Signs Your Mattress Needs to be Replaced

You spend a third of your life, maybe more, on your mattress. This means that with the one exception of your office chair, your mattress is the single piece of furniture that you use the most. If it’s not a good mattress that’s providing you with the proper support, that’s going to have a major impact on your body and your health. Have you been waking up feeling tired or having trouble getting to sleep? It may not be anything to do with you—it may be your mattress.

Changing out your mattress is not something people often think about, even if they know that you should swap your mattress out every eight years or so. Part of this is due to the fact that you rarely actually see your mattress. It’s not like your sofa where you see signs of wear and tear. It’s also often easy to pass off aches and pains as side effects of exerting yourself too much or not exercising enough.

You Don’t Sleep Well

Having a single night of bad sleep here and there isn’t unusual. When that occurs, you can often place the blame on overexerting yourself, having a lot on your mind, or not feeling well. However, if you’re always or almost always waking up feeling like you didn’t rest, it’s time to look for another reason. There could be a health condition behind it all, but it also could be your mattress. If you’re always waking up in pain, it’s probably because the mattress no longer supports you like it should. This can lead to muscles, bones, and joints no longer being aligned like they should be.

If you do suspect some underlying health condition is behind this, go ahead and talk to your doctor about it. You may have to do a sleep study to rule out some issues such as sleep apnea. However, if you know it’s not a health issue, it’s probably your mattress. It’s time to call Junk King Tucson and get rid of it.

You Can Visibly See the Mattress Sagging

The next time you change your sheets, take a minute to look at your mattress. Remove any mattress protector or topper you have on it, too. Do you see the mattress sagging anywhere? If you have a traditional coil mattress, those coils will slowly flatten down over time. A memory foam mattress will also lose its support over the years, leaving areas that visibly sag. If you strip the mattress and can see that it dips where you sleep, you need another mattress

Another way to tell if your mattress is no longer providing good support is to lie down on it for a few minutes. Get up and watch the mattress. Do you see it flatten back out, or does the imprint of where you were lying stay in the mattress for several minutes? If it’s the latter, it shows that your mattress is too worn to properly support you.

The Coils Poke You

Another issue with a traditional coil mattress is that, over time, the coils can shift. This can cause them to start poking you in the back, side, or other area. When this happens, it can be very difficult to get comfortable and to stay asleep. If you tend to move around a lot during the night, you’re likely to hit this pokey spring several times. That can wake you up, interrupting your sleep cycle. A coil mattress can be flipped over, which may alleviate this issue for now. However, this is just a temporary fix because eventually, the springs will start poking through on the other side as well.

You Wake Up During the Night Multiple Times

When you go to bed at night, do you fall asleep quickly and stay asleep for most of the night? If not, why not? If you toss and turn a lot or simply cannot get comfortable so you can fall asleep, it’s a sign that your mattress is worn out. While your mattress may be very comfortable to start with, over time, the padding can break down. This leads to a lumpy mattress that isn’t comfortable for anyone.

It’s important that you get a good stretch of uninterrupted sleep each night so your body can recharge. Sleep is when the body is able to repair injuries, fight off disease, and help regulate itself. If you aren’t sleeping well, you may not heal as fast, may get sick more often, and may have more difficulty managing chronic health conditions.

Having your sleep cycle interrupted also affects your mental and emotional states. If you don’t sleep well, you’re going to have trouble concentrating and getting work done. Your reaction time will be slower, which means you could accidentally hurt yourself. You might forget small details or be so drowsy you fall asleep at your desk. Emotionally, you may find that it’s harder to remain calm. Small things that used to not bother you at all may make you irritated or angry. This can damage your relationships with colleagues and even with your family and friends.

Your Mattress is Loud

When you sit down on your mattress, does it make noise? If you hear a lot of creeks and groans, it’s a sign that your mattress has aged poorly. You shouldn’t hear a lot of noise from your mattress. It might make the occasional squeak, but if it’s every time you lie down, get up, or change positions, it’s a problem. It means the coils and other parts of your mattress are beginning to shift out of place or break down. If you look, you’ll likely see that the mattress is also sagging, so it’s time to consider replacing it.

You Smell Something Weird

You shouldn’t hear your mattress, and you shouldn’t smell it, either. If you start to pick up on a weird smell when you’re in bed and you’ve ruled out yourself (it happens), your clothing, and your bedding, it may be your mattress. This is especially true if you eat or drink in bed. Over the years, a few spills can lead to the mattress getting stained. Liquid from these spills can seep into the mattress along with your sweat. Once inside your mattress, this moisture combines with the warm, dark place to create the perfect environment for mold to grow.

Mold not only can cause your mattress to smell, but it can also affect your health. You’ll be constantly breathing in mold when you sleep, and that can affect your allergies and your breathing. Over the years, you may find that your breathing actually gets worse and you don’t know why. The answer may be found in your mattress. Any odd smells or multiple stains are signs that it’s time to consider replacing the mattress.

Other Mattresses Are Much More Comfortable

When traveling, have you noticed that you sleep a lot better at a hotel or at someone else’s house? This might be a sign that your mattress just isn’t cutting it any longer. Sleeping better in one other place might not necessarily mean your mattress is at fault—maybe that hotel or friend just had a really great mattress. However, if it’s something you notice regularly, it’s time to start thinking about replacing your mattress.

What if it Hasn’t Been Eight Years?

While the rule of thumb is to replace your mattress every eight years, that doesn’t mean that your mattress is going to last eight years. It’s possible it will wear out in two or three years, especially if it’s a low-quality product or it’s not taken care of. Letting children jump on your bed, for example, is going to damage the mattress pretty quickly. On the other hand, if you take really good care of your mattress, you could get ten or even twelve years out of it.

