between pickups, and there were even reports of garbage trucks dumping trash on the street and trash cans being only partially emptied. These delays in regular garbage service, along with the constant threat of illegal dumping practices, almost certainly lead to even more trash ending up in the wetland ecosystems surrounding the city of Baton Rouge.
