Coronavirus, Cleaning, And Staying Safe

Coronavirus, Cleaning, And Staying Safe

With the ongoing health crisis brought on by the coronavirus known as COVID-19, keeping your surroundings clean and staying safe are paramount.

And if you or someone in your home is sick, this is an even more critical issue.

One of the pressing concerns for many people is getting rid of contaminated trash from their homes. For some, this is a bigger problem since they may be filling their residential bins more often than once a week. Which means they have to hold onto potentially hazardous waste until the weekly garbage pick up takes place.

The good news is that you can have your household trash and garbage quickly and efficiently removed and hauled off simply by giving us a call. Junk King provides an efficient, safe and eco-friendly trash removal service to make the whole process easy for you.

Sanitation and Disinfecting Best Practices

There's been a great deal of information being put out onto the news, the Internet and social media regarding avoiding infection and sanitizing our living spaces.

If you're sheltering at home, but not sick, you still want to ensure that your home is clean and safe from accidental contamination brought in from outside. Generally speaking, if no one is ill with the coronavirus COVID-19 then standard cleaning and disinfecting practices will suffice.

According to guidance from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is suggested that you practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces  such as tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, and sinks with household cleaners and EPA-registered disinfectants that are appropriate for the surface.

You should always follow label instructions for the safe and effective use of the cleaning product. Be aware of any precautions you should take when using a product, like wearing gloves and having good ventilation.

It's best to follow manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection of electronic products. If no manufacturer guidance is available, the use of alcohol-based wipes or a spray containing at least 70 percent alcohol to disinfect touch screens is recommended.  Be sure to dry all surfaces thoroughly to avoid pooling of liquids.

Sick at Home: Next Level Disinfecting

The CDC website provides the following directions for hard, or non-porous, surfaces:

  • Wear disposable gloves when cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. Gloves should be discarded after each cleaning. If reusable gloves are used, those gloves should be dedicated for cleaning and disinfection of surfaces for COVID-19 and should not be used for other purposes. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfection products used. Clean hands immediately after gloves are removed.
  • If surfaces are dirty, they should be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
  • For disinfection, most common EPA-registered household disinfectants should be effective.
    • A list of products that are EPA-approved for use against the virus that causes COVID-19 is available here. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection products.
    • Additionally, diluted household bleach solutions can be used if appropriate for the surface. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application, ensuring a contact time of at least 1 minute, and allowing proper ventilation during and after application. Check to ensure the product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. Unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted.
  • Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:
    • 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water or
    • 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water

For soft, or porous, surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, clean any visible areas of contamination, if present, with appropriate cleaners for use on these surfaces. After cleaning, launder the items, if possible, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items. Be sure to dry items completely.

If the item cannot be laundered, then use products that are EPA-approved for use against the virus that causes COVID-19 and that are suitable for porous surfaces.
