While we all hope our appliances will last for years, the unfortunate truth is that eventually, we will have to replace refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, and other items. When it’s time to replace one of your appliances, you have to deal with disposing of the old one. Appliance disposal can be very easy if you know who to call. If you don’t, you may end up storing the old appliance in your garage for years. Let’s look at different appliances and how you can most easily dispose of them.

Refrigerators

Refrigerators are one of the hardest appliances to dispose of because they’re so large and bulky. Searching for “refrigerator disposal near me” will return some results, of course, but you may be shocked at how much it can cost to get rid of a single refrigerator. That’s because in addition to simply dealing with refrigerator removal, you also have to remove the hazardous refrigerant from them before they can be disposed of. Many landfills will not take refrigerators that contain antifreeze and other chemicals.

If you take your old refrigerator out to your garage or out to the curb, you need to take safety precautions. You will need to remove the door so no one can get trapped within it. You should also remove or roll up and secure the power cable. If you can’t remove the doors, securely tape them shut.

Freezers

Much like refrigerator removal, disposing of freezers is difficult because of the chemicals they contain. The refrigerant must be drained out of the freezers before they can be dumped in a landfill. Also, like refrigerators, you must make certain these old appliances are safe until they’re disposed of. This means removing the door or securely taping it shut. Large chest freezers can be even more difficult to take out of your home, so you have to be very careful you don’t hurt yourself. Never try to move one of these appliances by yourself.

Large freezers typically have ice build up in them, so wherever you put the freezer, remember that the ice will melt now that it has no power. Most of these freezers do have a drain port, so once the ice has melted, you can open that little port and let the water drain out. You may not want to do that in your garage, so you may want to move the freezer a second time to drain it, then put it back in the garage until you can have it removed.

Washers and Dryers

Washing machines and dryers are also fairly large and heavy appliances you may need to replace at some point. If you purchase new ones and have them delivered, you may be able to pay to have the old ones removed. However, if you don’t have that option, you’ll need to do something with the old appliances.

Washers and dryers don’t have any chemicals in them, so you don’t have to worry about refrigerants. However, you do want to make certain that your washing machine water lines have been completely drained. You’ll need to turn off the water to the washer and remove the hoses from the back of the appliance.

For the dryer, you’ll want to remove the vent hose. This is typically a large, flexible hose that attaches to both the wall and the dryer with a circular clamp. Remove it from both, and then use something like an old rag to plug the vent hole in your wall. This exhaust vents to the outside, and if you don’t plug it up, it could create a draft. It’s also possible, though unlikely that rodents or even birds could get into it from the outside and move through it into your house. Tape the doors shut before you take these appliances to the garage or other location to store them until you can hire an appliance disposal service.

Kitchen Stoves and Ovens

Kitchen stoves and ovens may not need to be replaced as often as washing machines, dryers, or refrigerators, but they can still wear out. Your stove and oven may be one single unit, which is easier to deal with. If your stove is electric, simply unplug it and pull it away from the wall, then move it to wherever you want. If it’s gas, you’ll want to be certain you understand how to turn off the gas before you move the unit.

Built-in cooktops and ovens can be more difficult to remove. When your oven isn’t a part of your stove, you may need to unscrew it from the cabinet or other enclosure, figure out where the power or gas line is located, and take other steps. In this case, it may be easier to hire someone to remove the oven and install the new one. It depends on how confident you are in doing such a task. Either way, the old oven isn’t as difficult to store as a full stove/oven appliance since it’s smaller.

Air Conditioners and Furnaces

Replacing and disposing of window AC units is fairly easy, while dealing with full HVAC air conditioners and furnaces isn’t. However, when your home has a 30-year-old air conditioner, it may be time to replace it. Newer models are more energy-efficient and keep your home more comfortable without using as much power.

Normally, you don’t have to worry too much about appliance disposal when it comes to HVAC units and equipment because those repairs, replacements, and updates have to be done by licensed professionals. They normally dispose of any old parts they have to remove, so you won’t need to search online for “air conditioner disposal near me.” If you do have to get rid of old HVAC parts, though, Junk King of Cincinnati can take them.

If you have an old window unit that no longer works, you’ll need to have it removed. Fortunately, storing these small appliances is much easier than finding somewhere to keep a large chest freezer or washing machine. Just make sure you place it somewhere out of the way. Small window units, unlike large appliances, could actually present a tripping hazard if you put them in the wrong place.

