San Antonio Recycling News

San Antonio has a 10 year recycling plan intended to significantly reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfills. One aspect of the plan is an organics recycling program. This was given a test run by the city’s Solid Waste Management Department and was proven to be a success. The idea is that residents will be given a third recycling cart which is meant strictly for organic waste such as food scraps, leaves or other natural debris. These organics will be collected by the city and then turned into compost. However, a city councilman is putting the brakes on moving forward asking for more study.

Councilman Carlton Soules asked for a “council consideration request”  for a comprehensive review of the plan. He isn’t opposed to organic recycling per se; he just feels that it might make better sense to encourage folks to do their own composting as opposed to adding expenses of providing carts for everyone. Mayor Julian Castro agreed to take up the request after the council adopts the annual budget.

For that pilot program, the city provided 30,000 green carts in four council districts. Everyone who got a cart seemed happy to comply. At issue is the scope of San Antonio’s plan. In 201 the city council approved a measure that set the goal at 60% recycling rate by the year 2020. Soules thinks that 40% is a more realistic approach. Now the council is dividing itself between those who want to push for the 60% or coast to the 40%. Obviously, this is an issue that is going to be at the heart of many future council meetings.

When it comes to recycling items that can’t fit into those carts, your best option would be to hire Junk King. Junk King is the local San Antonio based business who is already on board with the concept of recycling. In fact, their recycling rate is closer to 65%. That means that over 65% of all the junk they collect from area residents is diverted away from the landfills. This makes Junk King the perfect recycling partner for your needs.

When Junk King recycles they are doing so with the big stuff. Oversize items like mattresses, sofas, bed frames and kitchen appliances can all be repurposed and reused. The trick is making sure those items get to the right recycling center. Junk King makes drop-offs at those centers nearly every day. It’s part of the complete service provided by Junk King for everyone of their customers. Best of all, there is no extra charge for recycling. You’ll be paying for the amount of space your junk takes up in their truck. Nothing more, nothing less. When it comes to recycling the big stuff, Junk King is the only way to go.

Signs That It’s Time To Call In A San Antonio Junk Removal Specialist

There is a fine line between hoarding and collecting. Rachel Dealy, has turned her love of collecting into a thriving business called Collective. It’s become a great go-to spot in downtown San Antonio when you need that one-of-a-kind gift. The storefront was born out of Rachel’s love for rummage sales, estates sales, garage sales and thrift shops. After several years of bargain hunting, Rachel found herself surrounded by all she had acquired and decided to turn it loose onto the world.

“I had accumulated enough clothes and furniture and other stuff that I had to hold an estate sale before I could leave,” she told a local newspaper. “And even after that, I filled a U-Haul to come back to Texas. Whenever I walk into an antiques shop, I light up,” she says. “I get some sort of endorphin rush. I don’t hoard,” she says. “I acquire. I pick up things that I see value in. If it’s cool, I want it. If it’s a good price, I want it. If it’s a project that I could work on, I want it.”

She also shares the space of her store with a rotating roster of local artists who are offered the opportunity to sell their work on consignment. It’s a 3,000 square foot space just chock full of all kinds of objects. Now, there are some cynical types who would pass by a store like Collective and think, “It’s all junk.” But what might be junk to someone is a valued treasure to someone else. As with beauty, junk is in the eye of the beholder.

You might think that you could turn your junk into gold or at least some cash. There might be a way to do that but not without a lot of effort. A yard sale is always the good way to go. To pull that off you have to drag everything you want sold out to your front yard bright and early. Hopefully you spent the day before putting up posters otherwise how will anybody find out about your sale? At the end of the day whatever you haven’t sold you have to drag back in. You could leave it on your lawn and hope someone might take it but one night in the great outdoors and you’ve created trash.

Bottom line: if you’re committed to getting rid of your junk then just do it. Call in a junk specialist and get it over with. That junk specialist would be Junk King San Antonio. They are the professional movers based right here in San Antonio who make it their business to clean up your clutter. Whatever you want tossed out, they’ll load up on their truck and you can wave good-bye. Get real: your junk is just junk. Get it gone with Junk King San Antonio.

San Antonio Grill Disposal and Recycling

Given the choice, most folks would prefer their dinners grilled. Whether its steak, fish, chicken or ribs, cooking them on an outdoor BBQ is the best way to enjoy a wide range of flavors. You don’t have to travel far around San Antonio before you find a grill being fired up somewhere. Even if you’ve been grilling all your life, there are still probably some tips you might not even be aware of. Taking on any one of these helpful hints can completely change your grilling game.

