Can Mattress Disposal Be Easy?
Congratulations! You just bought a new mattress. Now you can look forward to a good night's sleep. But you also may have to look forward to old mattress disposal.
If still have your old one, you're more than likely going to need a mattress disposal solution that doesn't involve dumping it in an empty lot in the middle of the night!
Mattress Disposal: They Great for Sleeping, Not for Hauling
Everyone likes a good mattress, but no mattress is "good" when you have to pick it up and move it. They are bulky, awkward, and can be incredibly heavy. In fact, a traditional mattress can weigh anywhere from 50 to 150 pounds, depending on materials and size.
Most folks might manage transporting a twin mattress, even by themselves, but few people can haul out a California King, for example, even with someone else helping them.
And hauling a mattress out of your house or apartment isn't even half the chore!
What are you going to do with it once you have it outside? Assuming you have a truck that can accommodate your old mattress - your little hybrid sedan isn't going to work for this - you still have to know where you can take it.
It turns out that, in many locations, simply taking it to the dump is not a good option.
According to Consumers Affairs, close to 20 million mattresses end up in landfills each year, and just one mattress can take up to 40 cubic feet in a landfill, it’s important to find a responsible mattress disposal option.
Try Old Mattress Disposal With Mattress Recycling
Upgrading to a new mattress is always a great idea, considering you probably spend a third of your life sleeping on that bed. Back pain and insomnia can both be the results of a bad or worn-out mattress. But once you get that new mattress, how do you get rid of the old one? Many of our homes have old mattresses down in the basement or up in the attic, collecting dust and taking up valuable space.
Many of our homes have old mattresses down in the basement or up in the attic, collecting dust and taking up valuable space. And they are difficult to get rid of.
Many charities balk at taking old mattresses, often for sanitary reasons. Just the task of trying to load mattresses into a truck to haul off to the local landfill can be a major chore. And having it picked up by your local waste disposal management company can be time-consuming, costly and still require you to haul the thing out to the curb on the appointed day.
Fortunately, your old mattress can be recycled.
Why recycling? Because up to 90 percent of your mattress can be broken down and recycled, so recycling is definitely a better option for the environment than tossing your mattress in the dumpster, says the folks at Consumer Affairs.
In some states, you are not even allowed to - or are strongly encouraged not to - put a mattress into a landfill. Take California, for example. According to the state's recycling agency, CalRecycle,
"It is estimated that millions of mattresses and box springs reach the end of their lives in California every year. The bulky nature of mattresses and the lack of affordable, convenient recycling options has resulted in significant illegal dumping costs to local jurisdictions throughout the state. "
There are currently three states that have enacted mattress recycling laws. The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is a nonprofit organization created by the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) to develop and implement statewide mattress recycling programs for those states.
The MRC, through a program called Bye Bye Mattress, provides resources, education and support for programs in California, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
