Columbus Carpet Disposal and Recycling

old carpet removalBuying a new carpet might come down to a question of how fast you respond to spills. You can buy a high grade carpet that will last a lot longer but you’ve got to stay on top of keeping it clean. That means frequent vacuuming and immediately treating any stain

For a person who is trying to maintain their carpet’s appearance, here are some considerations when buying new carpets.

First, Do you have pets or small children and are you able to keep up on the housework. For example, do you or your housekeeper vacuum regularly. Also, do you respond to accidents on your carpets promptly? If the answer is yes to both questions, you should consider buying higher grades of carpets (more fiber content per square foot). With proper care, the higher grades of carpets should last longer and provide a better return on your investment. If the answers above were no, a higher grade carpet will probably not last very long and you might want to look at lesser grades of carpets.

Sculpted carpets (carpets with high low patterns) are quite attractive but should be used in rooms that are not high use rooms. These types of carpets will show wear patterns quicker due to the high low nature of the fibers. The high spots do not have the support of neighboring fibers and will get worn down to the level of the low fibers resulting in a visible wear pattern.

Berber carpets are also quite attractive but once again should be considered for rooms that are not high useage. A Berber carpet, by the nature of its weave, is hard to clean when dirt gets into its fibers. Also, they can unravel if the loops get damaged (cats or dogs scratching can create damaged loops) and the less expensive Bebers tend to show wear patterns quicker.

So when you finally decide on the type of carpet you want to install, how do you handle getting rid of and hauling off that old carpet?  After ripping it off the floor that carpet can take up a ton of space in your basement or attic and end up collecting dust or becoming a home for insects and animals.  It’s best to haul it out of your home as soon as possible. However, it’s difficult to simply place that carpet in the back of your car;  your car might not be able to safely fit it and it also could potentially damage your vehicle.

Your best option is with Junk King Columbus, a company that can efficiently  haul off your carpet or any other old junk items you have lying around your home.  Not only that, but they’ll do so in an eco-friendly manner, always recycling whatever items they can in order to keep your neighborhood green.

Furniture Donations Pickup in Columbus

It’s the end of the school year at Ohio State University and that means it’s time for Dump & Run. This is the tenth year when students who are heading home for the summer drop off all the stuff they don’t want to take with them. All these items are sorted and put into storage. Then the new students who show up in the fall have a chance to furnish their dorm rooms at a deep discount. The money the students raise for the re-sale will go to a local area food bank. That’s a classic win/win for everybody.

The university organization Students for Recycling promotes and runs it at Ohio State. “We estimate we probably divert 2 to 4 tons of material from landfills, whether it’s furniture, clothing or other stuff,” said Tricia Evans, president of the group. “It’s kind of cool.”

The common items that end up in the Dump & Run bins are futons, end tables, area rugs and lamps, irons, slow cookers and old-fashioned box TVs. Most of the high-end flat screens are taken back home. Students can also donate any unopened leftover food stuff.

“Six university-owned Greek houses received Dump & Run bins this year for the first time. Students for Recycling also are scheduled to sweep through the off-campus neighborhoods in a rented truck on July 20 to pick up donated couches and other larger furnishings, Swanger said. “Ohio State is known as a green campus. Recycling is easy here.”

That’s good news for the campus and for the rest of Ohio. Anytime you can keep something from being dumped into a landfill we all benefit. It’s that eco-friendly philosophy that has been embraced by Junk King Columbus. These are the junk removal specialists who happily haul away anything you want to get out of your home. If you’re eager to toss out big pieces of furniture like sofas, love seats or tables, Junk King will always try to reuse and recycle items when possible. They’ll also try and make sure pieces end up with local charities that refurbish and the re-sell the items just like those college kids. Don’t be embarrassed if your sofa is stained or there is a leg missing from a dresser. The charities can clean and fix whatever is donated. This is also a wonderful way to provide jobs and skills training for those in need.

You also don’t have to worry about carrying your furniture out to the curb like with many other types of companies. The Junk King Columbus crew will go into any room, down any basement stair or up any attic ladder to remove those items. You’ll be clearing your house of clutter and hopefully helping someone else along the way. It’s another win/win all around!

