What About Appliances that Contain Chemicals?
Freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners, and similar appliances contain Freon and other solvents. These chemicals can be very dangerous to the environment and to people. This is why it’s not a good idea to leave old appliances out on the curb. If the chemicals were to leak out, they can create a health hazard.
When we pick up any broken or damaged appliance that contains chemicals, we first take it to a professional who knows how to remove the solvents in a safe manner. Once that’s done, the appliance can be recycled or, if necessary, disposed of. For appliances we are donating, we will ask if there have been any chemical leaks and do a visual inspection ourselves before taking it to the donation center.
Other Safety Concerns
No matter what will be done with your old appliance, there are a few things you should do to ensure that the appliance is safe to handle. First, unplug the appliance. Appliances such as refrigerators run constantly, and they need time to cool down before they can be properly handled.
Second, you should tape the doors closed with masking tape. Our teams generally have tape on hand to secure doors, but you may want to do this anyway to make certain no one can get trapped inside the old appliance.
Always be careful when moving heavy appliances. You can easily hurt yourself. Our team will have a dolly to ensure that we can safely remove the items. If you need to move the appliance to the garage or even outside, do so carefully. Use a dolly if possible. If not, have several people work together. One person should never try to lift an appliance on their own.
