5 Reasons Why You Should Be Recycling E-Waste Instead of Trashing It

Not everyone is familiar with the term “e-waste,” but almost everyone has some at home or at work.

A great description is provided by the Environmental Protection Agency website, or EPA. It states that “e-waste”, “electronic waste”, “e-scrap,” and “end-of-life electronics” are terms often used to describe used electronics that are nearing the end of their useful life, and are discarded, donated or given to a recycler.

The EPA goes on to point out, however,

“Though “e-waste” is the commonly used term, EPA considers e-waste to be a subset of used electronics and recognizes the inherent value of these materials that can be reused, refurbished or recycled to minimize the actual waste that might end up in a landfill or improperly disposed in an unprotected dump site either in the US or abroad.”

And that’s what Junk King Fairfax also sees as the biggest problem when it comes to e-waste removal and disposal in the Fairfax region, as well as the rest of the United States.

E-Waste Disposal and Recycling E-Waste: How’s That Working Out forE-Waste Disposal and Recycling E-Waste: How’s That Working Out for Us? Us?

We live in a world that is largely dependent on electronic devices in most every arena of life. At home, at work, and at play, we use electronics almost daily – and we often do so with little thought to how they’re manufactured nor  how they are disposed of.

And we routinely toss out old electronics without considering any potential consequences of e-waste.

As Earth911 relates for us,

“What is considered e-waste? More than just outdated mobile phones, e-waste is any electronic waste that is no longer wanted or is now obsolete, whether it works or not. Televisions, set-top boxes, DVD players, stereos, copiers, fax machines, tablets, computers, and plenty more electronic devices all become e-waste as soon as they are no longer wanted.”

Because electronic technology poses severe environmental consequences when it is landfilled as e-waste, it is vital that we recycle e-waste responsibly.

For example, when electronics break down over time, they release toxic chemicals into the soil, contaminating plants and trees. Improper disposal of e-waste can lead to toxins such as mercury, lead, and cadmium leaching into the groundwater, which can then flow into streams, ponds, and lakes.

In addition, if e-waste isn’t recycled, it’s often burned in incinerators. But because electronics are made up of plastics, glass, and metals, these produce dangerous emissions when burnt. Unfortunately, tons of waste electronics and other solid waste ends up in our oceans each year. The results of ocean dumping can be deadly to marine organisms, disturb biodiversity, and harm ecosystems.

The problem for most of us is that e-waste isn’t easy nor convenient to recycle.

While many local county and city governments often have e-waste collection days a few times a year, homeowners often end up having to store these unwanted or broken electronic waste items until they can be dropped off. And, while many electronic stores accept old electronics for recycling at no cost, this isn’t always simple or convenient either.

Which is why Junk King Fairfax specializes in e-waste disposal and recycling e-waste.

When Recycling E-Waste is a Challenge at Home or at Work

It’s a fact that we produce vast quantities of electronic waste in this country every year.

According to statistics put together by Earth911, in 2019, the U.S. generated 6.92 million tons of e-waste, which is equivalent to about 46 pounds per person. That means that in Fairfax County alone, for example, it’s quite probable that we generated almost 54 million tons of e-waste!

And, as a nation, we recycled only 15 percent of it.

By the way, the value of the raw materials that was contained in the e-waste produced in the U.S. during 2019 equaled $7.49 billion. In other words, without a comprehensive and effective recycling process for our old electronics, we are throwing away literally billions of dollars of gold, silver, and palladium, among other precious metals.

Tossing E-Waste in the Trash is not Recycling

But you cannot simply put your smaller old electronics in your recycling bin at home or at work, nor even in your commercial recycling dumpster.

Recycling e-waste requires disassembling the electronics, separating, and categorizing the contents by materials, and then cleaning them. E-waste items are then shredded mechanically for additional sorting with the use of advanced separation technologies.

And that’s in an ideal e-waste recycling world.

Or, as one source points out,

“[T]he range of different electronics makes dealing with “e-waste” as a single stream highly problematic, since recycling a fridge is very different f

rom recycling a smartphone. Further still, even individual electronic products are often made of mixed materials such as plastic, metal, and glass. This poses a problem for recyclers, as separating these materials is difficult, costly, and time-consuming, especially compared to single-material products like cans and glass bottles.”