Columbus Bulk Item Pickup

Sometimes things around the house can get a little bulky. We’re not talking about our waistlines after Thanksgiving dinner but about the stuff we collect over the years that can’t be thrown out in the weekly trash pickup. Have you ever tried to toss out a sofa? It’s not easy. Here in Columbus the Department of Sanitation can help with a bulky pickup but that’s not going to be easy either.

The first step for scheduling a bulk-collection pickup with the city will require you to call their City Service Center. This will take you through a maze of telephone prompts that may or may not land you with an actual human. You could try scheduling an appointment through the city’s website but there is no guarantee anyone is going to be answering that email anytime soon especially with all the budget cuts.

There are also very specific rules when it comes to leaving stuff by your curb. Here are just a few: “If your regular trash is picked up at the curb, place bulk items in front of your home away from obstructions on your specially scheduled collection day. If your regular trash is picked up in an alley, place bulk items on the edge of your property at the alley line on your specially scheduled collection day. Roll carpet into a bundle 4 feet long by 2 feet in diameter and tie it with rope. Leave furniture assembled. Glass must be removed from bulk items, placed in a box, taped and marked glass. Residents are responsible for cleaning up any glass residue that may remain on the ground in front of their home as a result of collection. Smaller bulk items must be placed in boxes. Plastic or metal trash cans placed out with a bulk collection will be collected for disposal.” All of this makes it feel like you’ll be packing up your junk like you were moving.

Then there is the issue of getting it out to the curb in the first place. In many cases, that simply isn’t feasible. The city will pick up things like furniture or mattresses. However, if you are hoping to toss out stuff like auto parts, tires, construction waste, refrigerators, hot tubs, pool tables, pianos, spars, water coolers or air conditioners you can forget it! The city won’t be picking those things up. So, who can you turn to for a complete junk removal? That would be Junk King of Columbus.

When you hire Junk King Columbus you’ll be hiring a professional crew to do the work. You won’t have to roll up a carpet and tie it down. The Junk King crew will handle that. They’ll also take the items you’re getting rid of from your home, basement or attic and load them up in the truck. Best of all, Junk King will be working on your schedule.   It’s a no hassle solution to get rid of those bulk items.  Get rid of junk the right way with Junk King.

Columbus Computer Recycling and Disposal

There are certain trash items that have no business being thrown out in the trash. That might sound like an odd statement but the truth is that electronic waste or e-waste is considered hazardous when it’s not properly disposed of. To handle this type of trash those items need to be disassembled and the basic components sorted for disposal. If left unintended in a local Columbus landfill, the chemical compounds which are part of the e-waste can eventually seep into the surrounding environment and that’s not going to be good for anyone in our neighborhoods.

On the long list of “what is e-waste” are such items as computers, servers, monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers, printers, fax machines, copiers, scanners, stereo equipment, cell phones, camcorders, DVD/CD/Blu Ray players and any type of phone equipment. So ask yourself what kind of e-waste you have tucked away in a closet or under your bed? You’re probably holding onto that stuff because there was no way of getting rid of it. Now there is a way, and that would be with hiring Junk King Columbus.

Junk King takes care of all kinds of junk removal projects around the Columbus Ohio area, and that make it their mission to insure whatever they collect is disposed of in a manner that is good for our local community. When it comes to e-waste there are several certified centers around the Columbus area which accept this type of junk. You don’t have to bother with finding out which center is closest to you or will accept what you’re throwing out. Junk King handles all of that as part of their complete junk removal service.

On the same trip that Junk King is getting rid of your e-waste they can also take away any oversize item you’ve been itching to toss out. Things like old sofas, stoves or washing machines can also be destined for recycling centers. In fact, the majority of what Junk King collects will never make it to a landfill. Instead it will be repurposed and reused.

A Junk King crew can also handle the removal of any type of yard waste such as debris left over from the last storm or patio furniture that was ruined from the lasts snow? Nothing will be out of bounds for Junk King. When it comes to pricing, all you’ll be paying is based on the amount of space your junk takes up on the back of their truck.

There are no hidden charges with a Junk King Columbus junk removal job. Whether you’re getting rid of one old computer or an entire room of furniture Junk King is the call you should make (1-800-995-5865).

