Need Yard Waste Cleaned Up In San Diego? Junk King Is The Best Option Around!

yard waste removal

If you live in or near San Diego, odds are you’ve got a lawn.

Okay, maybe it’s one of those “postage stamp” sized patches of grass that passes for a yard in the back or front of your condominium or duplex. But many, many others have full-blown, grass-covered, suburban lawns that are the traditional hallmark of a single-family dwelling.

And lawns mean maintenance. And lawn maintenance means yard waste.

yard waste removal guide

What is Yard Trash and Why is it a Problem?

Typically, the larger the yard, the greater the amount of yard trash cleanup that has to be done. And there are probably three dozen other things most homeowners and renters would rather be doing than yard trash and yard waste pickup and cleaning!

But the problem is that, if one doesn’t regularly pick up all the large clippings, broken branches, dead leaves, pet droppings, and other assorted yard waste and trash, they can damage the lawn. Lawn grass, in general, is both rugged and fragile, resilient and frail.

Drought and scorching heat may sear the grass leaves above the surface of your yard, but the root structure can survive. However, dog urine and other substances can do sometimes irreparable damage to otherwise healthy lawn grass.

In addition to the maintenance of a healthy lawn, yard trash needs to be removed simply because it can be an eyesore and oftentimes even a safety hazard.

You don’t want your three-year-old playing in the backyard with a pile of broken fence boards full of nails and jagged wood edges piled up in a corner! And that’s true for large piles of brush or even rubbish such as concrete rubble or scrap metal.

However, doing all the cleaning and pickup yourself is a pain. Which is why, when it comes to yard waste and trash pickup, Junk King San Diego should be your first call.

The Best Way to Get Rid of an Old Fence? Call Junk King San Diego!

Broken Fence Removal

updated 4/22/22

Do you need an old fence removed right away? Click Here.

They say that “good fences make good neighbors.” Along those same lines, however, it is important to mention that bad fences can certainly anger a neighbor as well. According to recent statistics, almost half of homes in the United States have some sort of fencing in the backyard.

Another 5 percent of homeowners have a fenced-in front yard as well. Fences don’t just mark property boundaries, but they can also offer a sense of security and privacy, and also help to keep pets (and young children) from wandering away from the home. Furthermore, a quality fence can also drive up a property’s value.

According to one real estate website, “privacy wood fences and solid fences like concrete or cast iron can net a profit of at least 50% of the material and installation costs on resale. So fencing materials play an integral role in determining the overall home value during appraisal.”

Despite all of these obvious advantages that come with installing a fence around your home and yard, every type of fencing material does eventually wear down and needs to be replaced. Wooden fences are prone to rotting, while chain link fences can quickly begin to rust if not properly maintained. Even stone, concrete, or brick fences may eventually need to be replaced once they fall into disrepair.

An Old Broken Fence Is Bad For Your San Diego Property

Fencing that is broken, dilapidated, or otherwise poorly maintained can be an eyesore on an otherwise beautiful home and property. If you are currently listing your home for sale on the local real estate market, an old and run-down fence will often be the first thing that potential buyers notice and will often make buyers reconsider making an offer.

Also, ragged and unkempt fencing may anger your neighbors and might even warrant notice from your local homeowners association. For businesses and other commercial properties, a decrepit and unmaintained fence is also a great way to turn away customers before they ever enter your business.

Though you may very well be able to restore or repair an old fence, in many cases a shabby fence is best torn down and thrown away to make room for a newer and more refined enclosure for your property. No matter how many coats of varnish you put on, rotting wood will eventually succumb to the forces of nature and eventually break down.

Learn about the importance of recycling.

Fencing Material Can Be Difficult to Dispose Of In San Diego

Unfortunately, fencing materials are notoriously heavy, bulky, and hard to get rid of. Trying to move thousands of old bricks or hundreds of wooden planks is several days of the job. Even if you have a huge pickup truck that you can use to haul away your broken-down fencing materials, many local dumps simply will not accept large amounts of old fencing materials because they are classified as construction and demolition (C&D) debris

In fact, the city of San Diego has recently revealed new C&D debris diversion requirements. According to the City´s Environmental Services, “for projects with permits issued on or after July 1, 2016, the diversion requirement will increase to 65 percent by weight of the total C&D debris generated by the project.

