Here’s a cool factoid for you: In 2018, the private companies handled 302,000 tons of solid waste from Washington DC, more than twice what the Department of Public Works’ trucks handled.

That facility was thankfully shut down in the late 1960s and a fancy, new landfill was built on the site which served DC residents and others for another ten years or so.
In the last five years, the city has made significant progress in developing a modern waste and recycling system that aims to reduce the waste stream by 80 percent by 2030. The current residential recycling rate is close to 30 percent after having been around 20 percent for many years.