Fall yard and garden clean up checklist Columbus Ohio

Hurricane Sandy Brings Torrential Rain and Snow to Ohio…in October?!?

Map of NOAA long-term forecast for the U.S. for fall and winter 2012

Click Map for Full Size Image

It suddenly feels like winter in Columbus, and a harsh one at that. Snow before Halloween? I can’t remember the last time that happened—if ever!

The NOAA forecast for a wet winter for Ohio and the Great Lakes region is looking like a safe bet right about now.

Freak storms aside, I prepared a fall yard and garden clean up checklist but it suddenly seems like I should be out shopping for rock salt and snow tires. This list is adapted from one I found on the Iowa Gardener.

And while I am thinking about it, we offer storm debris clean up, too. Whether a it’s flooding from a late year, slow-moving hurricane,  hail or lightning damage from a summer thunderstorm or an ice storm’s deep freeze, we will help you clean up and dispose of everything in a safe, environmentally sound way. And we don’t even charge for labor!

Without further ado, here is the ‘official’ Junk King Columbus autumn checklist for Central Ohio:

❏ Pull up all annuals (plants that you have to buy every year).
❏ Cut back perennials (plants that return every year).
❏ Start a compost pile for organic matter, including small amounts of leaves and branches.
❏ Call Junk King Columbus for assistance gathering and hauling away anything you won’t be composting 😉
❏ After the first frost, dig up and store indoors all tender bulbs.
❏ Empty all pots and store in the garage so they don’t crack in the cold.
❏ Have Junk King rake the leaves from your lawn but it is OK to leave them if they are few and in flower and garden beds—Free Mulch!
❏ Mow the lawn one final time before winter arrives. We suggest you use a mulching mower but we can dispose of grass clippings too.
❏ Run the mower until the gas tank is empty. Check the owner’s manual to see if any filters need to be changed and what, if anything,
to do with the oil.
❏ Sharpen the blade, this is something that should be done every fall.

As a reminder, we do not charge for labor so if you don’t feel like raking leaves or picking up the yard you can call us and we will do it for you at the same price as if we were just picking it up and hauling it away to be composted.

How to choose a hauling and junk removal service

The past few years have seen a tremendous increase in the number of junk removal and hauling services in the Columbus area. As such, some of the businesses offering hauling and trash related services lack professional expertise and experience, this can cause headaches for the home and business owners who unknowingly choose them (usually in hopes of avoiding the headaches and stress of disposing of junk themselves). Thankfully, there are several factors that can help identify a good junk hauling team.

Things to look for in a hauling service:

Flexibility: Not all junk removal services deal with all kinds of junk. Some of the common categories include appliances; construction materials; concrete pavers; furniture; electronic items; lawn and garden refuse; along with all sorts of miscellaneous trash. Make sure that any service you hire covers all the categories of items you want to be hauled away. A good, all-round junk removal service will cover almost anything non-hazardous and recycle as much as possible. Flexibility also includes the ability and willingness to work at a time of your choice.

Customer Service: Check user reviews and ratings to ensure that the company you choose believes in good customer service. This includes prompt answering of the phone during the specified business hours; politely explaining the various terms and conditions as well as the pricing details; giving a clear ETA for the removing team and ensuring that the latter arrives at the promised time; no hidden costs; and a good customer service department for handling problems and complaints.

Pricing: One of the easiest ways to ensure a cost-effective pricing for junk removal is to search for the companies that charge according to the volume of junk to be hauled away rather than the time it takes to load it. Many junk removal firms actually charge by the amount of time that it takes to load and remove the debris. This can artificially inflate the price, especially when dealing with slow workers or multiple items. The better option is to choose companies that charge according to the amount of space taken up by the junk. This means that you get a steady, reasonable rate regardless of how much time it takes to actually move the items.

Insurance: Last but not the least, always make sure that any company you hire has adequate insurance coverage and is licensed or bonded as appropriate. With the necessary insurance, you know you are protected, no matter what.

Junk hauling services differ greatly in pricing, competence, and efficiency. Take your time researching and we are confident you will choose Junk King every time.