Regardless of how many years you’ve had your mattress, you need to swap it out if you’re not sleeping well. Go buy a new mattress and then reach out to Junk King Tucson to help you get rid of your old one.

How Junk Hauling Services Can Help You During a Move

Moving can be one of the most stressful and difficult tasks, especially if you don’t move very often or have lived in the same house for decades. When you’re young, you may move fairly often. You might move out of your parent’s home to go to college, then move from the dorm to an apartment. You don’t have that much stuff, though, and you may have left some things in your parent’s house. Eventually, though, you’ll start amassing furniture, pots and pans, utensils, and other things that you have to box up every time you move.

When you move, you’ll have to pack up everything and take it with you. Over time, the amount of stuff you own may have doubled or tripled. It can be a lot, so you may need to start looking at what you own and deciding if you really need it or not. Working with a junk hauling service can be a good way of getting rid of trash and other things you no longer need. Here are a few ways a junk hauling company like Junk King Tucson can assist you with your next move.

Do You Need Everything?

While the only thing that can truly take away a lot of moving stress is hiring someone to handle all of it, one thing that does help is sorting through things and getting rid of stuff you no longer need. That’s not to say you should get rid of things just so you don’t have to move them, but do take a look at what you’re moving. Do you really need it? Is it worth taking with you? Does it have any sentimental value? If the answer to these three questions is no, think about why you’re keeping the item. It may be time to let it go.

One solution to cutting down on the stuff you own is to look at what you can digitize. If you have old paperwork that you’re keeping just in case, consider scanning it. You can keep digital copies and recycle the physical ones. Some paperwork you may not even need to keep. Many people hold on to old bills and mortgage statements for years. Today, you can retrieve copies of most of these bills online, so there’s really no need to keep the paperwork. Of course, you may want to keep some original hardcopies, including original life insurance policies, mortgage paperwork, and other documents.

You might also be able to scan some of your children’s old school projects that you want to keep for the memories but don’t really do anything with. By scanning them, you can put them into a slideshow that plays on a digital picture frame or set them as your computer’s background.

Get Rid of Old Furniture

Furniture can take up a lot of space and can be one of the most difficult things to move due to its size. Before you start trying to maneuver all of your chairs, dressers, and other pieces of furniture into a truck or moving van, take a good look at all of it. Does any of it look worn? If anything isn’t usable, you shouldn’t move it. The only exception is if it’s an heirloom piece, and then you should look into getting it repaired. If it’s a more modern piece of furniture you purchased and it’s not usable, why keep it?

Next, consider where you’re moving to. Are you downsizing? If so, you may not have room for all of your furniture. Take a look at what you have and what you regularly use. Even if it’s in good shape, now might be a good time to get rid of that uncomfortable chair you don’t like sitting in or the chest of drawers you don’t really use that often. This is all furniture you could pass on to relatives or friends if they’re in need, or you could donate it.

If you are moving into a smaller home, you’ll want to measure each room carefully so you can get an idea of how your furniture will look in it. It can be hard to visualize what the space will look like or how furniture will fit in it, which can lead to some problems. You might move everything in only to find that the room is so crowded with stuff you can’t easily move through it. On the other hand, you could find that you have more empty space than you thought, so you could have brought more. If possible, try taping out the size of the room in your current home and walk through it with the furniture in place. This will help figure out exactly how much space you’ll have.

How Do You Get Rid of Furniture?

Once you’ve decided some of your furniture is too worn out or simply won’t have a place in your new home, what do you do with it? Getting rid of furniture can be difficult because of how large, heavy, and awkward it is to move. If you live alone, you may simply not be physically able to haul an old chair, sofa, or bedframe out to the curb for bulk trash day.

Even if you can get help, it may still not be a simple task. You may have a sofa that has to be twisted and turned to get it out the door. It can be easy to scratch up wooden floors, bang up doorframes, or even break light fixtures while trying to move large pieces of furniture. If you’re selling the home, you have to fix all of this damage before the new owners move in. In some cases, that can be costly. For example, if your home has old tile and you broke several when trying to move out a heavy wardrobe, it can be impossible to find a perfect match. You might end up paying to have that whole section of flooring replaced.

If you’re moving from an apartment complex and live upstairs, it can be even more difficult to get old furniture out of your home and down to the curb or city dump. You not only have to maneuver the items out of your apartment, but you may also then have to get them down the stairs or to the elevator. All of this adds additional opportunities for you to break something or for someone to get hurt.

Once you get the old furniture out of your home, then what? If you only have an item or two, you may decide to set them out for bulky trash pickup. The problem is that the city doesn’t pick up large trash on a regular basis. In fact, Tucson only picks up bulky trash twice a year. If you miss your chance, you’ll be stuck with that furniture or large appliance for six more months. They also won’t pick up some items, including televisions, anything made from glass, construction materials, or anything hazardous. If you’ve had to do some remodeling before you could sell the home, some of the trash you have to get rid of may include some of these banned items.

Your other option would be to take the items to the landfill yourself, but that means having a vehicle large enough to haul them. You also have to get the old furniture up into the truck, drive to the landfill, and pay a fee.

Junk King Makes the Process a Snap

Instead of trying to deal with your old furniture and appliances on your own, just call Junk King Tucson. Our team makes the entire process much easier. We will have all of the old furniture you don’t want out of your home and loaded up into our truck in no time. You don’t have to worry about getting the furniture out of your home. We have the right equipment and skills necessary to get even the heaviest, bulkiest piece of furniture out of your home without damaging the floors, walls, or anything else.

We also take construction debris, including old flooring, cabinets, bathtubs, hot tubs, and even yard waste. If you need to do a little remodeling at your old home or at your new home in Tucson, we can get rid of any debris and trash from those projects, too. We can take glass, electronic waste including televisions and computers, and much more.
