Columbus Cleaning Help for Asthma and Allergy Sufferers

Lots of Columbus residents suffer from allergies and asthma. In Ohio and the rest of the U.S. rates of people affected have been rising for the last few decades. If this sounds like you, be aware of the exacerbating effects caused by dust mites.

Dust mites are everywhere and are one of the most common triggers of asthma. In addition, they can cause skin irritation and inflame allergic responses.

Dust mites live in all of our homes, consuming the calls our body sheds (especially skin cells). The feces of the dust mite can be an allergen, causing breathing and skin problems. There can be tens of thousands of dust mites on a visible particle of ‘dust,’ and they produce every hour or so. That’s a lot of dust mite poop!

Here are a few things you can do—or we can do for you—to help you win the battle against allergies, asthma and other breathing-related problems like COPD:

1. Get rid of the junk and debris. Extra clutter attracts dust, traps moisture, and is a veritable playground for dust mites. Junk King Columbus will gladly help you remove and dispose of unwanted junk.

2. Deeply clean furniture and other fabrics such as drapes.

3. Vacuum rugs and carpets regularly.

4. Keep the air dry with air-conditioning or a dehumidifier. Dust mites like humidity.

5. Use a HEPA filter to 3 microns. If your house doesn’t have an air filter, then your lungs are the air filter.

6. Other methods of cleaning the air such as ionizers and ozone generators work great but should be used places where the air is treated well before it reaches the air you are breathing. These technologies work by binding to matter in the air but breathing ozone (it is neutralized once bound to the other particles) can actually make things worse.

These recommendations may also help pollen allergy relief. It may not be much of an issue now but ‘April showers bring May flowers,’ and with them comes hay fever in the Buckeye state. Stay healthy and feel free to call us for help with this and all your spring cleaning in the Columbus area.

Getting the house in order for the holidays

Clutter happens.

It starts small: a cardboard box or a pile of newspapers that you plan to recycle; an obsolete computer or an old television set.

guest room that's overflowing with clothes and junk
Then the holidays roll around with all the presents and their packaging. I don’t know about you, but Ohio winters always sap my energy when it comes to housework. If you fall behind and the piles begin to form, it’s easy to feel like you’re up against an insurmountable task.

Whatever the problem, when it comes to clutter, Junk King Columbus is convenient, affordable and eco-friendly, and we serve all of Franklin County and then some. Whether stacks of out-of-date magazines, antiquated VHS tapes or damaged DVDs, we will help you cut through the clutter and get your life back without spending days sorting through the mess.

  • Need to clean out the closet, basement, attic or garage so you can hide gifts for family and friends? We can help.
  • Don’t want to leave the packaging from presents in your trash for anyone who drives by to see? We’ve got you covered.

The holidays are a time of family and friends. It might be nice to clean out the guest bedroom so someone can sleep in there. Even knowing that, it can be hard to find the time to get around to cleaning out all those little storage spaces that fill up so quickly it seems like odds and ends must be breeding.  Junk King is a  local business, located in Dublin—that can get it all sorted and carted off at one time.

Later, after the season of giving, when all the wrapping paper and ribbons have settled, you can call us up for help with that too. Giant cardboard boxes, Styrofoam packaging, the Christmas tree, the decorations from the New Year’s bash, even the old TV (if you were very good this year!) are all things we’ll gladly collect and haul away while you just relax and enjoy being treated like a king.

Columbus Ohio Dumpster Rental or Junk Removal?

Dumpster Rental vs. Junk Removal: the pros and cons

Is it ever better to rent a dumpster than to use a junk removal service like Junk King Columbus?

We don’t think so and here’s why: Many of our customers are weekend warriors and do-it-yourselfers (professional contractors generally have contracts with us and therefore aren’t looking for our trash removal services very often), frequently neighbors with home improvement projects or local businesses (we are just finishing a huge job for Nationwide in the old Buggy Works building in the Arena District, check back because we are going to blog about it soon). In almost every situation our prices are lower than dumpster rental Dumpster full of corrugated cardboard that could be recycled.and because we offer labor—including light demolition—at no additional charge, most Columbus-area residents are thrilled when they find us.

If you have a very big or extended construction project which will create an extraordinary amount of waste and debris (and by that we mean dozens of cubic yards or more—think enough to fill a tractor trailer) and you don’t mind doing it yourself or paying someone to do it, then traditional dumpster rental might be a viable option for you…assuming you also don’t mind having an unsightly dumpster blocking your driveway. But in reality those situations are few and far between. Often times we get calls where people have improved or repaired their houses and have a pile of trash and rubbish left over—it could be lumber scraps from a deck, it could be flooring materials or shingles—even if the items are neatly piled next to the curb most trash services will not pick them up; Junk King will.

