When You Need Property Cleanout Services In Fairfax

property cleanout services

People and businesses are constantly on the move.

More than 12 percent of tenants in rental homes and apartments move annually. Unfortunately, there are no accurate figures for commercial tenants, but the common problem with all those vacated properties is that they cannot be leased again until the junk is removed and the property is cleaned.

And each day that rental property remains unoccupied is another day without revenue.

Are you a manager of a vacant property in Fairfax who needs to clear out junk left by the previous tenants? It’s one of the more frustrating aspects of property management, but a property that’s been vacated must be cleaned – and cleaned out – before it can be leased again.

This is why Junk King Fairfax offers expert property cleanout services.

Property Cleanouts – By the Numbers

It’s estimated that in the United States there are over 44,000,000 renter-occupied households, representing over one-third of the population. While many of these are single-family homes being rented, a vast majority of renter-occupied households are apartments.

In Fairfax County, for example, the total number of rental complex apartments and townhouses in January 2019 was over 81,50 units. That’s in a county with almost 1,150,000 residents. And, as of 2018, there were more than 31,150 businesses in the county, a large percentage of which operated in leased properties.

In the city of Fairfax, the population was estimated to be about 24,600 in 2021, of which, about 18,300 are over 18. While almost 85 percent of married couples represent homeowners, the overall level of homeownership in the city of Fairfax stands at about 70 percent. This means close to 30 percent of adults – or 5,500 residents – are potentially renters.

And one source listed just over 200 commercial properties for lease in the city of Fairfax, with over 1,200 commercial real estate properties available for lease or rent in Fairfax County, Virginia, including office spaces, retail, industrial buildings, and other types of commercial properties.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau almost 25 percent of tenants in renter-occupied housing units lived in a different location the year before. Their reasons for moving vary, but the main reason people relocate is a job transfer, which accounts for almost 10 percent of moves.

When Your Fairfax Rental Property Needs a Cleanout

As any landlord or property manager knows, cleaning out rental homes, condominiums, and apartments can be a tough task requiring physical strength and hard work. For example, if large, old furniture and other bulky items are left behind, someone often has to haul these heavy items down flights of stairs and through hallways.

And it is always an unfortunate situation when property managers must dispose of a former tenant’s abandoned possessions.

When a tenant must vacate because of legal reasons – evictions and so forth – it can be a stressful experience for everyone involved. Unfortunately, many tenants do not fully clean the properties before they relocate, especially if they are being evicted. This is often true for those tenants who break their leases and move out without notice.

Too many times, tenants simply move out and leave the burden of cleaning out and disposing of their “junk” on the landlord or property manager.

These same types of scenarios occur with rental homes, as well. And, while some larger property management firms have the resources required to effectively handle these property cleanout situations, most property managers end up spending far more time and money than they should just getting rid of the junk.

In some situations, they may be able to sell or auction off some of the items, but this is not as common of a practice as people might think. In most scenarios, abandoned items are simply treated as “junk” that the tenants didn’t want to bother taking with them and are disposed of.

Property rental professionals also work with short-term rental homes, vacation properties, duplexes, triplexes, and other types of leased properties. Like house and apartment renters, these tenants can also vacate rental units leaving large amounts of old furniture and other items that need to be cleaned out and properly disposed of.

And, like apartment managers and other landlords, commercial property managers can easily get overwhelmed with the work required for property cleanouts and junk hauling.

But somebody’s got to do it…

Great Pricing with Junk King Fairfax for Property Cleanout Services

At Junk King, we pride ourselves on providing world-class customer service. As the Number One junk removal company in North America, it’s simply part of what we do. What we also do is offer the best pricing for junk removal in our service area.

That includes Fairfax as well as all the other communities in the greater Washington DC area.

And that’s because Junk King Fairfax guarantees to beat any written estimate from any comparable operator. In other words any comparable junk removal company that is licensed, insured, and has a recycling-based operation like Junk King.

In addition, we provide you with several ways to get a free estimate:

  • On-site: The most accurate way for us to get you a free, no-obligation on-site estimate.
  • By Phone: Call 1-888-888-JUNK or live chat with our customer service representatives.
  • By Text: Text a photo of your items to 737-888-5865, and we will text back an estimate.
  • Online: Click the “Pricing” tab in the menu above, then scroll to “Pricing Estimator” and click the green “Launch Pricing Estimator” button.

Another aspect of our great pricing is that we do not charge you by the weight of your load.

