While we all hope our appliances will last for years, the unfortunate truth is that eventually, we will have to replace refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, and other items. When it’s time to replace one of your appliances, you have to deal with disposing of the old one. Appliance disposal can be very easy if you know who to call. If you don’t, you may end up storing the old appliance in your garage for years. Let’s look at different appliances and how you can most easily dispose of them.

Refrigerators

Refrigerators are one of the hardest appliances to dispose of because they’re so large and bulky. Searching for “refrigerator disposal near me” will return some results, of course, but you may be shocked at how much it can cost to get rid of a single refrigerator. That’s because in addition to simply dealing with refrigerator removal, you also have to remove the hazardous refrigerant from them before they can be disposed of. Many landfills will not take refrigerators that contain antifreeze and other chemicals.

If you take your old refrigerator out to your garage or out to the curb, you need to take safety precautions. You will need to remove the door so no one can get trapped within it. You should also remove or roll up and secure the power cable. If you can’t remove the doors, securely tape them shut.

Freezers

Much like refrigerator removal, disposing of freezers is difficult because of the chemicals they contain. The refrigerant must be drained out of the freezers before they can be dumped in a landfill. Also, like refrigerators, you must make certain these old appliances are safe until they’re disposed of. This means removing the door or securely taping it shut. Large chest freezers can be even more difficult to take out of your home, so you have to be very careful you don’t hurt yourself. Never try to move one of these appliances by yourself.

Large freezers typically have ice build up in them, so wherever you put the freezer, remember that the ice will melt now that it has no power. Most of these freezers do have a drain port, so once the ice has melted, you can open that little port and let the water drain out. You may not want to do that in your garage, so you may want to move the freezer a second time to drain it, then put it back in the garage until you can have it removed.

Washers and Dryers

Washing machines and dryers are also fairly large and heavy appliances you may need to replace at some point. If you purchase new ones and have them delivered, you may be able to pay to have the old ones removed. However, if you don’t have that option, you’ll need to do something with the old appliances.

Washers and dryers don’t have any chemicals in them, so you don’t have to worry about refrigerants. However, you do want to make certain that your washing machine water lines have been completely drained. You’ll need to turn off the water to the washer and remove the hoses from the back of the appliance.

For the dryer, you’ll want to remove the vent hose. This is typically a large, flexible hose that attaches to both the wall and the dryer with a circular clamp. Remove it from both, and then use something like an old rag to plug the vent hole in your wall. This exhaust vents to the outside, and if you don’t plug it up, it could create a draft. It’s also possible, though unlikely that rodents or even birds could get into it from the outside and move through it into your house. Tape the doors shut before you take these appliances to the garage or other location to store them until you can hire an appliance disposal service.

Kitchen Stoves and Ovens

Kitchen stoves and ovens may not need to be replaced as often as washing machines, dryers, or refrigerators, but they can still wear out. Your stove and oven may be one single unit, which is easier to deal with. If your stove is electric, simply unplug it and pull it away from the wall, then move it to wherever you want. If it’s gas, you’ll want to be certain you understand how to turn off the gas before you move the unit.

Built-in cooktops and ovens can be more difficult to remove. When your oven isn’t a part of your stove, you may need to unscrew it from the cabinet or other enclosure, figure out where the power or gas line is located, and take other steps. In this case, it may be easier to hire someone to remove the oven and install the new one. It depends on how confident you are in doing such a task. Either way, the old oven isn’t as difficult to store as a full stove/oven appliance since it’s smaller.

Air Conditioners and Furnaces

Replacing and disposing of window AC units is fairly easy, while dealing with full HVAC air conditioners and furnaces isn’t. However, when your home has a 30-year-old air conditioner, it may be time to replace it. Newer models are more energy-efficient and keep your home more comfortable without using as much power.

Normally, you don’t have to worry too much about appliance disposal when it comes to HVAC units and equipment because those repairs, replacements, and updates have to be done by licensed professionals. They normally dispose of any old parts they have to remove, so you won’t need to search online for “air conditioner disposal near me.” If you do have to get rid of old HVAC parts, though, Junk King of Cincinnati can take them.

If you have an old window unit that no longer works, you’ll need to have it removed. Fortunately, storing these small appliances is much easier than finding somewhere to keep a large chest freezer or washing machine. Just make sure you place it somewhere out of the way. Small window units, unlike large appliances, could actually present a tripping hazard if you put them in the wrong place.

New call-to-action

Microwaves and other Small Appliance Disposal

Small appliance disposal is much easier than dealing with large items. These appliances such as microwaves, toaster ovens, and other items can be easily stored and may even be acceptable for bulky trash pickup. However, if you’re getting rid of larger appliances or other large amounts of junk, you can simply throw your small appliances in with them.

The most important thing with small appliances is to make sure they’re safe to dispose of. You’ll want to remove any plates, trays, and other items from inside them. As with other appliances, be sure to tape the doors shut and wrap up any cords. These small appliances, like window unit air conditioners, can be tripping hazards, so be sure to store them somewhere out of the way until they can be disposed of.

Instead of Disposal, Consider Appliance Recycling

While disposing of old appliances gets them out of your home, it does send them to the landfill. This isn’t environmentally friendly, especially since many of these large appliances can’t be compacted. However, there is another option: appliance recycling. Most appliances can be at least partially recycled. Even if all parts cannot be, much of the metal, glass, and plastic can.

Junk King handles appliance removal, but we also work with local recycling centers to recycle what parts of them we can. We sort out anything that is recyclable, which includes appliances. We will have the refrigerant and other chemicals drained from them, then disassemble them into their recyclable components. All of this is done at no additional cost to you. We’re dedicated to reducing the amount of junk that goes into a landfill, and our recycling initiative is the primary way we do that.
