Ways To Make A New Roommate Feel Welcome

Once you go through the screening process and found what you think to be your next new roommate, there are some steps to take to make them feel welcome once they move in. This is all about getting off in the right foot and setting up a positive living environment. Here’s what you can do:

Find Ways To Share In The Kitchen

Living with someone means sharing but that doesn’t mean you have to share everything. However, you could share some common things with your roommate. For instance, there are some grocery items that you’ll both be using like toilet paper, paper towel, coffee, milk, etc. You can either go grocery shopping together and split the cost for those common items or take turns buying them.

You should also plan for that first night to have a nice dinner for your roommate. Yes, take out counts! The more you get to know each other the more you’ll find out about your likes and dislikes with regard to food. You could take turns making meals or cook them together.

Schedule Bathroom Time

Scheduling bathroom time is only an issue if you are both sharing one bathroom and leaving for work at the same time. It is important that you both get equal time in the morning or as much time as you both need. Establishing this rule early on will make sure there is no conflict down the road.

Be Open With The DVR

Now that you have a roommate, it means you’ll be sharing some of your DVR a space as well. They may not want to record a favorite show that you have no interest in watching but that doesn’t mean you get to go in and delete their shows. This might mean you get to binge watch some of your programming but that’s not such a bad thing!

Clear Closet And Cabinet Space

Ideally, a new roommate will be moving into a spare room that is completely empty. That room should have their own empty closet as well. However, there might be common areas with a shared closet that you could share with the roommate. The same could be said for kitchen cabinets. If you have a storage unit, then you might want to free up half the space in there as well. All of this clutter removal can be helped with one call to Junk King Fort Lauderdale. They’ll send over a pair of movers and a truck big enough to hold whatever it is you want to get rid of. All you have to do is point to the things you want taken away and the team from Junk King will handle the rest.

Getting along with your roommate is easy if you’re willing to share from the start.