The diversion requirement for projects with permits issued through June 30, 2016, will remain at 50 percent.” This essentially means that if you try to haul your old fencing materials to the local dump, you may be required to find ways to recycle or reuse up to 65 percent of what you intend to haul away.

So how exactly can homeowners, business owners, and other individuals in the San Diego area get rid of old and dilapidated fencing materials efficiently and cost-effectively? Enter Junk King San Diego

Can You Recycle Your Old Fence?

While the more traditional approach of simply “dumping” old fencing material may be difficult and a bit more challenging than you may have anticipated, it’s not all bad news. In fact, there is a far better alternative for disposing of old fence components and hardware: recycling.

For most people, the term “recycling” immediately brings to mind cardboard waste and old soda cans. Although there is certainly a huge recycling market for these materials, recycling of waste products encompasses far more than cans, bottles, and plastic.

A significant number of residential fences in San Diego are constructed of wood. This may be redwood, cedar, or even pine. Depending on the condition of the wood fence materials, some of these boards, or pickets, can even be reused either by the homeowners for new projects, or by organizations such as the Habitat ReStore. Sometimes, depending on their condition, even the metal hardware can be reused, as well.

And for all that old wood fence material that is in such bad shape that it can’t be reasonably used again, there is recycling.

In fact, according to one source,

“Scrap lumber from home improvement projects and other untreated wood has a number of uses for recycling. It can be chipped and used in compost or mulch. It can also be turned into particleboard or chipboard lumber.

Where you can recycle wood varies from community to community. New York City residents can bundle lumber with tree limbs for curbside pickup. In Berkeley, CA, and Chattanooga, TN, wood can be dropped off at municipal recycling centers. Many private companies that create home and garden products will also take untreated lumber.”

The one type of wood product that cannot be recycled nor disposed of in landfills in California is pressure-treated wood.

This wood is officially known as ‘treated wood waste’ or TWW. It is considered hazardous waste by the state of California and is only permitted in Class III non-hazardous waste facilities in compliance with requirements in Section 25230 of the Health and Safety Code.

In San Diego County, these landfills are the Otay and Sycamore facilities.

Recycling Old Fencing Can Mean More than Just Wood

But what if your fence was more of a wall? And the debris that you have now that it’s been taken down is mostly brick or masonry rubble?

No worries! It turns out that concrete, brick, rock, and masonry is all recyclable, too

In the industry, masonry is a general term for material made as blocks, usually stone, brick, or concrete. However, it can include gravel, concrete rubble, and even sand. The concrete is often crushed and processed to create recycled concrete aggregate, or RCA. And most landscaping blocks are actually made of concrete, so they lend themselves well to recycling.

Got bricks? According to one article

“Bricks can be recycled in two ways. First, they can be cleaned and reused in another building or project. Alternatively, they can be crushed into brick chips (for use as a landscape material) and/or finer particles (for use in manufacturing road-base, track and drainage material, fill sand or new bricks).”

So, the great thing about all your old fencing waste and debris is that it is almost all recyclable – even the metal hardware and fasteners. And if you aren’t keen on figuring out how to make all that happen yourself, the team from Junk King will take care of that part of the process for you when they clear out all your fencing debris for you.

How to Dismantle Your Fence in 4 Simple Steps

Depending on the size, construction, and material of your residential fence, dismantling or “deconstruction” can be a fairly simple task. In fact, it is quite likely that it’s a project you can do on your own or with very little help.

Since most residential fences tend to be built from wood and are, more often than not, some variety of picket and post construction, we’ll focus on that.

Here is a basic overview of the four essential steps for tearing down your old fence:

  • Plan and Prepare: Before you start removing anything, you should make the following calls.
  • Utility companies: Find out if any utility lines run under or near the fence before you start digging. This can be done by dialing 811 and have locators come and provide markings where gas pipelines or electric lines are located and indicate pipe material and diameter.
  • Local government: You may need to get a permit if your fence is going to be more than six feet high or is for the front or side of your property.
  • Your neighbors: Let your neighbors know about your project. They may need to make changes to their yard space use, especially if they have outdoor pets or need to move things for you.

