It's Time For Your Spring Yard Cleanup
Spring is here and it's time to get out there and clean up your yard after the long winter. And if your outdoor area is relatively large, you'll likely have quite a bit of yard waste to dispose of.
At some point once the debris and bags begin to pile up, the question becomes, "How do I get rid of all this stuff?"
For many homeowners and renters in 2020, the arrival of spring may not mean baseball unfortunately, but with the warmer weather it's still a good opportunity to get their yards back in shape.
Some will get to do more than others depending on where they live and what they can do outside of the house, but the yard work is the same: mowing, cutting, pruning, trimming and piling. Along with all the green waste, branchs and roots, there will likely be quite a bit of other junk to get rid of.
Like what, you ask?
Perhaps old law furniture that's seen it's final winter, broken fence boards, yard art and decor that has passed it's useful life (think yard gnomes and plastic flamingos!), and maybe even an old fountain, hot tub, or remains of deck.
Cleaning Your Personal Great Outdoors
Okay, so tasks like mowing the lawn, picking up all the dead branches and leaves, trimming, pruning, and waking - those are all fairly straightforward and relatively simple actions. Not easy, mind you, but not rocket science.
But there is a long list of potential cleaning and repairing chores that could be done, as well. This can include your home's exterior elements such as decks, patios and gutters. If you have a chimney this should be inspected and cleaned. In addition, there are some major areas and features should be cleaned once winter has passed.
Here's a handy checklist to help you cover all the cleaning items that may need to be addressed in between your landscaping and lawn maintenance:
Windows
If you have a single story home this can be relatively easy though a two (or three!) story house can be far more challenging.
- Work in the shade to keep the cleaner from drying out too quickly
- A 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water makes a great natural window cleaner
- Use crumpled up newspaper instead of paper towels to clean and dry windows
Siding
For most siding, a pressure washer can make quick work of cleaning the outside of your home, but be careful since the extremely high pressure can damage wood and other softer materials. Also, if you have vinyl siding, avoid the pressure washer as it can push water behind the siding panels, possibly causing mold or rot later.
Scrubbing isn't necessary with a pressure washer, but adding specially formulated detergent to the water will help loosen dirt and grime. Be sure to use a product that is made for pressure washers and intended for your home's siding you’re cleaning.
Deck
If you have a wooden deck you know that it needs to be cleaned periodically, like in the spring, for example.
- Apply specially formulated deck cleaner using a pump sprayer
- Use a pressure washer or a long handled scrub brush to clean the wood surfaces
- Rinse the deck thoroughly and allow it to dry
- If you want to refinish you deck, apply a sealer or stain using a pump sprayer. Smooth out the material with a brush and allow it to dry thoroughly before using the deck
Sidewalks and Driveway
There are a number of methods for cleaning sidewalks and driveways. Here's a simple checklist from TodaysHomeowner.com:
- Start by removing any grass or weeds that are encroaching on the driveway or growing in cracks.
- Follow this by a thorough cleaning with a pressure washer to remove dirt and grime.
- Next, patch any cracks or holes in concrete surfaces with a concrete resurfacer.
- Worn asphalt drives can be restored by applying a coat of latex asphalt sealer to make them look good as new..
Depending on where you live getting rid of cobwebs is another cleaning task. This is a good time to look for and remove any old wasp nests and other "structures" left by insects, birds and other creatures.
Most people never think about their garage door needing cleaned, but it, too, can build up grime and even mold or mildew. For most doors you can use the same tools you use to wash your car. If you do choose to use a pressure washer, though, be careful not to get water into your garage.
The Need for Yard Waste Disposal
Of course, all this work will result not only in an attractive and inviting outdoor area, but piles of yard waste, debris and assorted junk that will need to be disposed of. Some of it might fit in your "green" waste bin, but if you end up with a large amount of yard waste, you need a better disposal option.
Maybe you've never considered calling a professional junk hauling firm for your yard waste.
Actually, it's a great option!
In fact, by calling Junk King, for example, we will remove almost every type of yard debris and waste, such as branches, clippings, stumps, soil, sod and other landscaping debris. The only thing we can't pick up for you is anything that is hazardous waste.
Aside from that, you might also have some old debris hanging around from previous home repairs or renovations.
No worries! We also pick up and haul sheet rock, door frames, windows, shingles and even corrugated metal or plastic.
Because junk can accumulate over the previous seasons, you want to get rid of it before another winter comes around. Spring is an especially good time to go through your yard and property and do some thorough cleaning up. If you’re a gardener, it’s time to break out your tools and mulch.
Of course, this means that you’re going to have piles of empty bags, unwanted yard and garden items and maybe even old lawn furniture that you just don't want any more.
And it’s likely that you may already have bags of yard waste, like branches, mulch or clippings, that kept piling up through the fall and winter. Having to take them to the dump is time consuming and burdensome – and that’s you even have a vehicle that can handle it all.
