It’s hard to believe that this year is almost over, but the new year is right around the corner. With it comes New Year’s resolutions and other plans for the next 365 days. You may have already come up with resolutions and goals for next year, which is great. You may have decided to change your diet, stop engaging in bad habits, or complete specific projects.
Did you include keeping your home clean and junk-free as one of those goals? If not, you might want to. Even if your home is generally clutter-free, there may still be some things you can do to make it cleaner. If your house is a mess, this is one resolution that you should definitely make. Don’t Try to do it All at Once
One of the biggest reasons why some people put off doing a deep clean of their home or doing a major purge is because the task seems so large and time-consuming that they just don’t know where to start. Cleaning your entire house can seem very overwhelming, especially if you have a garage, basement, or attic that you know is full of stuff you have to sort through.
Instead of trying to find a weekend or even a full week to do nothing but clean the house, break the project up into smaller sections. Maybe clean a room at a time or a floor at a time. Leave areas such as the basement for a weekend where that’s the only space you work on. If that’s still too much, break the rooms down. Do your closet one day, the space under your bed the next, and your bathroom storage the day after. There’s no right or wrong way to clean your home, so do it however works for you.
It can help to make a checklist of all the spaces you want to clean. This can help make the task seem more manageable and give you a way of seeing that you’re making progress. Every part of the room you complete gets marked off until you can cross off the entire space.

Set Aside a Space for Garbage, including Large Junk

Typically, you would put all of this stuff in your garage, but it’s also winter. You likely want to get your vehicles in the garage to protect them from the ice and snow.

We will come in and remove the items you want us to take from whatever room they’re in. Just point them out or mark them with a sticky note so we know what to take. We’ll handle all of the work getting the furniture and other things out to our truck. While you may still need a space to put boxes or bags of things you don’t want, you won’t need to worry about moving old furniture.
In addition to trash, you may want to make two other piles: donation and giveaway. You may have things you don’t need that you know a friend or family member wants. Family heirlooms likely need to stay in the family, so you may want to set them aside until you can reach out to relatives to see who wants the heirlooms. Anything that’s in good condition can be set aside for donation. Some charities will even come to pick up bags of clothing, shoes, and other household goods.

Getting rid of things for your children can cause a fight later if you donate something they really wanted to keep, so always do your best to get them to help. It will help you avoid these types of fights later on.
When Do You Call Junk King?
Ideally, you’ll give us a call after you’ve gone through every room and are ready to get rid of all your junk, but that’s not always an option. If you have a lot of stuff you need to get rid of, you may need to call us in to remove some stuff about halfway through. This will give you more room to sort through the rest of your things. With most houses, you won’t have to do this. However, if you’ve inherited a home with a lot of stuff that you need to sort through or get rid of, you might need us to come out a couple of times.
Have a Plan to Maintain How Clean Your Home Is
Once you’ve finished your new year’s cleaning, you must ensure your home remains clean and junk-free throughout the rest of the year. That can be difficult, especially if you don’t often have a lot of free time to devote to cleaning.
You can do a few small things to help keep your home junk-free. First, simply make sure you don’t let some common trash build up. Old mail, newspapers, magazines, and similar items can end up creating piles of garbage on the counter or your coffee table. You should purge junk mail every day, and get rid of old magazines or newspapers when the next edition arrives.
If something breaks and you don’t plan on repairing it, get rid of it as soon as you can. That means giving Junk King a call for large items such as appliances and furniture.