Our corporate website features a load estimating tool that will give you an idea of how much junk and debris will fit in a given amount of space in our trucks (we charge by volume) and a ballpark price. For your convenience, it is set up in everyday terms like “a one car garage full.” As a matter of fact, it doesn’t even need to be piled next to the curb, we will come to you break it down, pack it up, load it up, haul it away, and dispose of it for you at no additional charge. We happily handle trash, furniture, appliances, yard waste, construction materials, and more. Call us and save yourself the aggravation and strain, not to mention time and money, of hassling with an unsightly dumpster. Further, we recycle over 65% of everything we take in so you can rest easy knowing that you are doing your best to reduce your footprint on the Earth. A few questions you can ask yourself when trying to evaluate which option is right for you:

  • How much refuse will need to be disposed of?
  • How heavy will all the debris be?
  • How important to you is it that as much as possible be recycled?
  • How long or how often will you need items to be thrown away?
  • Where will you put a dumpster?
  • Are you willing and able to load it yourself?
  • What kinds of waste will be generated and is it all suitable for putting into a dumpster?

We don’t charge for labor, mileage, weight, time, or dumping fees. Everything is included in our free on-site estimate and if the job ends up costing less than our estimate you pay the lower price, but never more. While our pricing is comparable to the cost of renting a dumpster, the service and value we provide far exceed it. No one is thrilled with the idea of more stuff ending up in our landfills but that’s exactly what happens when you rent a dumpster, but when you call us we not only load, remove, and dispose of all types of rubbish, we also sort it. We recycle everything that can be recycled, we compost everything that can be composted, and we do our best to reduce the environmental impact of waste management.

If you do a little shopping around, you’ll find that dumpsters offered for rent typically range in size from 4 yd.³ to 40 yd.³ At Junk King we have the largest trucks in the junk removal and hauling business, as well as some of the cleanest and most efficient. Our trucks measure 10 feet wide by 15 feet long and will hold 20 yd.³. Some exceptionally dense materials like sand, rocks, concrete, bricks, and soil can only be loaded to a depth of 1 foot but for most types of waste it can be loaded to the top of the truck bed, in either case our larger trucks will save you money on any job where you might be considering renting a dumpster (or hiring a competitor). We serve Central Ohio and most of the Columbus Metropolitan area, which includes all of Franklin County, and parts of Licking, Newark, Union, and Delaware Counties. Our office and warehouse are located in Dublin and we frequently serve Dublin, Hilliard, Powell, New Albany, Worthington, Westerville, Polaris, Delaware, Clintonville, Grove City, Galloway, Plain City, Upper Arlington, and the OSU area.

Our pricing and service offer the best value in town! Wouldn’t you rather hire us to handle the demanding physical labor and avoid the heat, humidity and sun altogether? Further, you don’t have to worry about any of the details and we’ll treat you like a king…not to mention you get to retain the use of your driveway. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to call us at 1-800-995-JUNK (5865) and speak with one of our trained customer service specialists, or call the Junk King Columbus office at 614-792-JUNK (614-792-5865).

Clear Some Clutter Before Your Columbus Halloween Party

Are you getting into the Halloween spirit this year by throwing a party? You might think that all you need is a great costume, some candy corn and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”  playing on a loop but you can do a whole lot better than that.
For instance, why not set up a graffiti board by the door with some colorful markers for guests to sign in with? If you think your guests are really going to get into the spirit of the holiday with their own costumes then you should be ready with prizes for the best couple, best group, spookiest or funniest costume.
For the munchies, finger food is really the only way to go. You can set up a “grazing station”  in your dining room where guests can stop by to fill up snack plates. The goal is to have food which you can put out early and let it stay out without a lot of fuss. You don’t want to be spending your party time in the kitchen and missing out on all the action.
You can also invite guests to bring their own carved pumpkins to add to your decorations. Speaking of which, if there are areas in your home you want blocked off, just string the doors with crime scene tape. Speaking of crime scene, you could turn those unused rooms into a kind of CSI tableau with some “dummy bodies.” Yes, the goal is to creep everyone out!
While the temptation might be to have candles burning throughout the home, it might be a safe choice to confine those to a fireplace or mantle. There is no telling what kind of hanging pieces of a costume that could cause trouble near an open flame.
If kids are going to be part of the party, you might want to set up their own kid zone where they can hang out and watch approved scary movies. They should also have their own snacks set up. And the occasional chaperone visit is a good idea.
As you get ready for your party, you will probably want to clean out the clutter of your home. While you might think that keeping some junk around will add to the creepy atmosphere you are trying to create, it actually can get in the way. Getting ready for your Halloween party is the perfect excuse to hire a team of professional junk haulers like Junk King Columbus to come by and cart away all the stuff you have been holding onto for way too long. Even if you are not going to use your basement or garage as part of the party, there is no reason why it should not be cleaned up. You might also ask the same crew of professional junk haulers to come by after the party to take away all the trash. The goal is for you to enjoy your party without any stress. Save that for the other holidays!

