Spring is here, and summer is right around the corner. This means you’ll soon be spending a lot more time outdoors, specifically in your backyard. Before you can really enjoy this outdoor space, though, you’ll need to clean it up and make sure it’s ready for use. This means more than just raking up the leaves and getting your outdoor furniture out of the garage. Before you can truly enjoy your backyard, you need to make certain it’s safe and that everything you’ll be using is ready. Here are a few tips for preparing your backyard for the coming spring and summer.

Do an Assessment of Your Backyard

The first step is to take a long, hard look at your backyard and determine what needs to go, what needs updating or repairs, and what new things you want to add. Look at the trees, flowers, bushes, and grass. Examine your shed and other outbuildings. Take a look at your kid’s toys and yard furniture. Make a note of anything you’ll put aside for junk removal. There’s no reason to keep something that’s broken. Also, create a separate pile of items that are in good shape but that you don’t use any longer. You can donate or resell these items.

Next, check your deck for signs of damage, and look at any paver stones you may have used for a patio or pathways. Examine any concrete for signs of cracks. You will likely need to at least spray weedkiller in these cracks to prevent weeds from growing up through them. You may also decide that you need to pour new concrete.

The second part of your assessment should focus on what you want to add to your backyard. This may involve putting in a concrete slab or other type of foundation. You may also determine that you need to move or fully remove other things in your backyard to make room for the additions you want to bring in.

Do the Yardwork First

During your assessment, you likely found some trees that needed to be trimmed and some flowerbeds that needed to be cleaned out. You may also need to remove some bushes and other flora that didn’t survive the winter. By starting with this chore, you’ll be able to see a clearer picture of your backyard. This can help you plan out how you want to set up the space for the summer. If you plan on removing any trees, flowerbeds, or other vegetation, now is the time to do that as well. There’s no point in cleaning up a flowerbed if you’re going to take it out to make room for a new shed.

Once you’ve dealt with all of this, you’ll need to set it aside for your yard waste removal service to take care of later. While you will definitely want to get rid of anything dead, consider giving away anything that you’re removing to make room for something new. You may have friends, family members, or neighbors who would like to transplant some of your flowers, or you may have another flowerbed you could move them to.

Take Down the Old Shed and Other Structures

Now that you have the trees and other growth cleaned up, it’s time to get rid of anything that’s about to fall down. If your shed has a hole in the roof or a damaged board on the side, you may be able to repair it without too much trouble. However, if the entire structure looks like it’s about to fall over, it may be time to remove it. You don’t want it falling over on your children or pets.

Another reason to get rid of an old shed, playhouse, or treehouse is if it’s no longer used. You may not have a lot in your shed. If you could move it all to the garage or replace that shed with a much smaller one, you’ll have more yard space. That may be very beneficial, especially if you have a small yard and want more space to entertain or for your kids or dogs to play. If you have older children, that old playhouse may now be a space for rats and other pests to live. You certainly don’t want that in your backyard, so it’s time to get rid of it.

When you do take these items down, you’ll want to get rid of the debris somehow. This is where Junk King Dayton comes in. Our team will haul off the remains of these old buildings. You don’t even need to get the pieces around to the front—we’ll haul it to our truck from the backyard.

Test Your Deck

Is your desk still sturdy? If it’s not, you’ll want to do repairs or replace the entire thing before you get a lot of people on it. If the issue is that a few planks are worn out, you can replace them fairly easily. However, if it’s a support beam, it can take more work. Even if your deck isn’t that high off the ground, someone can still get hurt if the board they’re standing on breaks. If your deck is starting to show its age, it may be better to simply replace it.

If you need to build a deck or want to extend your current deck, you may need to remove some flowerbeds, shrubs, or other things to make room. Building the deck itself will also create some construction debris such as cut off pieces of wood. You’ll want to find someone to help you with debris removal, especially since this waste isn’t necessarily something you can bag up and put in the trash bin.

Get Rid of Old Items like Furniture

Is your patio furniture still in good condition? If you store it in the garage or shed during the winter, it’s likely fine. However, if you’ve had the same set for years or leave it out year-round, it may be time to replace it. Don’t be afraid to get rid of anything that is showing its age, especially if it may not be safe to sit on or use. Old toys like swing sets may also need to go. If your kids don’t play with these items any longer, they’re just taking up space in your yard and could cause harm.

Think About Walkways and Sidewalks

One fun addition to any yard is a paver stone walkway. These paths are much easier to create than cement sidewalks, and you can remove them whenever you want. You can use different sized or colored pavers to create a pattern or add some whimsy to your backyard. If you decide to remove an old shed, getting rid of the paver pathway to it is a simple matter. Just pick up the stones and move them elsewhere. You may need to put down grass seed in the spots where they were since those areas will definitely stand out in your yard. Once the grass sprouts, though, those spots will disappear.

When you put down your pavers, you may want to add some outdoor solar lights next to them. You can also put these lights next to a sidewalk or by the stairs going up to your deck. This will help anyone in your yard see where they’re walking, reducing the chance that they will trip and fall. Remember, you’ll be financially responsible for any injuries that occur on your property, so adding lights is a very good idea if you know people will be in your yard after sundown.
