Ready to have all of that junk hauled away? No one wants to have old appliances, furniture, and other garbage taking up space in their home. Before you give Junk King a call, you might wonder what you need to do to prepare for our visit. While there’s not a lot you need to do since we can handle everything, there are a few steps you might need to take. It all depends on what you need us to pick up.

Have You Identified Everything You Want Removed? 

We don’t want you to have us come out to pick up a few things only to realize later that you forgot to have us take something. If you only have a few items, you likely won’t forget anything. However, if you’re having us take items from a house you’ve inherited, a foreclosed property, or other home that has a lot of stuff in it, it can help to tag what you want us to take. You may also want to make a list. You may also need to go through everything in the home to determine what you want to keep first. This can take several days, so be sure you keep that in mind. It can sometimes be difficult to know what you want to keep, especially if many items have sentimental value. If you’re sorting through a smaller space, such as a garage, you may only need an afternoon.

If the things you want us to take are mixed in with stuff you’re keeping, you can put colored sticky notes on what you want us to haul off. This helps us know what we need to move out and makes it easier on you—you don’t need to follow us around pointing out what goes and what stays.

You can also move everything you want hauled off to one area, but that’s not necessary. We don’t mind handling heavy appliances and bulky furniture. Our teams know how to move these items out of a home effectively and safely and into our truck. If it’s more convenient for you to put them in the garage or other space, you can, but it’s not necessary.  

Know What We Will Take

Before you call Junk King, it’s a good idea to know what we will take. You may have more junk we could dispose of for you, but if you don’t know what we take, you might overlook it. While we take furniture and appliances, we also take yard debris, construction waste, old televisions, and electronic waste. We can get rid of your old hot tub, too. You don’t even have to break it down. We’ll even take old mattresses and box springs. In short, we can deal with anything as long as it doesn’t contain hazardous waste.

Do You Want to Try to Sell Anything?

Once you have determined what you want to get rid of, ask yourself if it’s all truly junk. You might have a few items that are still in good condition that you want to try selling or giving away. If you have anything that belonged to your parents, grandparents, or other relatives, you may want to ask your siblings or other family members if they want it.

You can also consider donating gently used items and working appliances. However, Junk King will actually donate anything we collect that is still usable, so you don’t have to worry about taking any of these items to a donation center. We sort through everything we pick up and donate whatever we can. We always appreciate it when our customers do mention that an appliance still works or that a piece of furniture is still in usable condition, but you don’t have to. We will sort out what is still usable and what can be recycled when we collect the junk.

Clean Things Out

If you want us to haul off old cabinets, tool chests, playhouses, refrigerators, or anything else that might have something stored in it, take a quick look inside. You don’t want to accidentally leave anything valuable inside these old cabinets or other items. This also helps ensure that it’s safe to move these items. While we will often tape doors shut to make sure they don’t fly open, that could still occur if there’s something heavy inside that gets flung up against the door.

Note that there’s no need to clean the items you want us to take. If the appliances work or the furniture is in good condition and you want us to donate them, you can clean them up if you want, but it’s not necessary.

If you’re dealing with a foreclosure home or a rental that the previous tenants have abandoned, you may have quite a lot of stuff to sort through. In this case, it may actually be easier to move out or tag the items you do want to keep. Either way, just let us know when we arrive. We will follow whatever directions you give us.

Do All the Needed Yardwork

Are you calling us to come pick up your yard debris? If so, you’ll want to have all of the yardwork done ahead of time so we can get everything at once. This means you’ll need to plan out what you need to do and give yourself enough time to get it all done.

If you’re just trimming some trees, you may only need an afternoon. However, you do want to make sure you have the necessary tools on hand before you start. Does your chainsaw have fuel? Are your trimmers and other manual tools sharpened and ready to go? Do you have a ladder that’s tall enough? If you don’t, it can push your plans back. If you’ve already called to make an appointment with us, you may have to give us another call to reschedule.

Having your yard debris removed gets more complicated if you’re rebuilding a shed or a fence. You may not want to go without a fence, so you may need to tear down the old fence and build the new one at the same time. You will have to work around the debris, make sure you have everything you need to build the new fence, and devote a lot more time to the project. Fortunately, just like with junk inside the house, you can leave this debris wherever is convenient for you. We’ll pick it up no matter where it is.

Complete Your DIY Projects

Similarly, when you have a DIY project or remodel that will leave you with a lot of debris, you should try to complete it before you call us. Otherwise, we will pick up half of the debris and then have to come back later to get whatever debris comes from the rest of the project.

If you’re doing a major project such as renovating your kitchen or bathroom, you may need to find a place to put all of the debris. You may have old cabinets, sinks, bathtubs, and other large items to trash. You may be able to put them in the garage, but then that takes up space there. You may not be able to park your cars in the garage if you do this.

Unlike yard work, sometimes it does take several days or longer to complete a DIY remodel project. This is one case where having Junk King come pick up all of the debris may actually not be your best option. Instead, you may want to rent a dumpster from us. This allows you to throw away debris as you make it, so there’s no need to pile it up anywhere. Our dumpster rentals can be done for three, five, or seven days. We deliver the dumpster on the day you need it, and you can call us to come pick it up at any time. If you determine you need it for longer than you thought, give us a call.