Also, you will want to plan for where you will stage your fencing debris and waste ahead of time so that it is easy to get to, to work around, and does not present a safety hazard.

Remove the Gates

Start your dismantling with the gates.

  • Unscrew the hinges from the gate posts
  • Lift the gate away from the fence and put it aside
  • Remove any remaining hardware from the fence posts

Detach Fence Panels or Boards

If your fence was built with pre-fab panels, it may be easier to remove them as one piece. If you do not plan to reuse the entire panels, then you can simply cut them off at the posts.

  • Cut the rails with a reciprocating saw or hand saw as close to the fence posts as possible
  • Saw or break the fence panels into smaller sections if needed
  • Stage each panel in your debris area

If your fence is made of individual boards or pickets,

  • Unfasten the boards from the rails by using a power screwdriver if they are attached with screws or, if they’re nailed on, you may need to pry the boards loose with a pry bar before using your hammer to remove them
  • Stack the boards in your debris staging area

Pull Up and Remove Fence Posts

If your fence posts were simply buried and not set in concrete, simply doing a bit of digging and rocking the posts until they come loose will often do the trick.

If, however, the posts are in concrete footings, you may have to winch or lever them out, if possible. Depending on the amount of space around the posts, you can also simply dig down and around the footing until you can tilt the post and concrete enough to pull it up.

Use Junk King For Safe Yard Waste Cleanup

san diego yard waste removal

[This blog was originally published on April 30, 2020 and updated on December 28, 2020. ]

Things have a tendency to pile up around the house.

This is especially true if you are spending more time in that house. And with the recurring “stay at home” orders, sheltering in place, and the occasional need to self-quarantine, many of us are doing exactly that.

But this tendency for things to pile up is also true for our backyards. And that can require yard waste cleanup.

In fact, many people have been taking advantage of this time at home to reinvigorate their lawns, landscaping, and even their backyard gardens. And, depending on where you live, vegetable gardens have become a very popular project for families to take on.

DIY Projects In Your Outdoor Space Means Yard Waste Cleanup

The problem, however, is that all this yard work, landscaping, and possibly creating new gardens can mean clearing away space and creating large piles of dirt, rocks, sod, and assorted landscape junk and debris. You may even have some old lawn furniture, dilapidated sheds, or even old hot tubs that no longer work sitting in your yard and taking up space.

Not to mention presenting a potential safety issue.

Any junk, debris, or piles of yard waste can potentially have rusty nails, exposed screws, metal fittings, rebar, or even broken glass laying around. These things can be dangerous for kids, pets, and for unfortunate adults who happen to trip over or bump into them.

This is the kind of yard waste that you want to get cleaned up fast, and yard waste cleanup is exactly the type of service that Junk King San Diego can provide.

New call-to-action

Some Additional Yard Waste Cleanup Precautions

Unless you’ve been asleep for most of 2020 you are painfully aware of the coronavirus pandemic and the complex assortment of restrictions that have been implemented to help protect everyone from COVID-19. These precautions, while presenting challenges for many businesses and for daily activities, have not prevented Junk King San Diego from removing junk.

In fact, our service is considered an “essential business” and we have gone to great lengths to accommodate the requirements of federal, state, and local health agencies. Junk King has put into place several precautions to make junk removal safe and worry-free for both our customers and our moving crews.

For example, following the recommendations of the CDC, all of our employees wear masks and gloves for every junk pickup. In the course of picking up and loading junk and debris, our teams maintain a reasonable social distance. For this reason, most of our pickups take place at the curbside whenever possible.

That means we can pick up your yard waste while you are safe on the porch!

However, when it comes to safe yard waste cleanup, we can still pick up everything wherever it happens to be piled up. That also includes dismantling any structure that you have in your backyard that you would like to bring down and dispose of.

Here’s what we’ve been incorporating into daily operations to adapt:

100% TOUCHLESS PICKUP – We’ll maintain a 6-foot distance from every customer. Our haulers can pick up curbside, never entering your home.