New call-to-action

Microwaves and other Small Appliance Disposal

Small appliance disposal is much easier than dealing with large items. These appliances such as microwaves, toaster ovens, and other items can be easily stored and may even be acceptable for bulky trash pickup. However, if you’re getting rid of larger appliances or other large amounts of junk, you can simply throw your small appliances in with them.

The most important thing with small appliances is to make sure they’re safe to dispose of. You’ll want to remove any plates, trays, and other items from inside them. As with other appliances, be sure to tape the doors shut and wrap up any cords. These small appliances, like window unit air conditioners, can be tripping hazards, so be sure to store them somewhere out of the way until they can be disposed of.

Instead of Disposal, Consider Appliance Recycling

While disposing of old appliances gets them out of your home, it does send them to the landfill. This isn’t environmentally friendly, especially since many of these large appliances can’t be compacted. However, there is another option: appliance recycling. Most appliances can be at least partially recycled. Even if all parts cannot be, much of the metal, glass, and plastic can.

Junk King handles appliance removal, but we also work with local recycling centers to recycle what parts of them we can. We sort out anything that is recyclable, which includes appliances. We will have the refrigerant and other chemicals drained from them, then disassemble them into their recyclable components. All of this is done at no additional cost to you. We’re dedicated to reducing the amount of junk that goes into a landfill, and our recycling initiative is the primary way we do that.

Junk King is a professional junk hauling company that can haul off more than just appliances. We also take old furniture, televisions, yard waste, old electronics, construction debris, and other trash. Our quotes are fully transparent, and we will explain every single fee before asking you to sign off on anything. Junk King Cincinnati Dumpster Rental Services Contribute to a Cleaner Environment

New Mini Dumpsters Help Make Way for a Cleaner and Greener Tomorrow

Mini Dumpster RentalKnown as the birthplace of professional baseball, Cincinnati, Ohio was settled in 1788 and is often remembered as a boomtown of the 19th Century. Being one of the first major inland cities in the country, Cincinnati’s major sources of early commerce were its ability to import via steamboats, the inception of Proctor and Gamble’s Ivory Soap and its position as the largest manufacturer of carriages in world.

According to cincyusa.com, Cincinnati’s rich history lends to a long list of “firsts” in which the once booming metropolis led the country:

While industry has changed and the winds of business have shifted, the city of Cincinnati has not slowed down. Beginning in 2003, the landscape of Cincinnati began a boom of its own as Great American Ballpark, home to the Reds, and Paul Brown Stadium, home to the Bengals, surfaced. In addition to the new stadiums, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the renovated Duke Energy Convention Center and the new Fountain Square all materialized shortly thereafter. This 1.4 billion infrastructure spending brought about great change to the city landscape and increased the appeal of both businesses and travelers.

Green Living in Cincinnati

The City of Cincinnati takes great pride in its strides towards green living. The non-profit organization Partners for Livable Communities has listed Cincinnati as one of America’s More Livable Communities. Listed among the top 10 largest cities across the nation, Ohio was recognized for not only bringing growth to its region but for also working to improve the quality of life for its citizens.

Cincyusa.com lists Cincinnati’s green success as:

  • Cincinnati has become the first Green Power Community in Ohio and is also ranked sixth in the nation in the amount of green power bought by a community.

  • Cincinnati uses 408 million kilowatt-hours of green power per year, this is enough to offset the carbon dioxide emissions of 60,000 cars a year.

Residents of Cincinnati enjoy over 5,000 acres of city parkland. CNN ranked Cincinnati as having the seventh best parks in America. The city has also begun to participate in bike sharing, as many large cities do, and uses it and other services to encourage Cincinnatians to be car free. Fifty red bike stations are scattered throughout town to encourage residents and visitors to cut down on the amount of vehicular travel.

Education

The City of Cincinnati has been a pioneer in green living and is continuing its efforts to make green living a lifestyle rather than a political effort. The University of Cincinnati was named to the Princeton Review’s list of GREEN universities  making it the only public university in Ohio to make the list.

Cincyusa.com boasts a long list of ways the city is going green but efforts in education are striving to leave a lasting impact. Along with Ohio leading the nation, Cincinnati is leading Ohio for the most LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) -registered schools. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is one of the most popular green building certification programs used worldwide.

  • With six LEED Green buildings, the University of Cincinnati has become a leader in sustainability.

  • Cincinnati State offers a Renewable Energy major, as well as a Sustainable Design and Construction Certificate.

  • Cincinnati Public Schools has started integrating sustainability into their K-12 curriculum.

Recycling in Cincinnati

Cincinnati stays committed to its desire to be a Zero Waste city through its recycling program. City-wide curbside recycling was first introduced to resident and businesses in Cincinnati in 1989 and has steadily increased in participation.

