Summer Fun And Travel: Keep It Safe And Keep It Cool
Summer 2022 is playing out to be a memorable one, but not all for good reasons. Staying safe and keeping cool is essential for enjoying your summertime.
Hydrating, staying indoors, reducing activities - these are good tips, but you still have to work, go to places, and enjoy life. So, how do you do that safely and still have summer fun?
There's More to Summer Than 'Living Easy'
Summer vacations are great. When you're on them. But summer is long and we're not all "on a vacation" for three months.
And we have to live our regular routines throughout the rest of the summer despite the heat, the droughts, and the assorted epidemics and other issues. And some summers seem to be a bit more challenging than others.
This summer, for example, has seen record high temperatures. And continuing drought is being experienced in more than 90 percent of the country, with almost 50 percent of the nation under severe to extreme drought.
Oh, and did we mention COVID-19 and something called monkeypox virus?
Between the heat, the water issues, high gas prices, continuing "supply chain" problems, and the ongoing struggle to avoid coronavirus variants, summer can seem more like running a gauntlet or an obstacle course each day than a vacation!
But the good news is that you can be safe, be healthy, and enjoy your summer, as well.
Summertime: Be Cool, Be Safe, and Have Fun
"In the summertime, when the weather is hot
You can stretch right up and touch the sky"
- Song by Mungo Jerry 1970
Of course, when it's triple-digit temperatures outside for the umpteenth day in a row, no one feels much like reaching for the sky. More like reaching for another water bottle!
And that's exactly what you should be doing. Staying sufficiently hydrated is one of the most critical actions we can take during the heat of summer. That, and keeping covered as much as possible.
Of course, that's a hard one since the inclination is to wear shorts and sleeveless tops, if possible. But, not to sound like a nagging grandmother, minimizing direct exposure to the sun's UV rays is critical in avoiding painful sunburn as well as skin cancer.
Here are some other great tips for summer safety:
Of course, you could simply stay indoors 24/7 and have your food delivered to you while you continue to work remotely. But working remotely is one thing - "living" remotely isn't really practical nor is it really living!
Besides, despite the murmurings of doom and gloom, it's really not that bad out there. But you do want to be aware and take precautions.
Play It Safe this Summer and Avoid the Summertime Blues
As we've said before, a large part of staying safe and staying cool is simply paying attention, being aware, and being intentional.
It's certainly possible to go on summer vacations or stay home and play, and still have a fun-filled and memorable summer!
And here are some additional tips and recommendations from the CDC to help make that happen:
- Limit your outdoor activity, especially midday when the sun is hottest.
- Pace your activity. Start activities slowly and pick up the pace gradually.
- Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more. Muscles cramping may be an early sign of heat-related illness.
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as you can.
- Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.
- Limit use of the stove and oven—it will make you and your house hotter.