Alternatives to Columbus Ohio Dumpster Rentals

Many businesses and restaurants around the Columbus area rent dumpsters for their trash removal needs. This is a very efficient method for these companies to handle the overflow of garbage they create every day. However, once trash is put into a dumpster it essentially is up for grabs. This is how the phenomenon of “dumpster diving” got started. What was once relegated to an activity conducted by the homeless has spread to a kind of grassroots movements where folks are taking to dumpster diving like they would hunt for buried treasure. There are even some tips for dumpster diving and dumpster diving etiquette.
For instance, would be divers are encouraged to “scout out their dumpsters.” They are advised to look out for surveillance cameras or hazardous wastes. There is also the occasional security guard to contend with. Divers are advised to concentrate on large supermarkets. That’s because they have to throw out food that is passed its expiration date but that doesn’t always mean that food is spoiled. Even day old bread is still very edible. A dumpster diver is also told to come around again and again to that dumpster because there is no telling when something “new” will be added. A dumpster diver should also move swiftly. In other words, get in and get out before anybody knows you were there. Finally, novice divers are told to leave a dumpster alone if there are homeless folks around the area. That’s being respectful.
Now imagine if you rent a dumpster for your own home trash. Here’s what you might attract:
- Dumpster divers scouting out the area
- Dumpster divers moving swiftly through your garbage
- Dumpster divers returning to see what else you’ve thrown away
Is that something you want happening around your home or business? There is a better way: Hire a professional crew of junk haulers like Junk King Columbus to take away your trash. A professional business can’t avoid having a dumpster and therefore can’t avoid attracting dumpster divers but you certainly can.
When you get right down to it, there is not a lot of difference between filling up a dumpster and filling up a truck operated by professional junk haulers. The end result will be the same: All your trash and junk will be gone. The question then becomes “When?” With a dumpster, you might have to hold onto that bin for a couple of days because of a rental agreement. With Junk King, you can get rid of your trash the same day you create it. The longer that dumpster is on your property the greater a target for the divers it will become.
What you want to focus on is getting rid of your junk and not worrying about who might be sniffing around your rented dumpster in the middle of the night. Junk King Columbus’ team will be licensed and insured. Those are the folks you want around your home for sure!

Large Trash Pickup In Columbus, Ohio

How do you plan on spending your summer vacation? Road trip? Water park? Camping out in the backyard? For a group of half-dozen volunteers their summer will be spent cleaning up roadside trash. The group is called “Pick Up America” and they started a cross country trek back in March 2010 and plan to end in San Francisco sometime next year. This summer, the group will be making their way through central Ohio bringing awareness to the issue of littering along our highways and byways.
During the winter, the crew spends their time fund raising, but as soon as the weather turns warm they load up with their garbage bags and take off.
“What we say our mission is, is to inspire a transition to zero waste,” Greg Katski, a native of Silver Springs, Maryland recently told the Greene County Daily World. “We are showing everyone how much trash we produce. We leave the trash bags there along the road for Department of Sanitation to pick up.” In the last 735 miles of their journey, the team managed to pick up close to 75,000 pounds of trash.
Think about that for a moment: 75,000 pounds of trash was tossed out of cars along the side of the road. Among the list of common articles are fast food wrappers, drink cans and cups, appliances, plastic bottles and tires. There is also the hazardous list of materials including needles and various illegal drug paraphernalia. There was even a shoe box with a dead chicken inside. It’s hard to imagine anyone going through their day without passing some kind of garbage can. Do they really need to be tossing all this trash out on the road?
In our homes, most of us have our garbage under control. We stuff our weekly pickup cans and make sure they are put on the curb on the right day. No fuss, no muss. However, there are some times when our trash can overwhelm us. This would be with those large trash items. We’re not talking about a big ball of aluminum foil. Instead, this category of garbage would be taken up with all those items you simply couldn’t fit into your garbage can. Maybe it’s a fallen tree limb and you don’t have a saw to chop it up with. Maybe it’s some old car parts like a rusty fender or engine. Maybe it’s a long abandoned lawn mower. There could be a lot of large trash items around your home in Columbus.
We hold onto these items because we can’t throw them away. Well, fortunately for residents of Columbus, Ohio that has changed. You can now call up a professional large trash pickup team – Junk King Columbus –  and make an appointment to take away your big trash. By hiring this crew you won’t have to worry about breaking up these items or where to dump them. All you need to do is point to the trash you want carted away. What could be simpler than that?
