Start with Recycling

All you have to do is put them at the curb on the designated day for pickup. Using the city’s recycling program is perfect for getting rid of plastics, paper, and other basic recyclable materials that will fit in the bins. If you have a lot of recyclables every week, you can request a second bin at no additional cost or even purchase a third for a fee.
There are some limitations to using these carts, of course. For starters, they’re not big enough to recycle large items. They’re designed for household recyclables, but you may find that some large cardboard boxes won’t fit in the bin unless cut apart. You can resell some items if they’re in good condition. Note that these items are going to have to be in very good condition or be sold for fairly cheap. There are a number of avenues for reselling things. You can have a yard sale. This is one of the easiest options, though it does have some drawbacks. You have to do all the work, including setting up the tables, pricing items, and selling them. People will be all over your yard or driveway, too. Many also equate yard sales with cheap, so be ready to have some people try to haggle or say that your prices are too high.
There are a few other things to consider, too. It can be hard to get people to stop at your yard sale, especially if you’re not on a fairly busy street. You’ll need to put up signs to help bring in customers. Bad weather can also be a challenge. Be sure you have the proper permits to hold a yard sale, too. Typically, sales tax is due on many of the items sold at yard sales.
Just like donating items online, you can also sell online. Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and other websites can help you reach a large audience. You’ll want to include as many details in your listing as possible so people know exactly what they’re buying.
Finally, you may be able to take some of your items, especially furniture, to a local consignment shop. The shop will handle all of the work of displaying your items and selling them, but they will take a cut. This cut may be larger than what online platforms like eBay take, but you don’t have to worry about taking photos or shipping the items.
