Tips For Decluttering Your Garage

Tips-for-decluttering-your-garage

Clutter can be found in any part of your house—closets, guest bedrooms, basements, yards, and home offices, to name a few.

But the garage, perhaps, is the most cluttered area in almost anyone’s home worldwide. It’s easy to dump things in the garage because it has a lot of space, and it keeps clutter out of sight.

In fact, here in the US, a study by the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) revealed that 50 percent of homeowners said their garage is the most disorganized part of their house.

Meanwhile, a survey by the US Department of Energy showed that more than half of the homeowners with two-car garages polled are not able to fully utilize that part of the house for car parking.

Because of clutter, one-fourth of these homeowners said can’t park a car inside while around a third said they only have room for one vehicle.

Let’s face it. We store things we think we’re still going to use in the future or dump our unwanted stuff in the garage. Postponing your garage clean-up leads to clutter accumulating over time, which makes it an overwhelming chore that you eventually forget altogether.

Decluttering maybe a daunting task, but it has to be done to be able to make space so you can use your garage the way it was meant to be used.

Here are some tips for decluttering and making space for your garage.

Prepare for the process

Make sure that you have prepared yourself mentally and physically before you start organizing your garage. It’s best that you dedicate a full weekend to declutter your garage so as not to get your cleaning and organizing process interrupted. You need to also have the right tools and supplies, such as heavy-duty trash bags, vacuum, and organizers for all the clutter.

Sort your clutter

Get all of the stuff out of your garage and put them all in your driveway. Go through all the clutter and divide the items into four separate categories: keep, donate, sell, or trash. Let go of the items you haven’t used in a year and try not to keep things you think you will still be

using someday. Instead, sell or donate these things, especially if they are still useable and in good condition.

Organize your garage

Now that clutter is out of your garage, prioritize the space that will be taken up by your car/s and use the remaining areas for the items you have decided to keep. You can group them by creating zones such as frequently used items (shopping bags, pet leashes, garden and cleaning supplies); seasonal items (holiday decorations, snow tires, beach chairs), tools (shovels, rakes, small devices), and car supplies. You can use shelving to take advantage of the vertical space of your garage and cabinets to stow away dangerous items like tools and chemicals.

Maintain tidiness

Now that you have a system for your stuff, you now have a clean and organized garage. Now, it is easier to clean. Just make sure to stick to it by making it a habit to purge clutter at least once a year.

What to do with the rest of the clutter?

After all the hard work, there’s no way they will be returning to your garage. You can hold a yard sale for items that still working and are still useable.
