When Flooding Turns Belongings Into Junk

When Flooding Turns Belongings Into Junk

2020 was a tough year on a number of levels. But 2021 has seen ongoing COVID-19, wildfires, and often unprecedented flooding. And it's not over yet.

Unlike wildfires, flooding usually doesn't consume a structure and everything in it. Instead, it tends to simply destroy everything in place.

When Flooding Leaves You with Damaged Possessions or Goods

Flooding is notorious for inundating homes and businesses with inexorable rising water levels and then simply receding to leave behind either complete devastation or, in many cases, just costly water damage.

Regardless of the extent of the flooding, furniture, carpets, shop equipment, retail goods, and other items that are destroyed or damaged by flood waters must be replaced.

And the cost can be crippling.

In fact, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),

"In 2021 (as of October 8), there have been 18 weather/climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each to affect the United States. These events included 1 drought event, 2 flooding events, 9 severe storm events, 4 tropical cyclone events, 1 wildfire event, and 1 winter storm event. Overall, these events resulted in the deaths of 538 people and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted. "

NOAA's website goes on to note that in the 40 years between 1980 and 2020, the annual average for disaster events in the United States has only been around seven per year.  However, over just the last five years prior to 2021, the actual number has been more than 16 events per year, on average.

In addition, disaster events in the U.S. up to September of 2021 have cost the country over $102 billion so far - and that's not counting the drought in the Western States nor the wildfires this year.

For individual residents and business owners in flood-stricken regions, the cost is compounded by the need to not only replace what was lost or damaged, but by the costs of removing and getting rid of all the damaged items and materials.

When You Need Help Getting Rid of Your Flood Damaged Junk

The last thing anyone who is a victim of disastrous (or even not-so-disastrous) flooding needs is more excessive costs for services.

Flooding is an expensive blow for residents and businesses alike, not to mention government agencies and insurances companies. And a large percentage of structures in the United States are at risk of flooding.

According to a report from NPR,

"More than 4 million houses and small apartment buildings across the contiguous U.S. have substantial risk of expensive flood damage, according to data released by the First Street Foundation, a nonprofit research organization that studies flood risk and housing. The cost of flood damage to homes nationwide will increase by more than 50% in the next 30 years, the First Street Foundation estimates."

Once you factor in that there were approximately 140.8 million housing units in the United States in 2020, that means that more than 3 percent of homes and apartment buildings are at high risk. But this doesn't exclude many of the rest that are only at a slight to moderate risk.

Nor does that include Alaska and Hawaii, the latter state having been devastated by flooding earlier this year, as well.

What all these states, cities, and structure owners have in common is the need to quickly and cost-effectively remove the water-damaged junk from their buildings.

Which is why Junk King specializes in bulk junk removal of all types.