Columbus Tree Disposal and History of the Christmas Tree

Every Christmas there is one item that many families all across the world bring into their homes and that would be the Christmas tree. But do you know the history of the Christmas tree? The first time that a decorated tree was put up during the holiday season can be traced back to the 15th century in the German region of Europe. Back then it was the Estonians who started the tradition of setting up what they called a paradise tree in the town square for the purpose of having people gather around and share in holiday celebrations. This evolved into bringing the trees into the home and decorating them sweets, nuts, pretzels and apples for children to enjoy. Remember this was all going down in the 1600s.
Over the years the tradition of the Christmas tree evolved and became a main prop in a popular holiday medieval play that was presented throughout Germany in December. This play had less to do about what went down in Bethlehem and more to do with what happened in the Garden of Eden. As a tribute to Adam and Eve, a fir tree was brought into the home and decorated with apples to represent their time in Paradise. Tradition held that a Christmas tree shouldn’t be decorated until Christmas Eve which is considered to be the day of Adam and Eve.
For a while, the Christmas tree only existed in Germany. It wasn’t until 1781 that the Christmas tree concept was brought over to North America by some soldiers stationed in Québec. While waiting for a potential American attack, the general and his wife entertained guests with their version of a Christmas tree that was decorated with candles and fruit. A few years after this the Christmas tree began popping up in England but only with the Royal family. As little Queen Victoria requested a Christmas tree your room every December the idea began to spread throughout the land.
In America, many German immigrants lay claim to being the first ones to bring the Christmas tree to the United States. Although there are many such stories it all does go back to the Germans so we have that to thank them for. Today, most American families will put up the Christmas tree right after Thanksgiving and keep it up New Year’s. Before the invention of electric lights candles were very popular for decorating Christmas trees and you can only imagine how much trouble that caused.
On a more practical and present level – once your Christmas tree is ready to be taken down it’s going to be close to completely dried out. Usually this will mean dragging the tree out the curb and hoping the garbage collectors will pick it up but that’s really not part of their job description. The best course of action for getting rid of your Christmas tree is to hire professional junk haulers like Junk King Columbus. Not only can they take away the tree but they can probably help you get rid of a lot of the debris left over from Christmas celebrations. The best way to start the New Year is without all that junk!

Haul Junk Out of Your Columbus Home and Create a Home Office

Before moving into your new Columbus home you probably had visions of what you would do with each room. Obviously the bedrooms, living room and dining room are only a matter of arranging furniture. But what about those spare rooms you might be lucky enough to have? No matter what your original thought was for how to occupy those rooms often they become the depository of all the junk a family can collect over the years. This is the room where a spare sofa ends up or where the old futon goes to live or it becomes a de facto kid’s playroom. Now that the kids are grown up perhaps it’s time to turn that room into something more productive like a home office.
A home office is actually a space that can become a tax deduction. However, there are some stipulations. For instance the home office needs to be used exclusively for your off-site business. If your kids use it to play video games or do their homework then it might be an issue when it comes to taking a deduction. This is a matter that’s best discussed with your tax accountant. Even beyond a potential tax deduction there are still many other benefits of creating a home office space.
Having a dedicated home office allows you to have a space where you can focus on your work. This is a vitally important especially if you’re living in a busy household. It might be hard to take your laptop to the kitchen table and get work done while everyone else is buzzing about. Your home office can also be established as a privacy zone. You can set out the rules that when the door is closed no one should come in. This will allow you to get that work done without any interruptions. There’s also a psychological component to having a home office. It allows you to separate work from family time.
A home office also helps you stay organized with regard to all your bills and important paperwork. This could be where you manage all the household expenses. This organization can also serve as an inspiration to the rest your family who might be a bit “challenged” when it comes to keeping things together!
Before you can convert that spare room into a home office you’ll need to clear out all the junk. You can get help by calling upon the services of professional Columbus Hauling team like Junk King. to come by and take out all the stuff you crammed into that spare room over the years. During the same trip those junk haulers can also take away any other big bulky items you been hanging onto in your home. With your new home office clear of debris and junk you’ll be able to focus more clearly on the tasks at hand. Who knows? Your new home office might even inspire you to start your own second business. Wouldn’t it be great if you’re commute to work was just a few steps down the hallway?