This is how many other firms in the junk removal industry work, but it’s a disadvantage for customers whose junk items are particularly heavy. In other words, a half-truckload of heavy furniture and old appliances would cost you far more than a half-truckload of old clothes and bedding, for example.

That’s not how we do things at Junk King. We only charge you for the amount of space your junk takes up in our truck. This means savings for you and simple, upfront pricing from us.

Starting A Kitchen Remodel? Junk King Is Here To Help With Junk Removal

kitchen appliance removal fairfax virginia

Northern Virginia is home to a wide range of folks in just about every socio-economic category. And there are hundreds of thousands of homeowners in the region, many of whom are itching to make some improvements on those homes.

The motivation could simply be that they’re tired of that old kitchen or bathroom. Or, it could be that they want to put their home on the market and know that a kitchen remodel will boost the value and asking price of their house considerably.

And it will create a great deal of trash, rubble, and junk materials to be disposed of.

Why Create a Mess with a Kitchen Remodel Anyway?

When homeowners decide to sell, an amazing thing often happens: they soon begin to see all the flaws, damage, and outdated features that can diminish the perceived value of their home.

And, more often than not, these homeowners also want to net the highest value and equity from the home sale as possible. So, they start to make repairs and consider upgrades.

But what should they focus on, and what should they forgo?

The website Investopedia notes that,

“The projects that add considerable value are big favorites of fix-it-and-flip-it advocates—and they should be high on a homeowner’s list too. While most of these efforts will not recoup their costs, some will come close. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) cites new siding, kitchen renovations (new countertops and state-of-the-art appliances), and new windows as projects with some of the highest return on investment, often recouping 80% or more of their costs during resale.”

And this is backed up by Remodeling Magazine that emphasized that the only home improvement likely to return the most at resale was a minor (roughly $15,000) kitchen remodel, which returned 92.9 percent of investment.

Not bad, considering that would mean adding a potential $14,000 to your asking price.

Kitchen and bathroom remodels continue to be two of the best investments you can make in your house. “They’re always right up there at the top of the list,” says Sal Alfano, Remodeling’s editorial director. “They’re the big, sexy rooms that new home builders splurge on, so when buyers are shopping around that’s what they want in an existing home, too.”

On the downside, if you do it yourself – as many homeowners tend to do – it also means having to take of your own mess.

Depending on the scope and size of your remodeling efforts, you could be looking at new appliances, counters, cabinets, sinks, and flooring. In other words, if your remodel removes everything and the kitchen sink, you’ll have multiple pickup truck loads of debris and junk to get rid of.

And that also means multiple instances of loading, hauling, unloading, and returning from a landfill or waste transfer station. Along with fuel, time, dump fees, and expenses for tie-downs and tarps, etc.

Or you could call in the experts – Junk King Fairfax – to take care of it all for you.

Yes, really.

At Junk King Fairfax we are quite serious about being a green junk removal operation. And we demonstrate this by our commitment to the goal of our company’s environmentally friendly mission.

That mission is to recycle, reuse, and donate as much of the junk that we pick up as possible

We have made incredibly great strides in this pursuit and, In fact, Junk King is unique in the industry because we are the only nationally recognized junk removal company that regularly maintains a recycling rate of 60 percent or more of everything we haul away.

We can do this because we maintain working relationships with several local donation centers, non-profit organizations, and local recyclers.

This means that all the trash, debris, and other solid waste that gets hauled off your property ends up in a far better destination than one of our local landfills or trash incineration plants.

Removing old building materials, cardboard boxes, packing crates, and other miscellaneous junk items that pile up during a remodeling project can be both time-consuming and labor-intensive.

The good news is that Junk King Fairfax is trained and equipped to take care of that for you. We can come out to your home and haul away any debris and other junk items that have been generated during your project.

And we do it all with award-winning service and professionalism!

Deck Removal – What Your Options Are in The Fairfax Area

deck removal options and dumpster rental in fairfax

There are few pleasures in life that compare to spending a late afternoon or early evening relaxing on your deck, sipping a cool drink, and enjoying the soothing warmth that settles in after a hot day.

Unless your deck is creaking, cracked, rotted and the railing is coming off. That’s when it’s time for a replacement.

One of the sad truths about being a homeowner is that nothing lasts forever. Your mortgage payment may seem that way, but structures like your deck need to be replaced from time to time.

But what do you do with all the debris after the deck removal? Junk King Fairfax has some options.

