Fall Landscaping And Yard Waste Removal

Fall Landscaping And Yard Waste Removal

[This article was originally published in October 2020 and has been updated and revised.]

It's not unusual to think of spring as the time for landscaping projects and the yard debris removal that entails. But early fall is actually a better time for it.

And, unlike summer months, for example, the weather is nicer and the harshness of winter hasn't quite taken hold. That means both homeowners and their landscaping elements fare better.

The Best Time to Re-Do Your Home's Landscaping?

While spring and even summer have been considered traditional seasons for landscaping projects, many horticulturists and landscape designers look to early fall.

In fact, as an article from the HIC of Staten Island points out,

"As early fall lends itself to cooler temperatures and lower humidity, it is the most favorable, and most comfortable time of the year to embark on your landscaping project. Planting trees, shrubs and perennials in the fall allows for them to establish their root system so they are strong when spring arrives. More developed root systems help plants perform better in the summer, more so than those planted in the spring.

Planting in fall will help improve your chances of a successful installation, as will knowing the right way to plant and water."

Depending on where you live, of course, you can plant just about anything in the fall.

The often favorable soil temperatures and moisture conditions in the fall help promote root growth that sustains plants during the critical first year in the ground. This also means they will establish strong root systems by springtime spring rolls around.

Fall is also a great time to plant certain 'cold tolerant' annuals such as Osaka, Osteospermum, and  Diasica.

Because temperatures are typically mild, new planting can get established with no stress. And, once it does start getting cooler, plants complete their growing cycle and get ready to hibernate.

In addition, minimal growth and temperate conditions, means minimal supervision.

Fall Planting Means Strong Plants

You can be confident that the work you put into new plantings, and any transplants you put back into the ground, will be more easily established and stronger if done in the fall.

As one blog puts it,

"Planting in the Fall Leads to Explosive Growth in Spring
The reason why fall is the best time to do landscaping is because your plants will have time to prepare for a productive growing season in spring. Transplanting during the spring means your plants will have to devote more energy to getting acclimated and surviving. If they can get comfortable during the fall, 100% of their energy can go toward growing in the spring.

A Strong Root Network Increases Longevity
Plants may not grow as much during the fall, but they won’t go into hibernation until the conditions get too cold in the winter. Although you may not see any flowering during the fall, a lot of good things can happen underground. As a plant’s roots get thicker and their network expands, they become much stronger."

In addition to the benefits of re-doing your landscaping - or creating a first-time landscape design - during this time of year, doing all that work is far more comfortable now.

No one wants to spend their time out in the summer sun laboring away in the yard or their exposed flower beds, and so on.

And even early spring can be chilly, not to mention wet. For the most part and in most regions in the U.S., early fall can be a prime time of year for this kind of work.

The USDA provides a wealth of information regarding "hardiness" zones across the United States for guiding gardeners and others for planting.

And then there's all the organic debris, yard waste, and assorted trash and junk that accumulates in the course of your landscaping efforts. All that "stuff" has to be hauled away and disposed of.

If it doesn't fit in your residential trash and recycling bins, what do you do with it?

Fall Landscaping, Yard Waste, and Removal Options

Sure, you could possibly burn your leaves, branches, and other "yard stuff" that you've piled up. Except that, in most places these days, outdoor burning is extremely controlled and limited or banned completely.

And this is especially true for all those who live in more suburban and urban neighborhoods.

Which means that burning your yard waste is likely not an option. And that one green recycling bin - if you even have one - may not hold enough to allow you to get rid of everything in one load.

And who wants to keep filling the thing up week after week until all the waste is finally cleared up?

Besides, some communities only get recycling service pickup every two weeks. And some waste management providers do not allow yard waste to be placed in the one recycling bin they provide to customers.

So, if that's the case for you, what are your options?

If you have a truck or maybe even a small, flatbed trailer you could possibly load it all up and haul it way yourself. And that certainly doesn't include most people. Renting or borrowing a pickup truck just for loading, hauling, and unloading mounds of yard waste and debris isn't a practical solution for many people.

And, even if you could do that, knowing how and where to properly dispose of the variety of waste items and debris you've collected can be a challenge.

Far easier, perhaps, is to have someone else do this part of the job for you.

You might consider hiring one of those local guys to come by with their old pickup truck and take it away for you, but that can be a sketchy proposition many times. These often well-meaning vendors are rarely bonded or insured. Nor will you know where or how they actually dispose of your waste and debris.

And no one wants to be an unwitting accomplice to illegal dumping!

Better to hire a professional waste and junk removal team that is both insured and highly trained, and comes with clean, large capacity trucks.
