E waste pick up isn’t just for businesses. If you’ve committed to the KonMari method and are knee-deep in items that no longer spark joy in your life, scheduling junk and e waste pick up can make fast work of disposing your items in a smart, sustainable way.
On January 1, 2019, Netflix released the first season of “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” Based on the New York Times Best Seller “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,” the series follows the book’s author, Japanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo, as she helps eight households apply her KonMari method to decluttering their homes and lives.
To those unfamiliar with Kondo’s work, the program and its methods may have been seen as a novelty or fad, but those who were featured on the show and those who applied the method after reading the book report otherwise. This may be due to the manner in which Kondo instructs adopters of the KonMari method to view their possessions and the relationship they have with them.
Unlike the methods that preceded KonMari, Kondo’s approach is rooted in spirituality, and inspired by Japanese religion Shinto. As Kondo enters each home, she greets it. As acolytes consider each object, they are instructed to hold it and determine if it “sparks joy.” Items they keep will be put away in a particular manner that displays and respects them, while discarded items are thanked and discarded with love. To American audiences unfamiliar with her process or the spiritual beliefs that inspired it, cynicism may have been the knee jerk reaction, but many who watched found it replaced by inspiration.
When one declutters their home, their clutter needs to go somewhere, however. This could be considered a boon for charitable organizations who rely on second hand donations; indeed, just as they did in 2015 after her book became popular with American readers, donations of used items surged after the 2019 Netflix releasee.
Spikes in charitable donations are not atypical, and can be expected at certain times of year. The positive aspects of surges in charitable giving, especially when thousands of people are partaking at once, have their downsides, however. It takes time and manpower for items to be collected and sorted, and overflowing donation bins can overextend foundation budgets. The quality of items donated can also be a concern. In their zest for tidying up,sme have have treated donation bins as dumpsters, putting the onus on charities to sort through and discard their soiled, broken, or unusable items.
E Waste Pick Up and the KonMari Method
Tidying up” the Marie Kondo way doesn’t just lead to increases in paper waste and clothing donations, it also leads to increases in e waste. E waste, or electronic waste, encompasses electronic devices which are at or near the end of their useful life and destined for disposal. This term also applies to electronic devices or devices with electronic components which may be recycled.
The world is already experiencing an e-waste crisis, with many of our electronic devices becoming obsolete and requiring replacement at expanding rates. Many small and large appliances and household items are also evolving to contain more electronic components as they take on “smart” qualities. The rare earth materials used to create these devices and components are finite, which means recycling them is necessary. There are also hazardous materials which need to be removed and disposed of properly to ensure that they don’t contaminate the environment.
While many states mandate e waste recycling and manufacturers offer buyback or recycling programs that can help facilitate the process, the focus on getting clutter out of the house when one adopts a step-by-step approach can lead to disposal decisions that value speed above all else.
For Kondo’s part, her stance on responsible disposal is clear, and she lists responsible disposal options and links for her adherents to complete research on her website. She also promotes sustainability throughout the organizing of one’s home and in other areas of day to day life. Unfortunately, not everyone recognizes the dangers of casual e waste disposal, and these items and other hazardous materials end up in landfills.
While many items may be able to be sold second hand, donated, or recycled, a method such as KonMari promotes taking each step in order. According to KonMari.com, they are:
- Commit yourself to tidying up
- Imagine your ideal lifestyle
- Finish discarding first
- Tidy by category, not by location
- Follow the right order
- Clothes
- Books
- Papers
- Komoro (miscellany)
- Sentimental items
- Ask yourself if it sparks joy
Notably, disposing of all items comes before putting items away and reorganizing your space. For those who are enthusiastic about the process and attaining a clean, un-cluttered, organized space, the time it takes to deal with each item on its own can present frustration and lead to disposal methods that are less than ideal.
The solution is e waste pick up
Scheduling junk removal and e waste pick up is a smart, sustainable approach to decluttering that helps you ensure that the items that no longer spark joy for you are disposed of responsibly. E waste in particular poses a threat to human and environmental health when improperly disposed of. Improper e waste disposal also results in the loss of valuable materials that could have been recycled rather than mined.
Many states have passed legislation requiring e waste recycling, so consumers should make sure that their e waste pick up service adheres to state and local laws when recycling e waste and other items. Doing so is not only the smart choice for the planet, but for your decluttering efforts, too. By working with a trustworthy company with a proven track record of sustainable methods, you can get rid of all your junk with one phone call instead of researching each item, assessing its parts and condition, and scheduling multiple appointments. With junk and e waste pick up, one phone call does it all so you can move on to the next step of our decluttering mission.