 Did you know?

·      In 2015, the annual citywide recycling participation rate for Cincinnati was 70%

·      In 2015, 16,399 annual tons were recycled

·      21% of waste was diverted from landfills in 2015

According to the EPA and Cincinnati-oh.gov, “only 15% of clothing is donated or recycled when a curbside program is not offered, which means 85% of the items end up in the landfill. In Cincinnati, 10.5% of what Cincinnati residents put in the landfill is textiles which equal 6,564 tons each year. Curbside recycling of clothing and housewares is an option that will reduce the municipal waste stream, save money and positively impact the environment.”

The growing number of textile waste is cumbersome and discouraging knowing that much of it can be put to use elsewhere. If you know you will be doing a large spring cleaning or replacing your carpets, Junk King is not only equipped to haul off your excess through its dumpster rentals, but also makes every effort to reuse, recycle or donate those items, thus helping push Cincinnati even closer to a zero-waste rating. As the concern for the environment increases, dumpster rentals are a great resource for everything from small scale clean outs to large scale demolition debris clean up. Roll off dumpsters serve to make disposals not only easier but also more responsible when using a company like Junk King that is committed to recycling and repurposing.

Cincinnati has a unique partnership with Simple Recycling allowing residents to participate in the curbside recycling of housewares and clothing. While residents are strongly encouraged to donate any unwanted items, this unique opportunity makes it easy to ensure those items don’t end up unnecessarily in landfills.

Landfill and Global Solutions

According the Green Cincinnati Plan, the city’s goal is to reduce landfill waste to zero as it seeks to view a good portion of so-called waste as valuable resources through recycling. The city is constantly measuring is recycling program to make it easier as residents are more inclined to participate in programs that require less work.

Rumpke, the landfill local to Cincinnati, has been a source of complaints for Cincinnatians as the amount of waste continues to grow. Rather than seek new areas for landfills, government leadership in Cincinnati looks to waste reduction as the solution.  The Green Cincinnati Plan also cites the commercial sector as responsible for approximately two-thirds of the waste in local landfills and has partnered with other entities to help reduce that waste.

Junk King Cincinnati is a perfect fit for sustainability be it through commercial or residential cleanouts. There is ample opportunity to recycle in Cincinnati but as mentioned, simplicity makes all the difference! All items tossed into a Junk King roll away dumpster is taken to a recycling warehouse where employees take the time to sort each and every dumpster rental collection for metals, e-waste, paper, household goods, textiles, furniture and appliances before simply tossing more trash into the landfills. But “going green” also means Junk King is able to donate, repurpose, and reuse everything from clothing, toys, baby cribs and strollers to office furniture and supplies. Many of the Junk King trucks run on biodiesel, a domestically produced fuel made from more environmentally safe non-petroleum, renewable resources. Junk King is committed to continuing to lead the way to help keep the planet clean, green and beautiful for the generations to come. Just as Cincinnati is striving for, Junk King is also committed to a greener future for the city.

Cincinnati Air Conditioner Disposal

Do you know where your Freon is? You’re refrigerator is a good source and if you have an air condition unit chances are that will be loaded with Freon as well. For those keeping score, Freon is a cooling agent that is also classified as hazardous chemical. As long as it is kept inside the machine that it’s supposed to be in everything will be alright. It’s when it leaks is there a problem. That’s why you have to dispose of ACs and fridges in a responsible manner. Here in Butler County, locals have an opportunity to do just that… at least for a while.

The Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District has extended its Freon collection program for another couple of weeks. This started in April and it’s simple to use. You have to call into to the department, make your way through the switchboard and set up an appointment for a curbside pickup. That means you have to get that AC or fridge down to the curb. Additionally, there have been drop-off centers set up throughout the greater Cincinnati area but once again you’ll be in charge of getting that bulky item to that drop off center. Clearly that’s going to require a truck, van or really big SUV plus some extra hands. Maybe this program isn’t so simple after all.

A much smarter alternative would be to hire Junk King Cincinnati. They are the junk removal specialists based right here in Cincinnati who work on your schedule. You won’t have to wait in line to make an appointment for a Junk King crew. You also won’t need to bring anything down to the street. The Junk King team will do all the work whether that means removing an AC from an upstairs bedroom window or getting that fridge down a flight of stairs. They also have a big enough truck to accommodate whatever amount of junk you want tossed out. Your primary reason for calling Junk King Cincinnati could be getting rid of that AC unit but that doesn’t mean you have to stop there.