Deck Removal in Fairfax: What You Need to Know

If you plan to replace your deck or wooden porch this spring, or sooner, one of the unavoidable tasks will be disposing of the old lumber, hardware, and other debris from the old structure. And the question to be asked is, “How do you dispose of old wood debris properly?”

Not all deck building materials are the same, and even various wood products are different. So, knowing what you’re working with and how it can – or cannot – be disposed of is important, especially if you’re planning to take it all to a landfill.

When it comes to wood, for example, the most common deck materials are redwood, cedar, and pine. There are also composite materials that have been used for the last few decades.

These newer materials are made by combining blends of plastic and waste wood fibers. While these boards won’t splinter and don’t need to be stained or painted, they don’t last forever either. Probably the most well-known version is Trex, headquartered right here in Virginia. Since the late 1990s, it has been used increasingly by homeowners and others for decking projects.

However, while it can last over 20 years with the proper care and maintenance, that still means that many of the early decks made with composite materials are due for replacement.

Another “specialty” wood product commonly used in deck construction is pressure-treated wood. Whether it is strictly used for the support beams and framing, or for an entire deck structure, pressure-treated wood is long-lasting and highly resistant to decay and insects.

The folks at This Old House describe it this way,

“Lasting about 15 years, this is the least expensive type of decking. Most pressure-treated wood is made from Southern yellow pine, which is quick to splinter if not maintained. When working with this wood, always use gloves, wear a mask, and never burn it because the toxic chemicals in the wood that prevent rot and termites can also be harmful to your health. These chemicals are also highly corrosive so for best results, use only stainless steel fasteners.”

There is a big problem with pressure-treated wood, however. Disposal.

These materials (along with railroad ties) cannot be put into the residential waste bins nor dumped along with other household trash and waste materials.

According to Fairfax County,

“Paneling, pressure-treated or nonpressure treated wood can be taken to the I-66 Transfer Station or I-95 Landfill Complex for disposal. Must not exceed eight feet in length.”

In fact, if you are able to dispose of your own deck debris and waste materials, odds are that a great deal of it will need to be cut down to fit into your truck bed. Not to mention that you will be moving that material at least three times: from the old deck site to your truck, up into (or onto) your truck or trailer, then off to one of the limited number waste disposal facilities nearby, and then off your vehicle.

The good news is you have options! And Junk King Fairfax is ready to help you with that.

Affordable Deck Remodel Service for the Greater Fairfax Region

As a homeowner, you already know that when you work on your own deck replacement project it’s going to mean having to move, load, and dispose of piles of lumber, boards, metal fasteners, possibly concrete rubble, and assorted other waste and trash that results from your efforts.

But you may not want to take the time, nor have the inclination or even the means to load it, haul it, and get rid of it all yourself.

And it’s probably not likely that you’re going to get a friend or relative to do all that for you…

Enter Junk King!

No matter whether you live in Falls Church, Vienna, Lorton, or most anywhere in and near Fairfax, the junk removal professionals at Junk King Fairfax can take of your deck removal cleanup and disposal easily, quickly, and efficiently.

And not only do we make it easy, fast, and efficient for you – we make it affordable!

That’s because our prices are the lowest in our service area and we guarantee to beat any other written estimate from a comparable operator – which means a junk removal company that is also licensed, insured, and operates a recycling-based business to help keep our local landfills free of excess debris – just like we do.

Deck Removal with a Junk King Dumpster Rental

If you live in the Fairfax area, another great option for your deck removal project is to make use of a dumpster rental from Junk King Fairfax.

With one of our conveniently sized MINI Dumpsters, you can take your time loading your deck debris and after three days, our expert dumpster rental team will come back and remove it for you. That means no hauling, no dumping, no multiple trips to the dump!

So, how does it work?

With Junk King Fairfax, you pay only for the space you use, whether you have us come and pick it all up or you make use of our dumpster rental options. And, unlike the industry standard practice of charging a single price for a dumpster, we provide flexible pricing options to give our customers better value.

So, what does that look like? We offer three pricing tiers: Minimum, Half, and Full.

Our minimum price is the lowest fee charged for us to drop off and pick up the MINI Dumpster. This means, if your deck debris pile is small, you may qualify for the minimum charge. If you fill the MINI dumpster at or about halfway, you’ll receive a 30 percent discount (depending on location) off the full price. And, if your MINI is more than half full, we simply charge the full price for our MINI Dumpster service.

