How to Dispose of Carpets the Eco-Friendly Way

Carpet Disposal

Your old carpet has finally gone from simply worn to ragged and it’s well past time to replace it. So, you have to figure out not only how to pull it up but how to dispose of it once it’s removed.

Sure, you can jump on your phone and search for “carpet disposal near me” and hope you find a quick and easy way to do that. But that’s probably going to only bring up quite a few carpet stores, installers, and not-so-helpful websites.

And besides simply needing to dispose of all the old carpeting from your home, being a responsible Contra Costa resident, you’ll want to dispose of your carpet in an eco-friendly way, as well.

But how do you go about doing that?

Benefits of Carpet Disposal

A popular flooring option today is to choose hardwood, vinyl, or laminate flooring materials as an alternative to new carpeting. For those who prefer not to have to steam clean carpets or are put off by the constant upkeep like vacuuming, a real or faux wood floor has great appeal.

However, if you install your new flooring yourself or even have it done for you, there is still the issue of all the old carpeting that’s been removed.

What do you do with it?

While vinyl or laminate flooring installation can easily be a “do it yourself” project, rolling, strapping, loading, and hauling hundreds of square feet of dirty old carpeting is not. Sure, you may be able to handle that job yourself, but it’s certainly not easy!

Which is why one of the benefits of carpet disposal is not having to do all the hard work like lifting and loading it. In addition, having a professional removal and disposal service take care of it for you means your old carpet will be properly disposed of. Not to mention you won’t have to rent or borrow a truck to do the job yourself.

How to Prepare for Carpet Disposal

Although the actual loading, transporting, and disposal of your old carpet is best left to a professional firm, removing your carpet from your floors can be a fairly easy project. In fact, it can even be done by one person and often completed in a day.

Doing this part of the job yourself will not only save you money, but also allows you to inspect the condition of your home’s subfloor. If you’re handy with basic tools and repair skills, you can also take care of any minor subfloor issues before you have your new carpet or flooring installed.

First, make sure you have the following tools and gear before attempting to remove your carpet:

  • Gloves
  • Knee pads
  • Dust mask
  • Pliers
  • Utility knife
  • Duct tape
  • Sharp-bladed floor scraper
  • Flat pry bar

Here are basic directions for carpet removal adapted from an article at This Old House:

Steps for Removing Carpet

  1. Clear the Space and Put on Your Protective Gear

Remove all the furniture from the room and take down any doors that open into the room. Put on a pair of safety gloves and knee pads as well as a face mask if you’re sensitive to dust particles.

  1. Detach the Carpet from the Tack Strip

Carpet is held in place by tack strips on the subfloor along the walls of the room. Pick a corner, pull up the carpet with a pair of pliers. If the carpet comes up easily continue pulling it up. Otherwise,

use a utility knife to cut out a 6-inch square in the corner then pull up the carpet by hand.

  1. Cut the Carpet into Strips

Pull back about 3 feet of carpet and cut along the back of the carpet so you have a long, 3-foot wide strip. Roll up all the pieces and secure them with duct tape. Metal transitions separate the carpet from other flooring or carpeting. Cut the carpet and leave the transitions. For closets, cut the carpet at the closet door and pull up the piece in the closet separately.

  1. Remove the Carpet Pad

If there’s carpet padding, follow the same steps as for removing the carpet. If the floor is made of concrete, the pad will be glued down. Use a sharp-bladed floor scraper to remove it. If the floor is made of particleboard or plywood, the pad will be held down by staples.

  1. Remove the Tack Strips if Necessary

If the tack strips are in good shape, leave them in place for the installation of the new carpet. If you are installing new flooring, such as wood, tile, or laminate, remove all the tack strips.

Where to Store Your Carpets Before Disposing of Them?

Once you’ve successfully removed all the old carpeting from your home, you’ll need to store them temporarily until it can all be disposed of.

While it’s fairly obvious that you can’t simply stack your ragged rolls of old carpet in another room of the house – that would be far too inconvenient – they have to go somewhere. And if you’re planning to replace all the flooring throughout the entire house, that doesn’t leave anywhere indoors for storing the old carpet pieces.

Typically, the garage is a great place to temporarily stage your old carpeting.

If you have the space, this room allows for keeping the materials out of the weather while keeping them out of the way, as well. In addition, when you’re ready to have the old carpeting loaded up and hauled away, it can be a relatively simple task to remove it all from the garage and directly into a truck.

Carpet Removal Tips and Techniques: Wearing Protective Gear and Staying Safe

Sometimes the most innocuous and seemingly harmless things in a home can be some of the most hazardous. For example, most of us take our carpets for granted. They are just what we walk on and, on occasion, lie on, and they simply sit there.

