If you want a terrific model of eco-friendly practices look no further than the University of California Santa Cruz. The California Higher Education Sustainability Conference plans to honor the the UCSC campus next month with a 2013 Best Practice Award for improving energy efficiency at the Earth and Marine Sciences building on campus. Here’s what they did to earn this special honor: “Installed a new web-based energy management system, and fine-tuned the operation of the building through a process known as commissioning, helped staff reduce the building’s annual electricity use by 14 percent and its natural gas consumption by 20.5 percent. Those savings reduced the building’s carbon footprint by more than 300 metric tons per year, and saved enough money so that the project could pay for itself in three years.”
UCSC campus energy manager Patrick Testoni has nothing but praise for the campus’s Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning team. “This project reflects the importance of using modern technology to improve building performance, resulting in increased comfort, and reduced carbon footprint,” Testoni said.