And, keep in mind, that even though our rental dumpster is conveniently sized at about 8 feet wide by 11 feet long, it’s easy to get debris into and holds up to 12-cubic feet. That’s roughly the equivalent of 16 average dryers – and with room to spare!

Three days isn’t long enough?  We have 3, 5, and 7-day pricing available for our MINI Dumpster rentals. And all with no hidden charges!

Fairfax – Junk Removal Sorting Tips

Junk King gets rid of your junk. We know that it can be a challenge to get rid of what needs to go when you are moving and that’s why our Fairfax – Junk Removal options are so popular. We understand that not every municipality or city has adequate junk removal services. That’s why we’re here to fill in with an Eco friendly and efficient business model.

We remove all sorts of junk that includes mattresses, chairs, tables, bookcases, cubicles and desks to name just a few. You can book online with our Fairfax – Junk Removal option or give us a call to get started.

One of the questions that our customers ask us most often is how to get started. They’ve got sometimes years worth of stuff in their house and they want to be able to separate the junk from what they want to take with them when they move.

Here’s a few suggestions on how to go about making two different piles.

Gather the Tools You’ll Need
There’s a tool for every job and sorting through your junk at home is no exception. You’ll need to put together several garbage bags, a few laundry baskets and we like to suggest that you get a full pad of sticky notes and a magic marker.

After that, it’s a good idea to break a big job down into smaller more manageable pieces. For example, our Fairfax – Junk Removal professionals can only haul things away for one room at a time. That’s why we suggest that you only sort in the same fashion. Take one of your laundry baskets and a few stickies and head into that back bedroom.

If you can go through the closets and put this stuff that you’re taking with you in one laundry basket and market accordingly, you can leave the rest for us when we show up.

Time Yourself.
We also like to suggest that our clients time themselves as they move from room to room. Getting caught in waves of nostalgia over a dinner jacket that you haven’t worn in 10 years in the back of a closet won’t help you get the job done.

The garbage bags make excellent starting points for what you think might be going to the recycling center. Of course, these are our suggestions and you can put your own plan together. However, this is one of the ideas that’s worked for several of our Fairfax – Junk Removal clients.

Using a Home Dumpster Rental to Transform Your Garage in Fairfax

When was the last time your garage had enough free space for you to park a vehicle inside? For most people, the answer is likely to be “a long time ago.” Garages are handy because they’re a great place to store all the things we don’t have room for indoors, but that same feature can also be the reason they turn into a space filled with junk. Whether you’ve run out of space or you’ve simply decided it’s time to make a change before the garage gets too out of control, embarking on a clean-up project is the right choice. With a Fairfax home dumpster rental and the ability to immediately toss out all the things you don’t want to keep, you can make quick work of what might look like quite the daunting task.

Develop a plan of attack before you rent

Home Dumpster Rental The easiest way to estimate how much you will likely need to dispose of once you begin cleaning out the garage is to remove its contents all at once to get a “big picture” look at everything. For most people, that’s the kind of thing they only want to do one time, so it’s best to do this when you’ve already made other decisions about how to dispose of the garbage. While visually estimating the volume of the refuse the project will generate is very difficult, you can take the time to assess what you’re most likely to keep ahead of time.

Spend an afternoon looking over everything you can easily access within the space, thinking carefully about what you know needs to go and what items are still worth saving. How many things have you mentally marked for disposal? If there are only a few things and fixing up the garage is more of a matter of better organization, you can probably dispose of your items through a municipal bulk pick-up trash day. However, what if it becomes apparent very quickly that you have many things which have since outlived their usefulness? Then it’s time to more closely examine the question of whether a home dumpster rental is right for you.

Before you move on, formulate a firm plan for how you’ll tackle the cleaning project. If you don’t have an order to follow, it’s easy to move from task to task without completing anything. Know how you’ll move things out, how you’ll sort them, and how you’ll dispose of them, too. Once you think you’re ready, other considerations come into the picture.

Choosing a home dumpster rental company that works for you

Not every agency that rents dumpsters offer the same level of service. Even if you’re intent on moving quickly and trashing out the garage with as few delays as possible, it is important to slow down and take the time to ensure that you rent a dumpster that aligns with your needs. For example, you likely do not want to rent a “construction” sized dumpster, which could take up far more space than you expect. Such dumpsters also typically use a pricing structure based on the total weight of the removed debris, which may equal a more expensive project depending on what you discard.