However, carpets are often harboring dangerous particles, which is why a dust mask is recommended when pulling up carpet.

For example, as one article points out,

“Did you know that the average American household contains up to 7,000 types of dust-related bacteria and 2,000 species of fungi? Your carpet alone can contain up to 200,000 bacteria per square inch.”

In addition to the risk of dust inhalation, carpet removal usually requires a substantial amount of time being on your hands and knees. Not only is the pressure on your knees potentially harmful and even painful, but there is also the risk of kneeling on nail heads, staples, carpet tack strips, and even a few loose screws.

Handling carpeting with your bare hands is never a good idea as the backing is rough and can even scrape or cut the skin. And sturdy work gloves not only protect your hands but provide a much better grip for all the carpet pulling that is required.

And if there is a great deal of tack strip removal or scraping involved, eye protection in the from of safety goggles is always a good idea, as well.

Goodbye, Old Friend! How to Dispose of a Soiled or Used Carpet

Yes, you can probably dispose of your old, dirty carpet yourself. If…

If you have some help and if you have a suitable vehicle such as a full size pickup truck or, better yet, a flat-bed trailer being towed by a pickup truck. And if you know where and how to dispose of waste material like old carpeting.

And, yes, that’s quite a few if’s…

Better to call on a professional debris and junk removal firm like Junk King Contra Costa for all of your old carpeting removal needs.

Not only are we experienced and fully equipped for that type of debris removal, but we are a green and recycling-based junk removal company. That means that we not only know how and where to dispose of old carpets, but we also ensure that your old flooring will be properly disposed of in the most eco-friendly manner possible.

For example, according to Greenwaste.com,

“Used carpet is among the top ten materials in California landfills, with more than 350 million pounds discarded each year. However, petroleum-based carpet can be recycled into useful products, including new carpet, carpet padding, and insulation.”

So, for easy and green old carpet disposal, Junk King Contra Costa is really your best option.

Everything You Need to Know About Shed Removal in Oakland, CA

Shed Removal

Nothing lasts forever, especially wooden structures. No matter how well-built your backyard shed might be, it’ll inevitably start to decay and fall apart. Once that process starts, you’ll know it’s time to tear down the old shed and replace it with something new.

Unfortunately, getting rid of an old shed or other backyard structure can be more of a pain than you might expect. It requires some time and handiness skills to make sure it’s done safely, so it’s important to make sure you know how to do everything properly before you get started. Between rusty nails, rotting wood, and the overall dilapidation of the structure itself, there are plenty of potential safety hazards.

The alternative solution is to bring in some professional help when tearing down the old shed. It might not be the ideal option for your own personal pride, but an experienced junk removal service like Junk King Alameda can make quick work of the structure without requiring you to lift a finger. Hiring professionals will also take the matter of disposal out of your hands, which can be a big help if you don’t already own a truck big enough to haul the leftover scrap wood to a nearby recycling center.

Either way, there’s no sense in waiting for the shed to actually collapse before getting rid of it and replacing it with a new one. Here’s everything you need to know to get rid of your old backyard shed and make room for something new.

The Importance of Shed Removal in Oakland, CA

Allowing a dilapidated old shed to stand in your backyard will cause more problems than just an eyesore. Any decaying building will present safety hazards to you and your family, with the risk increasing the longer it’s allowed to stand. As the wood decays, it weakens the structure of the shed, increasing the risk of collapse. Every time you open the door or accidentally bump into the wall of the shed, you could end up with the roof collapsing down on your head, potentially causing serious injury.

The rotting wood itself can also present health concerns. Dilapidated sheds are a hotspot for mold, which can cause respiratory symptoms if inhaled, especially if you or someone else in your household has a pre-existing respiratory condition like asthma or severe allergies. The decaying wood will also attract bugs and other pests like termites, which could end up spreading to your house. Shed removal in Oakland is especially important, as the humidity and frequent rainfall of the Bay Area can hasten the demise of your aging shed.

Don’t be put off by the shed removal cost in Oakland if you’ve already noticed the structure starting to decay. Waiting too long will only make the problems worse, and put you at risk of more expensive issues like a termite infestation. The best Oakland shed removal services can have the problem solved quickly, easily, and affordably.

The Best Way to Remove a Shed in Oakland, CA

We believe that the best way to remove a shed is to have it done professionally through an Oakland shed removal business. Of course, we’re probably a little biased, but many homeowners find that the convenience and simplicity of shed removal services are highly preferable to trying to handle the teardown themselves.

If you want to hire a junk removal company like Junk King Alameda to take care of your old shed, all you have to do is give us a call, set up an appointment so you can get a no-strings-attached cost estimate, and then just point our workers in the right direction and let them take care of the rest.

