On The Trail Of Paper Recycling

On The Trail Of Paper Recycling

Most of us recycle and along with plastic and aluminum, recycling paper waste is probably the most common thing we do. But where does all that paper go?

We know that some of it becomes new products made from recycled paper, but is that all there is to it? And does it really pay for us to take the time to recycle paper?

We Live in a World That is Inundated with Paper

Some of us are old enough to remember when the prognosticators and prophets of technology were telling us that the age of the "paperless" office would soon be upon us. Well, many of us are still waiting for that one!

In the meantime, we are producing, using, and disposing of more paper today than ever before.

Between copier paper, books, magazines, newspapers, and similar items, the United States produces almost 30 million tons every year. And, if you count ALL the paper goods that are made each year in our country, it's estimated that the total is more than 70 million tons of paper and paperboard.

And almost all of that gets thrown away eventually.

Paper products like coffee cups, napkins, tissues, paper towels, and so on are disposed of as soon as they are used. Other paper material like newsprint, copier paper, and notebook paper may hang around a little longer, but eventually almost all of it ends up in the trash.

And that's where things get interesting.

While not every type of waste paper product can be efficiently recycled,  gob loads of it does. And that's a really good thing because waste paper sitting around decomposing in landfills is not a very good thing apparently.

According to one paper recycling firm in the UK,

"Paper biodegrading in landfill creates methane which is 23 times more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide. Landfill has been found to contribute to as much as 50-75% of the total carbon emissions over a typical paper lifecycle."

The good news is that, although there are still millions of tons of waste paper products ending up in our landfills every year, the volume is decreasing and the quantity of recycled paper is increasing.

As are the variety (and quality) of new products made from mostly or 100 percent recycled paper.

Recycling Matters and Recycling Paper is Something We All Can Do

Have you ever wondered what happens to all that paper waste you so conscientiously put into your recycling cans and bins every day and week?

The recycling of paper is not only a multi-billion dollar industry, it is also one of the largest blocks of industrial recycling efforts in the economy of recovered materials.

Here is a graphic that illustrates some of the more pertinent facts and statistics concerning the realm of waste paper recycling.

We may never truly see a paperless office unless we choose to work from home and dispense with all copier paper, notebooks, and other materials made from paper or cardboard. But even that's not very likely.

However, we may see the day when ALL of the waste paper produced in this country is recycled or disposed of with a truly green and environmentally beneficial process.

In the meantime, all of us can contribute significantly and materially by choosing to "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" as much as possible - especially when it comes to paper products. And when you find yourself with more paper waste than you can safely place in a recycling bin, you don't have to make a special trip to the dump or to some commercial recycling dumpster in the dark of night.