This could be the perfect chance for you to finally get rid of all of those other bulky items that have been taking up valuable space in your basement, attic, closet or garage. Are you ready to trash that old sofa, sporting equipment, lawn mower or abandoned car parts? Let Junk King handle the job.

With Junk King you’ll only be charged a price based on the amount of space you’ll take up in their truck. No labor costs, no travel time and no hidden fees. Best of all, Junk King Cincinnati will make sure your bulky material is properly disposed off. That’s really the only way to go!

Cincinnati Appliance Disposal

A rise in stolen scrap metal has caused the Public Safety Committee of the Cincinnati City Council to get together and discuss a possible ordinance that might put restrictions on the sale of scrap metal within the city. Scrap metal thieves have been targeting pretty much anything they can get their hands on made out of metal. This includes pipes, hubcaps and a whole range of appliances from air conditioners to stoves. Typically, a homeowner or apartment resident might need to replace those big appliance items and ends up dragging the old appliance out to the curb or backyard. This becomes a prime target for scrap metal thieves. What the Cincinnati City Council is looking to do is to cut off their source of revenue by putting restrictions on those who want to sell scrap metal in the city.

The ordinance that is being discussed would require anyone who wants to sell scrap metal in Cincinnati to submit for a background check and pay for a license. Unfortunately, this news isn’t going over big with the scrap metal dealers who fear that adding these extra burdens on their potential sellers will force them out of business.

Cincinnati Appliance Disposal Made Easy with Junk King Cincinnati

While this issue is being debated upon, Cincinnati residents in need of getting rid of their major appliances have very few options for proper disposal. How You Wind Up with Old Appliances You Need to Dispose Of

If you’re shopping for new kitchen appliances you might find that many of the companies you’re buying from will offer free installation services. However, they will probably still charge for delivery. For many companies, there is no mention of removing the old item. This is something that you’ll have to take care of on your own but you shouldn’t be discouraged by this extra task. Junk King Cincinnati means you’re getting experienced haulers who are licensed and insured. That’s definitely a much better approach to this type of work then hiring strangers off the street to come into your home.

What’s great about hiring professional junk haulers is that they can take away more than just your worn-out refrigerator or stove. You’ll be able to take advantage of their big truck by loading it up with all sorts of junk you might have been hanging onto for no good reason. The arrival of a new refrigerator could actually turn into the perfect excuse to clean out the clutter from the rest of your home. You’ll be able to take back all your closet and attic space by removing all that garbage once and for all.

Cincinnati Junk Hauling – Get Those Big Trash Items Out of the House

We truly live in a great country with an amazing standard of living for a majority of our citizens. That’s a fact that is not in dispute. Unfortunately, that high standard of living does not extend around the world. According to reports generated by the United Nations there are over five million people who die every year because of a disease they picked up from garbage and waste. Imagine that: getting sick from your own garbage. The issue is that in those 3rd world countries, they don’t have a proper municipal waste disposal program. Here in America the average citizen can create around ¾ of a ton of garbage every year. Think what it would look like if that garbage wasn’t picked up on a weekly basis.
You might think that having that weekly garbage pickup is all you need to worry about but there could be a lot more junk in your home that could cause you a hassle. That’s why you might want to think about getting all that unused stuff together and hiring a professional crew of junk haulers like Junk King Cincinnati to show up at take it away.
The first step you have to make is to classify your junk as junk. For some folks this is extremely difficult but it’s time to get real. If you don’t use something in your home then why are you keeping it? Furniture shoved in a basement or garage that isn’t being used could become a home to vermin that would like nothing more than to use the stuffing for a nest. Also depending on where this furniture is situated, it could also become a fire hazard. Yes, out of sight, out of mind but that’s not always the best philosophy to follow especially in your own home.
Then there is the issue of yard waste. Unless you are specifically growing a compost pile, yard debris is another invitation to unwanted critters. Some folks have piled up the waste from a remodeling project by the side of the garage or in the backyard. This can be a problem if there are curious kids anywhere around. You want to make sure all that is cleaned up.
What about old kitchen appliances that you have replaced but not gotten rid of? These can also provide a tempting play zone for kids that can lead to some harmful incidents. None of this is meant to scare you into action but just to point out that there is probably a lot of waste in your home that is just too big to toss out. Even if you have one large piece of unused furniture it’s worth the call to Junk King Cincinnati to show up and take that away.
The most common factor as to why folks hang onto that junk has less to do with sentimental reasons and more to do with practical ones. They just don’t have the means or the time to dispose of that junk properly. Now you do when you call an experienced Cincinnati junk hauling team like Junk King.