If you’d rather tear the shed down yourself, there are a few steps you should follow every time. First, you’ll need to prepare the shed for demolition, which involves taking everything out, unscrewing the hinges so you can remove the door, and taking out any glass or plastic windows. Some municipalities also require you to acquire a permit before demolishing any building or structure, including a shed, so do a little research to make sure you’re following all city codes.

Once you’ve removed everything from the shed, you’ll want to start with the roof. Because the demolition process will weaken the structure, you always want to work from the top down. Start at the peak of the roof and work your way down the sides as you remove the shingles, then remove any nails or screws and use a hammer or pry bar to remove the underlayment and the rafters.

Next, you’ll start removing the walls. Start with the wall that held the door, since it’s the least structurally sound. Pry off any siding or attachments, remove any nails or screws holding the wall to the floor and the other walls, and then carefully push the wall over. Repeat this process for each wall, one at a time.

Finally, if the shed had a floor, you can use the prybar to pull up the planks. Once you’re finished, you’ll have to dispose of the leftover debris. The materials will have to be sorted into garbage, recycling, and special disposal piles and discarded appropriately.

Things You’ll Need for Shed Removal in Oakland

If you want to tear down the shed by yourself, you’ll need a handful of tools for the job. A ladder is required so you can get up on the roof, and to dismantle the wood and shingles you’ll need a hammer, pliers, a screwdriver, a chisel for the window caulking, and a crowbar for the planks and rafters. We also highly recommend wearing safety gear while you’re working, including a hard hat, goggles, gloves, and boots. It’s also a good idea to rent a dumpster to collect all the materials.

If you want to bring in Junk King Alameda to handle the shed removal for you, you won’t need any tools at all. Just give us a call today at 1-888-888-JUNK, set up an appointment, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Reliable Junk Removable Services for San Leandro

What would you do if one day the weekly garbage pickup service simply stopped arriving because there simply wasn’t enough space in the landfill for the municipal trash service to take the trash? For the vast majority of us, this predicament would quickly lead to streets overflowing with trash and a serious public health crisis. We absolutely depend on trash pickup service to keep our livable spaces clean and hygienic. However, public authorities have long been aware that we face an impending landfill capacity crisis that could create serious challenges for how we dispose of the waste we accumulate.

The state of California has fortunately been at the forefront of dealing with this imminent waste crisis. Back in 1989, the state passed its landmark Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 (AB 939). This state law set forth the ambitious goal of diverting a full 50 percent of all solid waste from landfills by January 1, 2000. Though we didn’t make the 2000 timeline, there have been some impressive achievements in the areas of stimulating markets for recyclable materials, developing new waste prevention technologies, and strengthening the recycling and reusing industries.

In this short article, we will explore the statistics related to the landfill crisis in California and then explain a few things every homeowner and business owner can do to in the transition towards a zero waste future.

A Look at the Numbers behind the Landfill Crisis in California

At first glance, a 50 percent reduction in waste diversion from landfills might seem like an impressive accomplishment. However, in the year 2000 when the goal was set to be met, the other 50 percent of trash that we continued to accumulate amounted to 22 million tons of waste per year. Almost two decades later in 2018, CalRecycle (California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery) reported that California’s 14.1 million residences and 1.5 million businesses generated 77.6 million tons of municipal solid waste, more than triple what we were generating in 2000.

All of that trash eventually ends up in our state’s landfills. So what exactly does 77 million tons of waste per year look like? Consider the following illustration: At current waste rates, the state of California would generate well over 350 million tons of municipal solid waste. That amount of garbage would fill a canyon 15 miles long, a quarter of a mile wide, and as deep as a 20-story building.

Do we have enough empty canyons throughout the state for that type of garbage demand? Again, CalRecycle reports that “21 of the state’s 58 counties, having 41 percent of the population, will exhaust their disposal capacity within 15 years. Of these, 17 have 8 years or less capacity. It takes 7 to 10 years to plan, design, and permit a new landfill.”

Ways to Reduce the Waste We Send to the Landfill

Despite the impressive growth in recycling programs, our “landfill footprint” continues to be among the largest in the country. States like Idaho, North Dakota, and Connecticut have an average of just 10 tons of landfill waste per person. Californians, on the other hand, have an average of 35 tons of landfill garbage per person. The first step in lowering our landfill footprint, then, is to reduce our consumption rates. Simply put, the less we buy, the less we will throw away.

bulk item and trash removal

Another simple way to cut your landfill footprint by almost a third is to start a backyard compost pit. Organic materials, mostly discarded food and yard trimmings, make up approximately 30 percent of the waste stream that is collected by municipal trash services. By composting your leftover banana peels and fallen leaves, you can drastically reduce the amount of trash you send out to the curb each week. If you don’t have space in your yard for a compost pit, separating your organic waste for compost pickup is another great strategy.