Fortunately, by partnering with a professional junk removal company like Junk King Fairfax, all your e-waste disposal issues can be handled easily and affordably. And you can rest assured that it will also be done through a genuinely green process since Junk King is a major proponent of recycling e-waste and recycling in general.

How to Downsize and Get Rid of Extra Junk Without Financially Straining Yourself

When you decide to downsize your living situation, getting rid of all the junk you’ve been holding onto can be just as difficult as the act of moving itself. If you’re trying to avoid financial strain while also avoiding hefty fees from trash removal companies, there are ways to get rid of all your extra junk without spending too much money. Here are some tips on how to downsize your living situation and get rid of extra junk without financially straining yourself.

Determine Which Items Are EssentialDetermine Which Items Are Essential

The first step in downsizing your living situation is knowing which items are truly essential to your everyday life. The trick is to remember, essential doesn’t mean, would be nice to have. Things like extra dishes, clothes, and electronic devices are obviously important—but they may not be worth lugging everything across town if it means you can’t afford that sweet new apartment. Also, think about what you’ll need on a day-to-day basis in your new place; will you need furniture? Do you have any old appliances that could be donated or recycled? Will you want a mattress for guests? If so, then it’s important to look into mattress removal services before selling yours. You want to get rid of everything possible—and only take what’s essential.

Purge Items You Don’t Use On A Regular Basis

Before you sell anything, it’s important to organize your unwanted items so you can find them easily. When you’re downsizing your living situation, it might be tempting to get rid of anything and everything—but that could be a costly mistake. You might want junk removal assistance if any of these apply: too much junk, delicate or valuable items, or hard-to-reach locations.

Hiring a company like Junk King can help give you peace of mind while they remove old furniture or other things that aren’t serving a purpose in your life anymore. Before they get rid of your stuff, they’ll even let you keep items that hold sentimental value so you don’t lose sight of why these things were important, to begin with.

Sell Stuff That You Do Not Want To Take With YouSell Stuff That You Do Not Want To Take With You

When you’re downsizing, it’s important to let go of things that you just don’t need. Have a garage sale or look for a storage unit so that you can get rid of your stuff. Most cities have listings for cheap storage units available near where you live, so you should be able to find one reasonably easily. Make sure you take pictures of what you’re selling and post them on Craigslist or another online selling site before showing up with your stuff at a garage sale. That way, people will know what they are getting themselves into when they buy something from your sale! You can also look into using Facebook Marketplace to try and sell some of the larger, bulkier items.

Get Rid of Old Appliances and Furniture

Getting rid of old appliances or furniture can be easy—or hard, depending on what you have. If you’re trying to make extra cash, it may not be worth your time; instead, donate them (or drop them off at a charity) if they’re in decent shape. Or, if you plan on moving out soon and don’t want to lug your stuff around with you (good thinking), a junk removal service might make more sense. Whether you remove items yourself or hire someone else to do it for you depends on what kind of space limitations you have. For example, if your new residence is furnished with new appliances, saving your old refrigerator, washer, and dryer may cause you to rent a larger storage unit than you intended to. Over an extended period of time, these small additional costs will begin to add up.

Instead of holding onto these appliances, try to sell them or donate them if you can. If none of those options are feasible for you or you’re under a time crunch, you can always contact Junk King Fairfax for help. The appliance removal services they offer not only ensure that your old appliances are picked up in a timely fashion, but they will recycle as much of the appliances as possible to minimize the amount of waste that goes into our local landfills.

Donate What Isn’t Worth Selling

Before you start selling your extra junk, consider donating it. Some charities will even come pick up your donations, making it easier than ever to get rid of all those things you don’t need anymore. Many charities accept clothing, household items, and books – just be sure that you find a charity that’s right for you. To find local charitable organizations near you, try searching Google Maps using keywords like charity or donation center. Or check out Charity Navigator to find trustworthy nonprofits in your area (and on your doorstep).

There are also a number of popular mobile apps that allow you to quickly search for nearby non-profits in need. Just type donate into your app store and see what comes up. Be sure to call ahead to make sure they accept donations of furniture or other large items before driving across town! Donating is not only good for you financially but is great for your community as well. After donating, reward yourself with a nice dinner out!

In Fairfax County, Recycling Is A Priority When It Comes To Junk Removal

Recycling Fairfax

Fairfax County is somewhat unique in a number of ways in addition to simply being a great place to live.

