How Junk King’s Dumpster Rental Services Contribute to a Greener Tomorrow

Dumpster RentalJunk King Minneapolis Uses New Mini Dumpster to Help Make Way for a Cleaner and Greener Tomorrow

The largest of the Twin Cities, Minneapolis, MN, located in Hennepin County, is a water rich city bisected by the Mississippi River. The territory that is now Minneapolis is thought to have first inhabited by the Dakota Indians before being settled by the French. The land then passed from the hands of the French, to the Spanish and then back to the French before it was eventually negotiated to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

Despite being known for its infamously frigid climate, Minneapolis actually has very warm summers. The park ridden city has over 160 parks and is a haven for outdoor cycling as the city has uniquely paved roads exclusive to cyclers and bike share program that is widely used among both residents and tourists.

According to The Star Tribune,  the Copenhagenize Design Co., a Danish design firm that annually publishes a worldwide index of bike-friendly cities, has ranked Minneapolis near the top of the list worldwide. The article states that “Minneapolis is No. 18 on the list, which is led by Copenhagen, Denmark, and two Dutch cities: Amsterdam and Utrecht. The only other North American city to make the top 20 is Montreal at No. 20.”

Minneapolis is also widely recognized as the backdrop to the 1970’s classic show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and was once home to classic author F. Scott Fitzgerald and was home to music legend, Prince.

Employment and Education

Manufacturing industries make up most of the economic base in Minneapolis. Electronics, fod and dairy products, supercomputers, structural steel, thermostatic controls, farm machinery and so many other items make up a long list of goods produced in the largest of the Twin Cities.

Minneapolis is a well-educated city. In 2015 USA Today ranked Minneapolis in the number one spot as the Most Literate City according to its annual study. A low cost of living and high employment rate makes Minneapolis a great place to live and play.

Did you know?

According to city-data.com, 24.3 percent of people over 25 years old have four or more years of college under their belt.

 Philanthropy

According to Wikipedia, more than 40 percent of residents in Minneapolis make it a priority to volunteer time. This is the highest percentage of any metropolitan area in the United States.

Green Living in Minneapolis

Minneapolis’ green initiative focuses highly on reducing the amount of stormwater runoff that finds its way into the lakes, rivers, wetlands and creeks that surround the city. The initiative encourages residents to seek the use of green roofs, tree planting, rain gardens, rain barrels, and pervious pavements, most of which are geared towards keeping the natural waters clean.

Recycling in Minneapolis

The city’s curbside recycling program began as a monthly service in 1982 but as the years went on, recycling participation increased and the city was able to increase the frequency of pick-ups to twice per week. Recycling efforts in Minneapolis include the newly founded Organics recycling program. The program, which residents must sign up for, helps to make waste reduction simple. Once opted into the program, fruits, vegetables, bones, meat, breads, eggshells, non-recyclable and food-soiled paper, and more are collected for composting.

According to minneapolismn.gov, as of Monday May 15, 2017, 42%, of Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling customers (44,900 households) have signed up to participate.

Minneapolis is cited to have recycled 29,560.06 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in 2016, which is up almost 10,000 tons from 2011. The city is making great strides towards its recycling and sustainability goals. Minneapolis has also enacted a Clean City program which is run through the City of Minneapolis’ Division of Solid Waste and Recycling. The program offers residents of the park-friendly city various ways to get involved, including, highway/street adoption, block adoption, maintaining one or more litter containers, adopting ash receptacles aimed at keeping cigarette litter away, and more. With so many opportunities to pitch in, Minneapolis’ residents have ample opportunity to help ensure the sustainability and beauty of their own city.

According to City of Minneapolis Dual Sort/Single Sort Collection Study, the official hierarchy of waste management for Hennepin County, where Minneapolis is located is as follows:

·      Waste reduction and reuse,

·      Waste recycling,

·      Composting of yard waste and food waste,

·      Resource recovery through mixed municipal solid waste composting or incineration,

·      Land disposal which produces no measurable methane gas or which involves the retrieval of methane gas as a fuel for the production of energy to be used on-site or for sale,

·      Land disposal that produces measurable methane and which does not involve the retrieval of methane gas as a fuel for the production of energy to be used on-site for sale.

Minneapolis Landfill Solutions

Minneapolis appears to have had several landfill issues with some even resulting in lawsuits as recent as May 2017. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) enacted a voluntary program in 1994 called the Closed Landfill Program (CLP) whose sole purpose is to monitor and maintain closed municipal sanitary landfills. The MPCA currently monitors 109 landfills in Minnesota. Only two landfills currently appear to be in operation in Minneapolis.