Top of the list would be the advice not to grill cold meat. Yes, we’re being constantly warned not to leave meat out on a countertop because that’s where bacteria grows. That certainly holds true when it comes to thawing meat but not necessarily with meat that you’re bringing to room temperature. The challenge is heating a piece of meat from the center out. How many times have you cut into a steak to find it too undercooked in the center? Warming up that meat before it goes on the grill increases your opportunity for a more thorough cooking. Preheating is also essential to a good BBQ. You have to preheat your oven so why not preheat your grill? Always start grilling with at your perfect temperature for the meat you’re cooking.

There are many grillers who like to poke, prod and flip their food. This is only going to get in the way of locking in those amazing flavors. Sear first. This means setting your meat on the heat and letting it “flash brown.” Do this on both sides and around the edges (counts for chicken too!). Once your meat is sear, place it on your grate and let the heat work. In other words leave it alone for several minutes then flip. It doesn’t have to be that complicated.

You also want to avoid fueling your fire with fat. Sure it’s fun to see the flames flare up and hear that sizzle as fat or excess marinade drops down from your meat. However, what you’re doing with that flare up is causing char. That’s going to ruin your dinner in a snap. And just like cooking indoors, give your meat a chance to rest between the grill and the plate. Open another bottle of wine while your steak “settles down.”

Before any of this great grilling can begin you have to make sure you’ve got the best working BBQ. Leaving a grill outdoors year round means it’s going to take a beating. At some point, you have to surrender and buy a new grill. That’s a good thing! What else is a good thing is letting a team of professional junk haulers like Junk King San Antonio handle the task of old grill removal. They can load up your old grill and just about anything else you want to get rid of. Clearing out the clutter from your home and yard is a perfect way to start the summer.

Why Junk Removal is Getting Big in San Antonio

“Everything’s bigger in Texas.” That’s a very popular slogan that many locals are happy to share with out-of-towners. Usually, this will happen when someone is delivered a fresh piece of grilled steak that is as big as their head!

That slogan can always apply to your home that is overflowing with junk. If everything is bigger in Texas then maybe you’ve got more junk than you can handle. What’s that doing for your home value? What about the value of your neighbor’s home? We’ve all seen “those houses.” You know the ones with the car up on blocks in the driveway. Or an above ground pool that hasn’t been used in years. Or old furniture sitting out on the porch. Does that describe your home? It doesn’t have to be that way; especially when there is experience help in the form of the pros at Junk King San Antonio standing by to help you get rid of all that junk once and for all.

There are some folks who travel all around the country and the world and bring back all kinds of trinkets and treasures they are proud to put on display. But you don’t even have to leave San Antonio to get all kinds of junk piled up in your home. Sometimes that junk begins as leftovers from a home improvement project. Instead of hauling the construction waste off to a dump yard it gets piled up alongside the garage. There could be left over Cinco de Mayo party decorations that can never be used. Maybe it’s an old fridge that is totally busted but what can you do? You know you’re not supposed to put these things out on the curb. You might even feel guilty about tossing them out because you paid good money for them at one point. That’s true but ask yourself, “Are you ever going to use this junk again?” If the answer is a quick “no” then you know what has to be done. Get it gone!

When you make the smart move to hire the professional junk haulers at Junk King, you’ll be getting some expert help. You might not think you need to be an expert to haul out a heavy piece of furniture but if you’ve ever thrown out your back then you know how important it is to “lift things right.” That’s what these experienced junk haulers will be able to do: move the right way. They’ll also have a big enough truck to hold whatever you’re tossing out. Even though the pick-up is the most popular truck in San Antonio, there is just so much that a pick-up bed can hold. Remember “everything is bigger in Texas.” So how big will your junk pile be? No matter how big, it’s going to be a distant memory once the pros get a hold of it!