How much you’re willing to pay can have a big influence on the choice you make at this stage. What if you know you’ll need to toss a lot of things, including heavy objects, but you aren’t sure exactly how much? A more forgiving pricing breakdown in use by some businesses charges customers based on the volume of the dumpster used, rather than the weight. Fill up less than half, and you get a discounted rate. Only if you go over the halfway point and fill the dumpster will you pay more, but it should still be a fair price.

Before you put down a firm booking, ask the providers you speak to about acceptable waste. What can you throw into the dumpster? You could have everything from an old washing machine to stacks of old magazines to throw away — so will they take it all? What if you have old computers or TVs to throw into the mix? Be careful, because not every rental will work for a garage clean-up project. Some providers may only accept construction debris, yard waste, or non-electrical waste. Be aware that some wastes, such as old motor oil, may not be allowed in a dumpster at all. Others, like old cans of paint, should undergo a drying process before disposal in a dumpster. Check with the company you intend to use on their policies.

the do you really need it checklist

Do you want to minimize your impact on the world as you throw these things away? There are green dumpster rentals out there that can be the perfect fit for such a situation. Instead of shipping your junk straight to a landfill, some businesses will meticulously process your discarded trash to find recyclable materials. Who knew a cleanup project could help the environment? With all these things considered, you can solidify your pick and prepare to give your garage the facelift it needs.

The big day: tackling your garage clean-out

Once you’ve finished picking a dumpster service, it’s time to schedule the first day of your rental and prepare to tackle the project. Now is when the value of bringing in a dumpster becomes apparent immediately. During the convenient delivery to your home, you can have the dumpster placed in your driveway, and with supports if necessary to prevent damage. With your oversized trash can just a few feet away from the entrance to the garage, you can make quick work of disposal. Instead of filling bag after bag or lugging heavy objects to the curb, you can pitch them all straight into the dumpster — it’s that easy.

the complete summer cleaning guide

While you throw unwanted items into your rental, separate the rest of your things into two piles. Mentally label them the “keep” and “sell” stacks. You’re likely to come across several items that you don’t want, but which it might not make sense to throw into the dumpster. These you can consider selling online or donating to local thrift stores instead. Once you’ve finished moving all the items out, you can do a deep clean of the garage itself.

Wrapping up when things are done

All that’s left at this point is to move your “keep” items back into place, and voila: a garage you can use to safely park your car, a perk that comes with advantages of its own. Satisfied? Call the rental agency again and let them know you’re ready to return the dumpster. They should dispatch someone as soon as possible to come and haul it all away for good. This way, you don’t need to spend days or weeks waiting for regular garbage service to remove everything you didn’t want. If you chose a “green” rental, you can also enjoy the fact that at least some of your garage’s old clutter will go on to have a second life in new applications.

How Much Is It to Rent a Dumpster in Fairfax?

How much does it cost to rent a dumpster in Fairfax, Virginia?

how much is it to rent a dumpsterThe answer to that question is going to vary depending on a few different factors. Ideally, any dumpster rental company you are considering should be happy to provide you with a no-obligation price quote. You can get quotes from a few different providers and then compare costs as a means of deciding where to rent your dumpster.

Here are a few different factors that may impact your cost:

  • The size of the dumpster you decide to rent: With some junk removal companies, the question “How much is it to rent a dumpster?” is perhaps most contingent on the size of dumpster you choose to rent. Many companies serving this niche offer half a dozen different dumpster rental sizes, usually ranging from 10 cubic yards to around 50 or 60 cubic yards. Obviously, you are going to pay more to rent a bigger dumpster.

  • How long you need the dumpster: Is your project a weekend cleanout or a renovation where you expect the demolition stage to take a week or longer? The answer will reflect in the cost of your dumpster rental. You will need to pay extra if you wish to keep the bin for longer. Most dumpster rental companies have multiple different tiers, based on the length of your rental. By standard, these tiers will probably be set for three-day rentals, five-day rentals, seven-day rentals, etc. You can rent bins for longer, of course, but you will need to arrange that with the company.

  • Your location: The location of your home or business is always going to affect how much you pay for a dumpster rental. Any dumpster rental service involves both a bin delivery and a bin pickup. The distance that the delivery/pickup driver needs to travel to reach your location, therefore, is going to be a major factor in the cost of your rental. As such, it’s not a bad idea to look at where different dumpster rental companies are in relation to you. If you live in the heart of Fairfax, you will probably save money by finding a dumpster rental company located in or near the downtown area.