VIRTUAL ESTIMATES – Send photos to the Junk King team for a touchless price quote.

NO CONTACT PAYMENT – You can pay for our services over the phone to limit social exposure.

PROTECTIVE GEAR – Gloves, masks and hand sanitizers are provided on every truck used to protect you and our haulers.

At Junk King San Diego we have implemented touchless, no-contact junk removal practices that incorporate safety steps to keep everyone safe during this time of coronavirus concerns.

Safe Yard Waste Cleanup Means More Than Grass and Leaves

The types of materials that Junk King can pick up and remove makes for quite a long list.

For yard waste that can include anything from palm fronds to gravel, concrete rubble to old lumber, and even broken lawnmowers, trimmers, and hot tubs!

And, of course, grass, leaves, tree trimmings, and other organic waste and debris.

But it’s good to know that Junk King San Diego can remove and dispose of far more than what you’ve piled up in the yard. If you are planning on having us come to clean up your outdoor waste piles, why not have us take that old, unused junk still clogging up your garage, attic, or tool shed?

In fact, we can take just about anything except hazardous waste, including:

  • Old furniture
  • Televisions
  • Used appliances
  • Old electronics
  • Trash and household garbage
  • Mattresses
  • Refrigerators
  • and even construction waste

Essentially, if it’s something you no longer want or need, simply show us where it is and we’ll take care of it with our touchless, no-contact junk removal service.

What Does It Cost for Yard Waste Cleanup?

We know that simply saying, “It depends.” isn’t what you really want to know, but it’s true: the amount you pay is based solely on the amount of space your yard waste takes up in our truck.

This is how we maintain our policy of affordable pricing.

Our prices are always based on how much space a customer’s items take up in our trucks get packed up and never on how heavy the load is, like some companies do. This can make a big difference for you, especially when you are getting rid of large piles of rock and dirt!

And we work hard to ensure that our prices are better than any other licensed and insured, eco-friendly, recycling-based junk removal company in our trade area.

As we noted here, many junk hauling firms charge by weight. This is actually a disadvantage for customers with particularly heavy junk items such as old appliances or masonry rubble. You will never have that problem with Junk King San Diego.

Because we only charge by the amount of space your junk takes up in our trucks, this means savings for you and simple, transparent pricing.

And, along with great pricing, we always offer free estimates so you don’t have to wait to see what your junk will cost to be hauled off. And we also guarantee to beat any written estimate.

You can try it yourself by using our free pricing tool and estimator.

This tool can give you an estimate on your own by simply adding up the items you want us to haul away. Our pricing estimator will give you an online estimate of the actual price our friendly team will provide you with once they’re onsite.

It’s incredibly easy to set up your junk removal session with Junk King over the phone or online. And, if you book online, you can start saving right away with an automatic $20 off your junk removal job.

Where To Find Fast Yard Waste Disposal

Updated 5/22/22

There are many wonderful things about living in San Diego and our neighboring communities. One of those is the weather. In fact, San Diego is often ranked number one for the best weather in the country!

According to a San Diego Union Tribune story,

“San Diego ranked No. 1 with 261 ‘pleasant’ days, defined as having an average temperature between 55 to 75 degrees, minimum temperature above 45 degrees and no significant rain or snow.”

What this climate means for many San Diegans is lush and beautifully green lawns. And, with over 500,000 households in the City of San Diego, that can add up to an enormous number of lawns!

And taking care of all those luxurious lawns and landscaping also means massive quantities of yard waste. This can simply be piles of leaves and cut grass that are raked up regularly, or it could be much more substantial: like all the waste, trash, and debris that results from a major landscaping project.

Which all adds up to quite a bit of yard waste disposal that needs to take place.

yard waste removal guide

When Your Yard Waste Gets Large Than Your Yard Waste Bin

Junk King Trash Removal

Most San Diego residents have recycling bins designed to take organic waste such as all the stuff that we clear off of our lawns. And if your lawns are particularly large and expansive, then the piles of grass clippings and other organic debris from your regular yard maintenance can be pretty big.