San Antonio Dishwasher Removal – Don’t Risk Fungus & Bacteria

Get ready to freak out: according to scientists your dishwasher could be a breeding ground for bacteria and killer bugs! Think about this for a moment. Where does most of the bacteria grow? In a moist and hot environments. Doesn’t that describe perfectly a dishwasher? A recent survey found that 62% of dishwashers contained the fungi Exophiala dermatitidis and E. phaeomuriformis around the rubber band that sealed the door. These particular forms of fungus are referred to as black yeasts and can be extremely dangerous for human beings. Even though you’re using detergents in your dishwasher cycle some of that bacterium manages to survive and thrive in high temperatures. Does this mean you need to throw out old dishwasher? Depending on how old it really is it might be something to consider.
If the rubber seal around the dishwasher’s door is where the bacteria lives then you can take a look at your own dishwasher and just see how intact that rubber seal is. Are there tiny cracks in that seal? Guess who’s throwing a party in those cracks? That would be all the bacteria! Some people try doing a cleansing of their dishwasher by running vinegar through the wash cycle without any dishes loaded up. While this might do a good job of disinfecting it also might not reach deep down in those areas where the bacterium is living. This would be the perfect time and place that old dishwasher.
New dishwasher designs are more compliant with regard to health concerns. The rubber seals, drains and other components where bacteria can grow have been refined to help prevent that. You can also help the cause by giving your dishwasher a wipe down at least once a week with the strongest disinfectant.
Before switching over to your new dishwasher you’re going to have to make arrangements to get rid of the old one. This is where you can hire a professional crew of San Antonio junk haulers like Junk King  to show up and take that dishwasher away. Just because you might schedule to have your dishwasher taken away doesn’t mean you can’t have other things removed at the same time. If you plan it right, getting rid of your dishwasher could be the perfect excuse to get rid of a lot of other junk.
Take a simple tour around your house to see what else you might consider tossing out. Are there some unwanted and worn-out pieces of furniture that could go? Boxes of dusty papers and clothes that are meant for the trash heap? What about all the refuse from those unfinished projects that are now just taking up space in the garage or basement? Truth of the matter is that old dishwashers just going to take up one small corner in a big hauling truck. Certainly you could fill that truck up with a lot more junk. You might even be thinking of replacing all your kitchen appliances to make sure you’re getting the most energy efficient models. That will fill up a truck for sure!

Reorganize Your Office Space in San Antonio

You can tell a lot about an office by the way its employees decorate their desks. There are some corporations who would prefer that there be no display of personal effects in office. They want a sterile environment that reflects their professional work ethic. Obviously, this is not going to be a fun place to work! However, if you happen to find yourself in an office where employees get to display pictures of their family or beloved pets along with other keepsakes you going to find a very happy environment. In many ways it’s that type of environment which is more conducive for better productivity. Just because workers are allowed to personalize their desks doesn’t mean they are necessarily unorganized. What looks like clutter to some could just be a very, complicated system. However, even a fun office could benefit the major reorganization of its space. That can only happen when the staff dedicates themselves to getting rid of all their office junk.
Office junk can come in many forms. It could be a dozen or so office chairs that have been replaced by more comfortable models. Instead of tossing out those chairs because that would be “wasteful” those chairs end up being jammed into the hall closet or down in the basement storage space. Now suddenly what should be used for more practical purposes has become a furniture storage area for furniture that will never be used again. And how many of those office furniture pieces are actually damaged but are just shoved into a closet because nobody has the wherewithal to move them from the office space?
Of course, every office has their collection of file boxes. These are extremely hard to let go of. But ask yourself this question how many of those files are already loaded onto a computer? And weren’t they loaded onto computer so you could get rid of the files? Now is your chance!
Then there is the issue of all those fax machines, PC hard drives, monitors and other pieces of office equipment that have been upgraded. Clearly just can’t throw those away! Once again you’re not using your space the way you should be. It’s understandable why you wouldn’t want to toss all those pieces of equipment into the dumpster. They are after all considered e-waste and need to be disposed of properly. This is where the services of a professional junk hauling team like Junk King San Antonio can come into play.
Not only will they be able to handle the unwanted office furniture issue but they should deathly be able to handle all the electronic waste whether that means taking it to a proper recycling center or it simply making sure it is broken down in the proper way.
Once all that junk is gone there’ll be room for more storage space or more filing cabinets. The goal of any business should be to expand but you can’t really do that if you cramped for space!

