City Services Have Downsides

While using Dayton’s bulky pickup may seem easy and very straightforward, there are a few downsides to it. First, the pickup is only done one Friday of the month. This Friday varies depending on where you live, so you do have to check the city’s schedule. You also have to submit a pickup request. If you don’t, the city will skip your address, even if you have bulky waste at the curb. If you miss the bulky pickup day for your neighborhood, you will have to figure out some place to store your bulky garbage for a month. If you leave it out at the curb, you could be fined.

Another downside is that there are many items that the city will not pick up. They will not take automotive parts, drywall, plaster, wood, air conditioners, hot tubs, HVAC items, and some other unacceptable items. They also have specific rules for certain types of waste. For example, ward waste has to be tied into bundles, and those bundles cannot weigh more than 35 pounds. Glass must be taped to prevent shattering. The city will also not pick up anything from a foreclosure or eviction.

If you don’t want to make use of the city’s bulk pickup, you could load up your junk and haul it to the city landfill yourself. In theory, this sounds very easy. In practice, however, there are some downsides to hauling away your bulky waste.

First, you have to have a vehicle capable of hauling whatever junk it is you’re getting rid of. This typically means you need a truck. If you don’t have one, you’ll have to ask to borrow one from a friend or family member. You could also rent a truck, but if you do any damage to it while loading up old furniture or appliances, you will likely be charged for the repairs.

Other than that, you don’t need to move anything out of your home. We will remove everything.
