Just because we live in a country that allows protests doesn’t mean there aren’t rules for protesting. For instance, a group of local Colorado Springs protesters want to have their own voices added to the Occupy Wall Street protests that have been popping up all over the nation. In order to do that, the protestors have asked for and been granted permission to set up a mini tent city in a downtown park. Technically, anyone can apply for a permit to protest in Acacia Park. If granted that permit will allow you to erect tents, put up tables and chairs and even bring in a portable toilet. How much will this permit cost? For only a $100 you can launch you very own protest.At any moment, city officials can revoke the permit and kick the protestors out. This being the government that would mean the protestors would get 14 day notice. So, if they make a mess of the park, they could be cited and then kicked out after 14 days. Knowing that keeping things clean seems to be a big issue for these protests, the organizers have probably made arrangements to have a few rental dumpsters on hand to act as garbage collectors. Given the amount of people expected to come by the protest, a rental dumpster makes a lot of sense. You might want to apply that same kind of logic to your own home cleanup project but there are some drawbacks to renting a dumpster for your home.
First of all, you have to find a place for the dumpster. If you have a big enough driveway then that huge trash bin and be off loaded there but then you’ll be parking on the street until the clean-up is done. No driveway? The dumpster could be placed on your front or back yard but there is no telling what kind of damage that can cause to your grass. If the rental dumpster is parked outside your home on the street, you might have to get a special permit for that especially if street cleaning occurs on the day you might have the dumpster there.
If you can work out all those location issues, then you still have to contend with the concept of having a potential target for dumpster divers. You might think your garbage is safe but unless you put a lock on the dumpster, anyone could go through it at anytime. Don’t believe this? Take a drive downtown in the middle of the night and see who is going through dumpsters outside of businesses or bars. The thinking is that with such a large bin, there’s got to be something good inside.