San Antonio Patio Furniture Disposal

Although Hollywood might be the movie making capital in the world, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the movie watching capitol in the world. Actually, that honor goes to India. However, there are just as many film festivals popping up around the country to give local residents a taste of the unique and sometimes offbeat variety of independent films. Did you know that San Antonio is a proud sponsor of its own film festival? In fact, the San Antonio Film Festival has been going on for 17 years. This year the festival is expanding its reach by providing screenings at six different locations around town. As much fun as it is to head out to the movies to see a film nothing can compare with enjoying the latest cinematic treat in your own home. This summer you might want to have a new twist on watching a movie. Why not set up a drive-in theatre in your own backyard?
You don’t have to be told that the summers around San Antonio are getting hotter. The idea of hanging outdoors in a cool evening breeze holds a lot of appeal for many folks. This is one of the reasons why drive-in movies became so popular in the first place. Today, thanks to cutting edge audio visual equipment you can actually set up your own version of an outdoor movie screening with very little effort. All you need is a DVD projector and a screen. Believe it or not, you can rent an inflatable screen to put up in the backyard. In fact, you can rent or even buy an entire outdoor screening system at a very affordable price.
Try to picture this scenario: You’ve got a pool in the backyard and a wonderful floating raft. You set up your outdoor movie watching system then watch your pick of flicks while floating in comfort. Just make sure you don’t get your popcorn wet. This is a great idea for a backyard bar-b-que or block party. You could even set up an outdoor movie watching event as a fundraiser for your church or school. Of course, before you invite friends and neighbors over to your home you’ll want to make sure that your backyard is ready. This could mean getting rid of that old unwanted patio furniture. To do that, you should consider hiring a local based San Antonio disposal company like Junk King who will have the muscle and the means to move that furniture.
The mere fact that patio furniture spends its life outdoors can take a beating from the weather. The brutal beating from the sun, rain and wind storms can cause a lot of damage to your furniture. This in turn can lead to frays and sharp edges popping up. Best to get rid of your old patio furniture before it breaks further or causes harm. Besides, if you’re having a movie premiere in your backyard, you want everything looking first class!

Prepare for Fiesta San Antonio – Get Rid of that Old Junk

Way back in 1891, the folks of San Antonio wanted to find way to honor the heroes of the Texas Revolution so they came up with Fiesta San Antonio. Over the years, this celebration has evolved into a city-wide party running for several days. There are all kinds of tasty treats, art exhibits and parades filling up the days and nights.
Among the highlight is the Texas Cavaliers River Parade which is San Antonio’s version of the Rose Parade, but in this case the decorated floats are barges winding their way down the San Antonio River Walk. For the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, everyone is encouraged to dress up and carry some kind of illumination. This is a fun time for the whole family. And don’t forget about A Night In Old San Antonio which is actually a four night celebration featuring flying cascarones. These are confetti-filled eggshells meant to be smashed over the head of friends both old and new.
Many folks get into the spirit of Fiesta San Antonio by extending an open invitation into their homes. This is the perfect excuse for family gatherings and backyard bar-b-ques. If you’re gearing up for a festival party then you obviously want to make sure you home is ready. This could be the perfect excuse you’ve been waiting for to get rid of that eyesore hot tub once and for all.
A lot of times when folks buy a home, they “inherit” certain things that the previous homeowner installed. These could be fences, hedgerows, swimming pools and yes, hot tubs. At first the idea of a having a hot tub in your new home was probably thought of as an added bonus. Then once you moved in, you soon discovered why that hot tub was empty: it’s doesn’t work anymore! Unfortunately, this is not an item you can simply unplug and toss out with the garbage. You might need to bring in the pros – Junk King San Antonio.
A professional San Antonio junk hauling crew should be well versed in hot tub disposal (or any other junk items for that matter). Although it might look like one thing, there are actually several components to a hot tub that have to be properly dismantled, not the least of which is the heavy motor that powers the entire operation. You could try to break down the tub piece by piece and load those items up in your pickup, but what happens when you’re left with the big fiberglass shell? Smashing that up in to little pieces isn’t really a safe and practical option. What you really need is several movers and a big enough truck to haul it off in.  While they’re at your home they can haul off any other junk items you have lying around – broken refrigerators, old washers, yard waste or ripped mattresses.
If you inherited a hot tub that you’re not longer using, wouldn’t it be easier to just point to that beast and say, “Get it gone!” Of course it would. And that’s what you can have accomplished when you give Junk King San Antonio a call at 1-888-888-JUNK. Once the hot tub is gone, you can hang the streamers and the lights and get ready for the fiesta!