Lastly, making an effort to donate or recycle your large, bulky junk items is another important element associated with reducing waste streams. Over 9 million tons of furniture end up in our nation´s landfills every year. Cutting back on one-use plastic bags is certainly important, but making a sincere effort to avoid sending your old sofa to the dump will make much more of an impact on reducing your landfill footprint.

Professional Junk Removal Services for Contra Costa

Junk king worer alongside junk king truck

Did you know that there were over 1.1 million people living in Contra Costa County in 2019? That´s almost double the amount of people that we had back in 1980. Of course, we understand. With our parks and great location just outside San Francisco it shouldn’t come as a surprise that so many people want to move here. Unfortunately, as more and more people flock to Contra Costa County, there are a series of problems that come with this surging demographic trend. Among one of the problems we face is how to deal with the increasing amount of trash that our growing population creates.

Double the amount of people should amount to double the amount of trash. However, as our consumer habits and trends grow, the amount of waste created by individuals and businesses is significantly higher than in the past. Where we put all that trash is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with.

In 2018, there was concern that waste dumped at a Contra Costa County landfill from the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard might have potentially contained radioactive material. While the final audit determined that it was unlikely that radioactive waste made its way into the landfill in our county, the scare itself goes to show that dealing with the enormous amount of waste we create needs to be taken seriously.

Fortunately, for residents and business owners in Contra Costa County, Junk King of Contra Costa offers professional, efficient, and affordable junk removal services to help you get rid of your junk in a responsible manner.

New call-to-actionWhat Junk King Contra Costa Offers

So why exactly should you choose Junk King Contra Costa to get rid of your junk?

Firstly, illegal dumping in Contra Costa County is an illegal and punishable offense. Illegal dumps often attract more waste, including potentially hazardous wastes and chemicals. Most local waste collection companies do not pick up bulky items like carpeting, large furniture, or other household hazardous wastes.

Illegal dumping is not only a public health hazard, but it also leads to increased costs for local government and industry associated with continuous clearing of illegally dumped wastes. According to the county government: “In the past years, the Contra Costa County has spent up to one million dollars per year on cleanup, hauling, and disposal associated with illegal dumping. Without adequate revenue, the funding available to establish and maintain effective illegal dumping prevention programs is limited. These costs may be passed along to residents in the form of higher service fees or property taxes.” Of course, if you are found dumping your waste illegally, you can also expect a sizeable fee.

e-waste recycling

Junk King of Contra Costa offers an efficient (and legal) way to get rid of almost all of your bulky junk items, including hot tubs, refrigerators, freezers, mattresses, computers and other “e-waste” items, TV´s, appliances, old furniture, yard waste, and more. Not only do we allow you to easily clear out space in your home, but we also make every effort to make sure that your junk items stay out of the landfills in our county that are quickly approaching maximum capacity.

Our owner Krishna Vepa started a Junk King franchise because due to his concern about the environment. Krishna has previous professional experience in renewables and recycling in the Hi Tech Industry. This experience has permitted Junk King of Contra Costa to develop a series of relationships with dozens of recycling organizations. We also deliver many of the used items we pick up to thrift stores, donations centers, and other similar organizations. Our solid commitment to the environment allows us to recycle or reuse 60 percent or more of the junk items that we pick up from our clients.

Another reason to choose Junk King of Contra Costa is because our customer service is second to none. We understand that our clients come to Junk King to get help solving problems they can’t easily solve themselves. For this reason, we make every effort to ensure that cleaning out your home or businesses is as easy and hassle-free as possible. Our team of professional junk removal technicians will do all the heavy lifting of furniture items, construction debris, foreclosure clean outs, yard waste, or any other trash that you might have accumulated over the years.

We are proud to have a great rating on Yelp. One of our most recent customer reviews states

“Had a great experience using Junk King today. My family was holding on to old couches and other furniture for months. Called Junk King a few days before to set up an appointment and it’s great to have had availability for a pick up today – on a Saturday no less. Quincy and Donzell were on time, friendly, moved very quickly and were very professional. They had masks on the whole time, which I appreciated.  I’m grateful for their help and their fair estimate to take all the crap we had.  We are enjoying the extra space we have now and should have called them sooner! Thanks also to the dispatcher, Rebecca, who was friendly and professional with setting up the appointment and taking care of the logistics. I’m sure I’ll be reaching out again after we declutter.”
