The day will finally come when your old mattress just isn’t working for you and you’ll buy a new one. And old mattress removal will be your next task.

The good news is that you don’t have to do it yourself and getting rid of your old mattress doesn’t have to be a major hassle.

Thinking About Mattress Removal

In the United States, old mattresses are replaced and disposed of about once every 8-11 years on average, even though many have 20-year warranties.

Did you know that:

  • More than 35 million new mattresses are shipped each year in the U.S. alone?.
  • Replacement mattresses account for 70% of those? (according to the International Sleep Products Association.)
  • Approximately 50% of old mattresses are reused by family members or resold?

And these figures mean that there are still an average of 12 to 15 million mattresses that are not reused and have to be disposed of each year. That’s a massive amount of mattresses. In fact, the Mattress Recycling Council notes that this many mattresses would cover more square miles than the state of New Mexico.

And this is happening every year! And, while there are still no laws requiring that used mattresses be recycled, three states have enacted mattress recycling laws (California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island) requiring manufacturers and retailers to include a disposal fee with mattress sales to fund the recycling of old mattresses after new ones are sold and delivered.

Mattress Removal and Disposal: Dumping or Recycling?

If you can't easily donate or sell your old mattress, that only leaves two other options. The most common impulse is to simply haul it off to the local landfill dump.

While this is a legitimate (and still legal) option, it is labor-intensive and can cost you. Most regional landfills charge a fee for each mattress (and box springs) plus you need to have a vehicle that can safely accommodate a mattress and, possibly, a set of box springs.

Fortunately, California has a law that allows residents to recycle their mattress for free, or for a small fee, through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs.

The bottom line is that you should never dump mattresses on the side of the road, however. Either drop them off at a landfill, or dispose of them through a local mattress recycling program.