With an estimated 1,150,000-plus residents within the county borders, it is the most populous jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with around 13 percent of the population. And that population was the first in the United States to reach a six-figure median household income.

While it is mostly suburban in nature, Fairfax County is much more than suburbs and shopping centers. It’s also the home to the Central Intelligence Agency, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, National Reconnaissance Office, and National Counterterrorism Center, as well as the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

But, most importantly, Fairfax County is home to over a million Virginians who love their corner of the country.

That includes communities such as Fairfax Station, Chantilly, Annandale, Lorton, Tysons, and many others. And all these communities have a few things in common in addition to being in Virginia, and one of those is that, in Fairfax County, Recycling is taken quite seriously.

Which is why Junk King Fairfax specializes in bulk recycling and recyclable junk removal.

Junk King Fairfax and Why Recycling Matters

Junk King has always made recycling a priority.

In fact, when Junk King was first founded back in 2005, we were the nation’s first green and recycling-based junk removal company. And that hasn’t changed after all these years! In fact, we still recycle most of the material we pick-up. In fact, we work hard to recycle as much as 60 percent or more of everything we pick up each day, including plastic, glass, and scrap metal.

This is just one of the ways we continue to demonstrate our commitment to being the premier eco-friendly junk removal service in America.

And we understand that, while most of our Fairfax County neighbors can manage much of their own recycling, there are also times when the sheer volume of recyclable waste or junk material is more than the average homeowner or renter can, or wants, to manage.

In addition to assisting our residential friends and neighbors with their bulk recycling needs, Junk King Fairfax is able to do the same for all of our local businesses and other organizations.

We’ve said it already, but it warrants repeating: Recycling matters.

How? Well, consider these statistics from ComfyLiving.net :

  • On average, every American produces 1,609 pounds of garbage every year.
  • In 2018, 69.1 million tons of municipal solid waste were recycled in the US.
  • Americans throw away 20 billion disposable diapers every year.
  • Sweden dumps only 1% of trash in landfills.
  • On the global level, we produce 2.12 billion tons of waste every year.
  • China produces the largest amount of plastic packaging waste in the world.
  • About 68% of paper and paperboard was recycled in 2018.
  • 91% of plastic waste hasn’t been recycled.
  • Approximately 3 million tons of glass containers were recycled in the US in 2017.
  • The recycling industry creates more jobs than the solid waste management industry.

Fairfax County Recycling Matters, Too

Recycling Metal from Junk

Americans throw away enough aluminum in three months to rebuild all of our commercial airplanes. The energy saved by recycling one aluminum can could run a television for three hours. The energy saved by recycling a year supply of steel cans can power a city the size of Washington DC for 10 years. You can recycle the small stuff—cans and such—through the county services. Northern Virginia and Montgomery Md have good programs for recycling.

For the big items, you may need a junk removal company. Junk King is, by far, the greenest.
In 2012, Junk King Fairfax recycled, repurposed, and donated everything we hauled—more than 950 tons. We met our goal of being 100% landfill free.

We recycled more than 150 tons of metal. We take metal items that other hauler will not take, such as propane tanks. We are one of the few haulers that has a warehouse where we can adequately sort the debris.

Disposing Latex Paint

Latex paint is not a hazardous material; it is a ceramic. Oil based paint is indeed hazardous waste.

If you need to get rid old latex paint, follow these simple steps:
1. Remove the lid and place can in a safe, well-ventilated area.
2. Allow a few days to let the latex dry to ceramic form.
3. Put lids and cans of dried latex into a plastic trash bag along with your regular household trash.

For a faster drying—as fast as 30 minutes–you can use waste paint hardener is available at paint stores and most area hardware stores. Mulch, kitty litter, or shredded paper may also be used as a drying agent.

Some counties limit the number of cans you may dispose for each pick-up. Most counties request that you put the trash bags in rigid trashcans. Contact your county or trash hauler for more details.

Usually, the paint can you put into your trash gets recycled. The can is incinerated where the dried paint burns off of the metal can. The facility recovers the remaining steel from the ash and collects the steel for recycling.

Also, county residents can take paint to their county disposal sites:

Alexandria: 3224 Colvin Street, Alexandria, VA

Arlington: 3155 South Fern Street Arlington, VA‎  22202

Fairfax: 4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030

If you have oil-based paints or lots of latex paint, call us at Junk King and we’ll put you in touch with our partner Yuk Old Paint, who will help you properly dispose of the paint.