Of course, not everyone disposes of it all. At least not in their green recycling bins.

Many homeowners and renters prefer to leave the grass clippings in the lawn after they mow it. In fact, according to Oregon State University

“Unless you’ve let the lawn grow excessively long, or the clippings are in thick clumps, grass clippings are a good source of nutrients. Leaving clippings helps save fertilizer costs and thereby prevents ground and surface water contamination.”

Others use grass clippings in their compost piles. Essentially, composting involves mixing grass clippings and other plant and organic materials with a small amount of soil that contains certain microorganisms that decompose organic matter.

As it turns out, your grass clippings are an excellent addition to a compost pile because of its high nitrogen content.

Regardless of whether you reuse most of your yard waste, or simply put it in a suitable bin for recycling, most of the time that’s sufficient to take care of it all and get it off your lawn. But what about those times when there’s too much to reuse, repurpose, or even recycle yourself?

Yard Waste Disposal in San Diego Can Be a Big Job

Maybe you’ve launched a major backyard makeover. That’s a great project for improving your outdoor spaces while increasing the resale value of your home. And for those of us living in San Diego, the climate and the weather make that kind of work much easier. In fact, it’s the weather and the climate that make for good reasons to consider a backyard and front yard renovation.

While many regions throughout the Western United States and especially California are in a state of severe drought, the City of San Diego and San Diego County are fortunate to only be in what is referred to as “moderate” drought conditions.

 full service junk removal

However, that is projected to worsen if we don’t experience a significant shift in our weather patterns. So, changing over to a low-water, drought-resistant landscape design is a great idea.

In addition, ever since the onset of COVID-19 and the subsequent shutdowns and numerous stay-at-home orders, entertaining guests outside by a fire pit or making use of backyard kitchens has become a real “thing” for many residents. And having a nice lawn and outdoor space is an important part of your backyard looking its best.

Which means you may want to get rid of some of that old yard waste that’s made up of debris like old hot tub parts stacked in the corner of the yard, of broken down exercise or playset equipment that you’ve never gotten rid of.

Old fence boards, dismantled decking debris, broken down storage shed, or even a gazebo that’s literally falling over – these are all yard waste disposal jobs that are perfect for a company like Junk King San Diego.

Junk King San Diego – Because Yard Waste Disposal Doesn’t Have to Be a DIY Job

Even though we may be the “King of Junk Removal,” Junk King San Diego is also a great team to call on for help with your yard waste disposal needs.

Although we may come over to your home (or place of work) to pick up and remove your yard waste material, we treat this task as we would with any typical junk removal session. In other words, we send over a two-man team of friendly, courteous, and professional junk removal experts along with a big truck for your yard waste disposal session.

However, since you will be having us there, you can take advantage of the appointment to have us remove and load up anything else from your yard that you want to get rid of. That includes non-organic items like old patio furniture, birdbaths, broken lawn mowers, or concrete planters.

And you don’t have to stop there!

The Junk King crew is fully equipped and prepared to relieve you of any stacks or piles of old fencing, construction waste, lumber, bricks, stones, concrete rubble, or even large piles of dirt. It can all go into the back of our truck for fast and convenient removal.

Outdoors and In – Junk King San Diego Can Take It All

When our highly trained junk removal crew is finished with the junk and debris from your yard it is quite possible that you may have some things you want to get rid of from the inside of the house.

The smart move is to take full advantage of the moment and point out to us all the other junk and unwanted items you need to get rid of. We can easily carry out an old futon or bedroom set that you no longer use. You can also have us remove old electronic gear like computers, laptops, DVD players or stereos

And the best part is that all of your electronic waste, or e-waste, will be taken to a certified recycling center. In fact, Junk King is the pioneer in “green” junk disposal, and we regularly recycle as much as 60 percent of all the junk – and yard waste – that we remove from homes and workplaces.

Another benefit of having all your yard waste removed, is that you can more easily assess what improvements you can make in your yard. Whether you do that in the spring or wait until the fall, it’s always good to start with a “blank canvas.”

And you can always count on Junk King San Diego to provide you with fast and affordable yard waste disposal and junk hauling.
