COVID-19: Staying Safe After A Vaccine

COVID-19: Staying Safe After A Vaccine

Finally, the vaccines the world's been waiting for are here. But do you know how to stay safe after your COVID-19 vaccination?

There are many myths and misconceptions about post-vaccination practices. Stay informed.

I Got the Shots. Now What?

One of the common and understandable misconception regarding the COVID-19 vaccine is that it means no more masks and other safe practices

Not true!

In fact, it’s still critically important for everyone to continue using all the tools available for stopping the pandemic as experts learn how the COVID-19 vaccines work in real-world conditions.

That means that everyone should continue to:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others
  • Stay at least 6 feet away from others
  • Avoid crowds
  • Avoid poorly ventilated spaces
  • Wash your hands often

According to the Mayo Clinic website,

"After you get both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, it takes about two weeks for your body to build up protection. But even then you could become infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. Keep in mind that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is 95% effective in preventing the COVID-19 virus. The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is 94.1% effective in preventing the COVID-19 virus. While your risk of getting the COVID-19 virus after being vaccinated is low, it is possible."

It's also not clear yet if the COVID-19 vaccines actually helps reduce the spread of the virus. As a result, it's not known if a person who is vaccinated could be a carrier of the COVID-19 virus and spread it to others, even if he or she doesn't become sick.

Which means that even after you've been vaccinated you could still pose a health risk to your unvaccinated family and friends by visiting with them in person.  And the risks of serious illness from COVID-19 are highest for people who are older.

The bottom line is that with or without COVID-19 vaccinations, the best way to stay safe is to continue to follow safety precautions and consider avoiding in-person visits with friends and family until more is known about the immunity the vaccines provide.

What to Expect after Getting a COVID-19 Vaccine

According to information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) receiving the COVID-19 vaccination will help protect you from getting COVID-19.

It's important to know that you may have some side effects after the vaccination, which are normal signs that your body is building protection. These side effects may affect your ability to carry out daily activities, but they should go away after a few days.

Common side effects on the arm where you got the shot:

  • Pain
  • Swelling

Common side effects in the rest of your body:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Tiredness
  • Headache

According to the CDC website,

"If you have pain or discomfort, talk to your doctor about taking over-the-counter medicine, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, antihistamines, or acetaminophen, for any pain and discomfort you may experience after getting vaccinated. You can take these medications to relieve post-vaccination side effects if you have no other medical reasons that prevent you from taking these medications normally."

With most COVID-19 vaccines, you will need two shots in order for them to work.

Be sure to get your second shot as close to the recommended 3-week or 1-month interval as possible. This is important even if you have side effects after the first shot, unless a vaccination provider or your doctor tells you not to get a second shot.

Remember that it takes time for your body to build protection after any vaccination and COVID-19 vaccines that require two shots may not protect you until a week or two after your second shot.