Being Green Can Be Economical

When people see the word ‘green’ advertised for a service, they often think it is going to cost them more than a service that is not eco-friendly.

They know that some businesses charge a premium for ‘green.’ From organic food markets to eco-friendly products, brand prices are often marked up because they are ‘green.’

Junk King is different. We provide the greenest junk removal service at prices 30% below our major competitors. We are 100% landfill free because we have a warehouse where we sort materials for proper disposal and we have a network of end-users of everything we haul. Even the trash we collect goes to an incinerator that uses the biomass to generate electricity to power 75,000 homes in Fairfax.

The great majority of junk haulers do not have a place to sort debris so they pay the $50 to $80 per ton at the dumps. By using our warehouse and labor to sort, donate, repurpose, and recycle, we save more on the dumping fees than we pay the labor to sort.

By working smarter, we can give our customers in Northern Virginia the best of both worlds – affordable and green services.

Picking a Junk Removal Company – What to ask.

You might ask, “What’s the big deal? They’re just hauling away my junk, so I’ll just go with the lowest price.” Make sure you are getting real value. Like most home service providers, you have great performers and the not so great.
First, you need to remember that a full-service junk removal company is not like the trash company. The trash company does not come onto your property or into your house. You, in effect, deliver the garbage to the curb where the trash company collects it. Liability to the homeowner is practically zero.
Not so for junk removal. Because junk removal companies come onto your property, you want to know that they are properly insured and licensed. The same is true if you hire a tree removal service.
When considering a junk removal company, here are some questions you might ask.
What is your physical address? If the company has leased commercial space, you know that some landlord has checked their suitability.
What kind of trucks and how many do you have? If the company has multiple trucks designed specifically for junk removal, then most likely a truck dealer and financing company has checked the company for suitability.
What do you do with the junk and debris you haul away? The company ought to be able to give specifics: Lorton Covanta, Ox Road Transfer Station. . . . Last September, I saw a fly-by-night junk hauler at 5 a.m. emptying the contents of his pick-up truck into a dumpster at a condominium complex. Dumping costs run about 10% of the total job costs for an efficient company with commercial permits. By the way, if the company does not have a warehouse, they are limited in how much they can donate and recycle.

What kind of insurance do you have? The owner ought to know that he needs vehicle insurance, workers’ compensation insurance, general liability insurance, and cargo insurance to fully protect the customer. The cost of this insurance can run up to $1,000 per month for each truck and crew. Small, undercapitalized junk removal companies often skimp on these important protections. They may pass the savings to the customer, but they pass along much of the risk, too.

When you look at on-line reviews, consider whether the site ensures that the reviews are from actual customers. Sites such as Angie’s List and Service Magic have reliable reviews.

Do-it-yourself Junk Hauling?

By nature, I’m a Do-it-yourselfer. But I’m also busy, so now I pick my Do-it-yourself battles more carefully.

Here’s a short case study comparing Do-it-yourself junk removal and Junk King. The bottom line is that if you have access to a free truck and you value your time at zero, the Do-it-yourself option is best. If you don’t have a truck, and you value your time at greater than $13 per hour, then the Junk King option is best.

Case Study
You are a homeowner in Falls Church and you want to get rid of an old couch, a mattress set, a few boxes of old papers, a broken lawnmower, old grill, an old TV and a stack of used ceramic tile from a left-over bathroom demo. The volume would fit in two pick-up trucks or a small stake-body truck.

Do-it-yourself Option
First, you need to rent a small truck: best case is $89 per day without insurance. You need to budget at least five hours to get the truck, return to your house, load the truck, drive it to the dump, unload the truck, and return it.
You need to return the truck with a full tank of gas. Trucks get about 12 miles per gallon. You need to budget for 6 gallons of fuel at $4 or another $24.
Pay the dump fees. The best value for the homeowner is to go to the Fairfax County Ox Road Transfer Station or the Lorton Covanta Facility. Typically, a county employee will check your load and assess a fee.  County residents get a break, but dumping is not free. In your case, you have mixed debris, which means you have some burnable debris, some steel, some e-waste, and some construction debris. Most likely, you are going to pay about $10 each for the mattress and box springs, $15 or more for the TV because of the lead content, and $15 for the rest: total $50.
After you pay the dump fees, the county employee will direct you to unload your truck at different piles. the mattresses go in the mattress pile, grill and lawnmower (drained of gas and oil) goes to the steel, tile goes to the construction debris. The burnable debris goes to another pile.
Consider the value of your time and your helper’s time. You will need help to load and unload the bulky items. The average wage in Fairfax County is $28/hour (census data). If time is worth $28 per hour, you need to budget another $280.
Beware of hidden costs. In the unlikely event that something goes wrong, the Do-it-yourselfer has the risk: injury, accident, property damage . . . For example, carriers who haul stuff pay for cargo insurance in addition to auto insurance in case something falls out of their vehicle and causes damage. Typical auto insurance doesn’t cover that kind of accident.