  • Availability: Especially with dumpster rental companies that offer a variety of different sizes to choose from, how much you pay might depend on the availability of the type of bin you need. For instance, if the dumpster rental company nearest to you has rented out all its 15 cubic yard units, you might have to pay extra to bump up to the next biggest size or to have the dumpster delivered from another location.

  • Type of trash: Some companies rent out different types of dumpsters for different types of trash. Some might have specific bins for construction debris, yard waste, electronic waste, or the like. In general, you can expect to pay slightly different rates depending on the type of bin you choose to rent. The variance in cost is because some types of trash are more difficult to dispose of safely than others. For instance, electronics or appliances often can’t just get dumped in the nearest landfills. There are necessary protocols that companies follow to prevent pollution and dangerous environmental effects. As a result, tougher-to-handle waste will sometimes cost more to get rid of than more standard garbage. In some cases, though, you might find companies that sort your junk for you at no additional cost.

  • The amount of junk you have: As we already mentioned, there are dumpster rental companies out there that bill flat rates based on dumpster sizes. There are also businesses that bill on a more contingent basis, either based on weight or on how much dumpster space you fill. In many ways, these models are more customer-friendly, as you pay based on the amount of trash you are disposing of and not based on the bin you choose. Especially if you have no idea which dumpster size is right for your situation, looking for a company that bills based on weight or dumpster space might be a better option.

  • The company you choose: Even aside from the other items featured on this list, different dumpster rental companies charge slightly different rates for their rentals. These rates may be based on a company’s longevity or reputation or might just shift as different services try to compete with one another. Because prices vary so much, it’s always a smart strategy to get three or four quotes to compare. If you only get one quote, it will be difficult to know whether it’s on the high or low end of the market.

  • Fees and add-ons: Some dumpster rental companies have billing systems that supplement the cost of your actual dumpster hire with fees and add-on charges. Permit fees, dumping fees, rental fees, and other additional expenses are all semi-common. Fees aren’t a massive problem if they aren’t pushing you out of your budget range and if the company is being transparent about them. However, just make sure you know what you are dealing with upfront. When you get a quote, ask if the price estimate is locked in or if there will be any additional costs or fees. You shouldn’t expect a guaranteed quote—especially if your dumpster rental company bills based on the amount of bin space you use. However, any dumpster rental company worth its salt should either disclose fees or clarify that there are no hidden fees. You can do some internet research here as well, to find out if a company has any complaints about unfair or misleading pricing practices.

Start Asking Around: How Much Is It to Rent a Dumpster in Fairfax, VA?

Renting a dumpster is an efficient way of streamlining any extensive cleanout process. Whether you are divesting yourself of unwanted belongings, preparing to move your business to a new location, or renovating your kitchen, waste is going to build up quickly. Having a place on your property where you can toss everything temporarily can help keep the project moving at a steady clip.

Ideally, a dumpster rental should also be affordable. After all, you are just paying for the bin. The actual cleaning and hauling work remains DIY, which makes for a cheaper price tag than full-service junk removal. Just how affordable your dumpster rental is, though, will depend on all the factors listed above.

To find the best price, start asking around. Look at different companies in Fairfax, research their websites for ballpark pricing figures, or call for more accurate price quotes. Clear a couple of hours to devote to the research process, and you should find a dumpster rental service that meets your needs for a price that seems fair.

Fairfax Times Article Exerpt — When Junk King finds treasure in trash

Joey Powers was helping a woman in her late 90s clean out her house after the death of her husband when he stumbled across the cabinet of knives. It turned out that the woman’s husband had worked as a coroner for the U.S. Army during World War I, and he’d used the knives to perform autopsies.
“Especially in the D.C. area, there’s so much history, and so much that the older generations are getting rid of now,” Powers said. “Even though we have to let a lot of it go, it’s really cool to be able to take these little pieces of history and give them a little bit more life.”
Joey Powers donated a collection of photographs he found from the Alexandria area to the George Washington Historical Society in Mount Vernon.
“It’s not every single day that we’re running into priceless antiques or anything, but it certainly happens,” Joey said, prompting Graham to joke that his drivers might all turn into antique dealers someday.
Junk King boasts its drivers’ integrity as a chief selling point. They’re instructed to inform customers if they find something potentially valuable instead of trying to sneak it away.
“They’re honest guys, and if they weren’t, they wouldn’t last here,” Graham said, citing an example of when he managed to stop an Anacostia customer from throwing a print by Maxfield Parrish, an influential, early 20th-century painter, into the garbage can.
