For those of us living in San Diego, a valuable aspect of life here in “America’s Finest City” is the vistas, the landscapes, and the natural beauty of the region. And this includes the San Diego River.

The river travels 52 miles from its headwaters to the ocean, Originating in the Cuyamaca Mountains northwest of the town of Julian. From there it then flows to the southwest until it reaches the El Capitan Reservoir and the El Capitan Dam. Below the dam, the river runs west through Santee and San Diego.

As the river passes through the San Diego community of Tierrasanta, it flows through another San Diego treasure, the Mission Trails Regional Park, one of the largest urban parks in America.

Unfortunately, along the more than fifty miles of riverway, it picks up trash, junk, and rubbish.

Keeping the San Diego River Clean and Green

As it turns out, keeping a river clean requires a great deal of resources and labor, especially when that river runs through the heart of California’s second largest city, from the mountains to the sea.

While efforts have long been made to clean the trash and debris that has made its way into the river over the years, a dedicated organization was needed to bring attention to this pressing need and to bring together the resources needed to accomplish the mission of both preserving and conserving the river and its natural environment.

To that end, the San Diego River Park Foundation was founded in 2001 and is dedicated to conserving the water, wildlife, recreation, culture, and community involved with the San Diego River.

The San Diego River Park Foundation sponsors and hosts several events and activities. Among these are what are known as the Clean and Green Team – Volunteers Leading River Restoration and River Clean Up.

According to the Foundation’s website,

“Twice each year, volunteers survey the San Diego River during RiverBlitz to map and record trash and debris sites.

The Clean and Green Team mobilizes to coordinate volunteers to remove these trash sites! On Saturdays throughout the year, volunteers gather to help create a healthier, cleaner, safer San Diego River Park system.”

And Junk King San Diego is wholly onboard that this a great way to give back to the community and improve the health of the river.

Which is why, in September 2022, we volunteered one of our junk hauling teams and a truck to allow the volunteers to use the back of our truck to dispose of the waste collected. Junk King then hauled the trash offsite to be recycled and disposed of properly.

Another Fabulously Successful Clean & Green Event at the San Diego River

In early September, a Junk King removal team and one of our big, red junk removal trucks made it’s way to the Clean and Green Team’s designated rendezvous point at the start of a beautiful Saturday morning. Their mission was to help pick up and remove trash and debris from the San Diego River while providing their truck as a staging and drop off point for trash removal.

In a city of close to 1.4 million people, the likelihood of rubbish, junk, and debris making its way into the river is quite high, so the clean up efforts are ongoing necessary. Fortunately, the tenacity and hard work pays off and the clean up activities always net huge amounts of trash removed from the river.

On this particular day, the Clean and Green team of 12 volunteers, along with an assist from the team of Junk King San Diego, succeeded in removing astounding haul of 3,640 pounds of trash from the river.

That’s over 250 pounds of trash per person that was pulled out of the San Diego River in one morning!

As much of that trash and junk as possible was loaded into the Junk King San Diego truck for sorting and, ultimately, recycling, and proper disposal. 

And since then, we’ve had the privilege of helping out time and again.

The San Diego River Foundation posted a recent tweet on their Twitter account sharing that,

“Over the last month, @SanDiegoJunk  has generously donated their hauling services for 3 of our River Rescue Clean-ups. Combined, they have helped us removed 8,400 pounds of trash! Thank You!”