Therefore, the Do-it-Yourself option has the following costs:

  • Truck rental  $89
  • Fuel   $24
  • Dump fees  $50
  • Labor  $280

The total Do-it-yourself is $443 plus some hidden costs.

If you can borrow your brother’s pick-up truck and you value labor at zero, you still have the fuel and dump fees at $64, plus the hidden costs of the risk. You’ll need to make two round-trips to the dump, so your time budget goes up to 8 hours.
Junk King Option
The second option is to call a junk hauler like Junk King. The load described above is about one-third a truck load for our large 18 cubic yard trucks. Junk King’s retail cost for a third truck is $328, but most consumers use a $20 coupon from the yellow pages or book on-line for a $30 discount. Therefore, one can comfortably budget $298 with no hidden costs. Junk King provides free estimates and promises to beat any written estimate by 10%.
Other benefits include avoiding the hidden costs of the Do-it-yourself option. Junk King performs all the labor and has workers compensation, general liability, auto insurance, cargo insurance, and necessary dumping permits. Also, Junk King has a network of recyclers.  They stage the unwanted items at our warehouse, donating re-usable items, and then recycling steel and paper. Junk King even has an end-user for the old bathroom tile in the scenario above.  Therefore, Junk King is better than 95% landfill free.  If you tried to replicate their recycling process, you would have to make separate trips to six far-flung facilities and spend time conducting six separate transactions—simply not practical for the Do-it-yourselfer.

Conclusion

If you do not have a truck, if you value your time at more than $13 per hour, and if you would rather keep your junk and debris out of landfills, then you want to call Junk King Fairfax.  (703) 455-3861

Green Report Card — Zero Land Fill for December and January!

Junk King Fairfax makes the extra effort to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills. In December and January, we were 100% landfill free.

Since June, our metal recycling alone has saved 91,557 pounds of iron ore, 4,394 pounds of limestone, and 51,272 pounds of coal, which generates about one KWH per pound. We delivered 317,336 pounds of biomass to burn for energy, creating more than 512,795 KWHs.

To put these energy contributions in context, a typical Fairfax County home uses 17,000 KWHs of electricity per year. Since June 15, we have contributed enough energy savings to power 33 typical Fairfax homes for a year.

Also, we’ve donated furniture and usable appliances to Habitat for Humanity and needy families.

So far, we’ve collected more than 200 tons of mass and we’ve put less 9 tons into landfills. We recycled more that 191 tons – or 95.5% of all the waste we collected.

We are committed to do even better.

Junk King Fairfax’s Green Report Card

Junk King’s Green Contribution — June 15 to October 31, 2010

Since we began operations June 15, our recycling efforts have saved the following resources:

Our paper recycling saved 19,845 gallons of water, 65 trees, and 11,340 KWHs of electricity. In addition, we kept 171 pounds of pollutants from the atmosphere.

Our metal recycling saved more than 62,250 pounds of iron ore, 2,988 pounds of limestone, and 34,860 pounds of coal. The coal generates about one KWH per pound.

We delivered 154,093 pounds of biomass to burn for energy, creating more than 249,000 KWHs.

To put these energy contributions in context, a typical Fairfax County home uses 17,000 KWHs of electricity per year. Since June 15, we have contributed enough energy savings to power 17 typical Fairfax homes for a year.

In addition, we recycled 3,685 pounds of e-waste to include 55 old TVs, keeping approximately 200 pounds of lead out of the ecosystem.

Finally, we did have 16,143 pounds of construction debris and 9,839 pounds of yard debris that went into the landfill. Therefore, our total mass collected was 238,737 pounds. We recycled 213,245 pounds – or 89% of the waste we collected.
