DIY Projects and Junk King: A Perfect Combination

Working on a DIY remodel or renovation? These projects can be a great way to add some value to your home or make it function in a way that works better for you. However, they’re also a lot of work, and they can easily spiral out of control. Before you know it, you may find yourself doing more work and spending a lot more money than you had originally planned.

If you’ve never done a remodel on your own before, it helps to understand the process first. Knowing what you’re in for is a good way of judging whether or not you really want to take on a DIY renovation. Many people think they fully understand what their project will entail, but they realize they didn’t take into account things such as the debris. DIY remodels can leave behind a lot of trash that you have to do something with.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as putting this trash into your city trash bin. Instead, you will need to look for other solutions, such as reaching out to Junk King Irving. We can help you with all of the debris from your DIY project plus more. But before we look into what Junk King can do for you, let’s take a look at a few tips that will make your project easier.

Plan First

It may be tempting to get in there and start swinging a hammer, especially if you hate your kitchen layout or are sick of looking at that dingy tile in your shower. However, if you run into demolition without making a plan, you may find yourself with nothing but a lot of trash and some holes in the wall. It’s a good way to quickly ruin your home.

That’s why having a plan first is important. You will want to sit down and list out everything you want to do in the project. For example, if you’re renovating your bathroom, you may want to put in new flooring, replace the vanity and toilet, and update the shower surround and tile. If you have this on your list, you can start to plan out what you need and budget for it. Once you start the project, though, you might decide on putting in a new light fixture, painting the ceiling, or even changing out the window. Those are additional costs that you may not have budgeted for. Think through everything you want to do before you start.

Also, don’t forget to set aside some of your budget for emergencies. Professionals call this the contingency budget, and it’s there to absorb any costs you didn’t account for. Typically, it’s about ten percent of your total budget, although setting aside twenty isn’t a bad idea if you can do it. That way, you have some extra money in case you find that your bathroom needs all-new plumbing or that you have to rewrite things.

Be sure to find out what permits and inspections you need to have done, too, and don’t skip out on them. The city regulations that revolve around permits are important and are there to make certain your home is safe. If you don’t do a remodel according to the rules, things may be done incorrectly. This can lead to electrical fires, leaks, or other major issues. If you ever go to sell, unpermitted additions can make the process much more difficult.

You May Have More Trash than You Expect

When it comes to debris from your DIY project, you may have more than you think. Many people think that all the trash they will have to deal with comes from the demolition phase of the project. They rip out the old counters, take down cabinets, and remove the old flooring.

However, while that is a large amount of debris, it may not be everything. Calling Junk King right after you complete demolition can be a good idea, but you may actually need us to come back later on in the project. That’s because you may have packaging, remnants of material, and even other demolished stuff to have us haul away. Many materials such as flooring and cabinets do have packaging that you’ll need to get rid of, plus there’s always the risk that you may have to open up an additional wall or other area. In the end, you may have a lot more trash than expected.

Schedule Everything

You don’t want to schedule your trash pickup just to realize that you won’t be ready. That can happen, especially if you are trying to do the entire project yourself or are doing the work around your job. Since a large amount of debris will be created during the demo process, it’s not a bad idea to try to nail down the schedule.

This means a few things for your overall plan. First, you’ll want to have a definite start date for your project. You might already have an end-date, such as a holiday or other event, that you need your project completed by. During the planning phase, this translates into picking materials that are in-stock or that can be shipped with plenty of time to spare. You should also have backup materials. This way, you can quickly pivot to a material that’s available if your first choice is out of stock and can’t be shipped to you in time.

Another thing you’ll want to make certain is scheduled is your help. Demo with a single person can be difficult since some of the debris is going to be heavy or awkwardly sized. Having at least one other person there to help will make it go faster. You want to make certain these people know when they need to come help you and can commit to that schedule. You also need to commit to the plan.

Finally, think about when you need to schedule us. The first day of demo is probably not the best time for Junk King to swing by your home simply because you may not be done with everything. Have us come on the day you expect to be done with demolition or even the next day. That way, you have a little bit of extra time just in case you end up running behind schedule.

What Junk King Can Do for You

When you schedule your junk pickup with Junk King Irving, you’re doing more than just scheduling a large truck to come by. Our crew will actually haul everything out of your home or yard and load it up. This means you can continue working on your project while we get rid of all the trash for you. In addition to taking the construction debris, we can also haul away any old furniture, damaged appliances, and other trash you have. The only thing we’re not able to take is hazardous waste.

In order to help you budget better, we will provide you with a free, no-obligation quote when you call or text us to schedule your appointment. Due to the nature of construction debris, this quote may not be as accurate as quotes for specific pieces of furniture, but it will be a good ballpark figure. When we arrive, we will provide you with a new quote based on the debris you do have. This quote will include all fees and other costs—we believe in full transparency and do not tack on any extra charges at the end.

What Happens to the Debris?

Typically, we do try to donate as much of what we pick up as we can. If you have furniture or other items that are still usable, they will be donated to a local organization that needs them. With debris, donation isn’t always possible, though we may be able to donate old fixtures, appliances, or even cabinets that are still in good condition. However, we will sort through everything and recycle as much of it as we can. We believe in protecting the environment, and in our case, that means redirecting as much as possible away from the landfill.