Changing Times in Television – San Antonio TV Disposal

Can you ever imagine a time when you actually got to pick between a cheaper black & white television versus a color television? Or how about no color television at all? That’s how things started out in the television industry. Today, it’s all about high definition and flat plasma screens. As quick as a new version of a TV hits the market, you’re old set has become obsolete. That’s why many folks in the San Antonio area are trading in their old TV sets for newer models. But what happens to the one you’re not using anymore? It can’t fit into a garbage can and you don’t want to hang onto it. That’s why you should call up a local San Antonio TV disposal crew like Junk King to take out the old and make way of the new.
Speaking of old television, it’s always interesting to look back on where we’ve come in terms of actual television shows.  Just like your older TV sets are always getting replaced with newer in-demand models, TV programming is also in a constant state of flux. The first US television shows began broadcasting in 1948. However, it wasn’t until 1950 when what could best be described as the first official television season kicked into gear. Here are the top five shows for 1950:
Texaco Star Theatre
Fireside Theatre
Philco TV Playhouse
Your Show of Shows
The Colgate Comedy Hour
These first hits reflect the nations’ attitudes towards entertainment. Audiences were used to seeing variety shows or dramas in the theatre. It makes sense that these would be the first types of programs offered up. Now look at 1955:
The $64,000 Question
I Love Lucy
The Ed Sullivan Show
Disneyland
The Jack Benny Show
TV programmers started to branch out with game shows. The situation comedy was also coming on strong borrowing a page from the popular radio versions of the same show. But if there is one thing you can count on with television, it’s always changing. Look what happened five years later in 1960:
Gunsmoke
Wagon  Train
Have Gun Will Travel
The Andy Griffith Show
The Real McCoys
The westerns dominated and they had a pretty good run. When was the last time there was a western TV show in primetime? Now jump ahead to 1980 and you’ll find a true mix bag of television tastes:
Dallas
The Dukes of Hazzard
60 Minutes
MASH
The Love Boat
Today American Idol and NCIS top the weekly rating charts. What’s next? It’s anybody’s guess. The bigger question will be what will you be watching these programs on in your San Antonio home? If you’re ready for a TV upgrade, then you need to clear the wall or corner of that old set. Hiring an experienced junk hauling team will make sure your old set can be taken away with the least amount of effort. While you’re getting rid of that TV, you could also tap into the muscle of the movers and have them take away more junk from your home. No sense wasting that trip when you’ve probably got some other items like furniture, boxes of papers or garage junk that could be destined for the trash heap. One call will have you covered.

San Antonio Furniture Removal | Junk Removal & Hauling Services

Medical history was recently made in San Antonio when the world’s largest kidney exchange occurred over a three day period.  Sixteen recipients got kidneys from sixteen donors. It’s the largest simultaneous organ exchange of its kind anywhere in the world. This happened when one donor wanted to give their kidney to a loved one, but couldn’t because they weren’t a match. That’s when another person with the same set of circumstances stepped in to donate their kidney in exchange for a match for their loved one. Before you know it, you have a chain of folks all giving and taking at once. The San Antonio medical team is to be commended for such an amazing feat.

So, what does any of this have to do with furniture removal? In many ways, getting rid of your old furniture is like getting rid of an organ that has worn out. Obviously, a kidney transplant is far more serious then tossing out an old sofa, but if you have the opportunity to handle the small stuff in your life then the big stuff will be easier to take on.

A piece of furniture can also be donated. If it is in reasonable condition, you might want to pass along a dining room table or bedroom set to someone you know that could really use it. Or you could donate your furniture to charitable organizations like Goodwill or the Salvation Army. They can turn around and sell it and use the money to help out other folks in need. Think of it as a kind of circle of life but with a sofa. Of course all of that depends on the condition of your donated furniture. Is it really a “match”  for a new family or has it outlived itself?

Do you remember the day when your furniture crossed over into the junk zone? Was it that last spill of wine or the last stampede of muddy dog paws? Was it when the leg broke and you tried to fix it with nails and screws? Was it when your mother-in-law came for a visit and refused to sit anywhere? You probably remember the day very well. Whatever the cause, if your furniture can now be officially classified as junk you have no other choice but to call up a San Antonio furniture removal company like Junk King to haul it off.

Before you make that call, think about the total picture of what you have to get rid of. Yes, the sofa might be the reason you’re hiring the removal crew, but what about those rolled up rugs you’ll never use? How about the bags of dusty drapes?  Let’s face it; if you put your mind to it you might just come up with an entire truck full of junk that can be taken out of your life. Of course if it is just one sofa, then don’t wait for the other junk to pile up. Get that furniture out of your house and replaced it with something new, clean and fresh.

Junk King San Antonio can handle all your furniture removal needs with efficiency and an eco-friendly touch.  Simply call 1-888-888-JUNK or book a free on site estimate online.
