The only good thing that can be said about a hurricane is that they are never a surprise. Unlike the tornadoes that plague the Midwest, a hurricane takes days to build up strength. Leaving the Home
If an evacuation order seems eminent, then there is a lot you should do to prepare your home. If you have a second floor, then anything valuable on the first floor should be moved upstairs. Windows should be shuttered or covered with plywood. It is hard to imagine any homeowner along the Florida coast that doesn’t already have precut covers for their windows.
Around the yard, you want to make sure that anything that isn’t properly secured is stowed away. The includes everything from a BBQ grill to potted plants. They can all be weaponized in a hurricane. Packing Up
You should have a lockbox that can contain all your valuable documents especially your insurance policy. If possible, you should scan all those documents and email them to yourself. You should also pack a few days’ worth of clothing and any supplies like diapers for an infant or medications for grownups. Jugs of water, non-perishable snacks/food, flashlights and a first-aid kit should also be a part of your “go kit.”
Before leaving, you might want to consider shutting the water valve and flipping off the electricity and gas. Above all else, make sure you tell your friends, family and neighbors where you intend to evacuate to.
When the storm is over and you return to your property, the cleanup effort can begin. Hopefully, any damage will be kept to a minimum.
