Junk Removal in Beverly Hills: How to do your part to Divert Waste from the Landfill

Beverly Hills is synonymous with wealth, luxury, and fame. As of July of this year, the average selling price for a home in Beverly Hills was a casual $5.6 million, according to Realtor.com. With dozens of A-list celebrities calling Beverly Hills their home, it shouldn´t come as a surprise that the city also boasts two of the wealthiest streets in America: Beverly Park Circle, and Beverly Park Terrace with the average home price well over $15 million.

Despite the huge custom estates, luxurious shopping, and massive influx of tourists, however, the City of Beverly Hills is also renowned for having an extremely low waste footprint. Whereas the State of California is demanding all cities to move towards a 50 percent diversion rate for waste being sent to landfills, Beverly Hills is on track to divert at least 60 percent of their city´s waste.

In this short article, we take a look at some of the ways individuals, homeowners, business owners, and other residents of the City of Beverly Hills can do their part to help reduce even further the amount of waste that is sent to our local landfills systems.  We also explain why Junk King of Los Angeles is the best option to help individuals, homeowners, and businesses in Los Angeles get rid of their junk in the most efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly manner.

What is a Waste Diversion Rate and Why is it Important?

When the State of California talks about increasing the waste diversion rate, what exactly does that mean? Waste diversion rates take into consideration the amount of trash, junk, and other waste items that are diverted from landfills and incinerators through three principle strategies: Reducing the amount of waste, reusing trash items before sending them to the local landfill or incinerator, and recycling items that can be recycled.

Let’s take a deeper look at three strategies for waste diversion:

  • Recycling: In the recent past, the main emphasis for waste diversion was centered on the importance of recycling. This emphasis helped to establish different recycling technologies and industries, while also creating markets for recycled materials. In more recent years, however, China´s ban on receiving recyclable materials from the United States (mostly plastics) has thrown the recycling industry into turmoil. In 2018, China’s imports of recyclable plastics decreased to 51,605 tons from 5.8 million tons in 2017. A year after the ban, China’s imports decreased further to 924 tons—a 98.2 percent decline. However, separating certain items for waste like paper, plastic, and metal so that they may be processed into material for new products, is still an extremely important aspect of waste diversion.

  • Reducing: There are several different actions that can be taken to reduce the amount of waste we send out to the curb every month. Avoiding single use plastic bags, using silverware instead of plastic utensils, and choosing to compost your organic wastes are all important ways to reduce the amount of waste we create. To put this into perspective, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that more food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material in our everyday trash, constituting 22 percent of municipal solid waste.

  • Reusing: Lastly, reusing individual products in a different ways is another strategy to increase our total waste diversion rate. Instead of throwing away those old tires, turning it into a backyard swing is one example of how to reuse, or up-cycle, waste items in order to keep them out of the landfill.
