When Junk Removal Becomes A Recycling Project

When Junk Removal Becomes A Recycling Project

when-junk-removal-becomes-a-recycling-project

Not everything that gets hauled away as junk has to go to a landfill. In fact, most of your residential junk removal items can be recycled. It's up to you.

Hauling your household junk and debris to a waste transfer station or landfill doesn't need to be your default approach for junk removal. You have options.

Why Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is More Than a Nice Saying

According to one source, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tells us that about 75 percent of the waste stream generated in the United States is recyclable. However, only about 30 percent of the total waste stream materials are actually recycled.

An article at USAFacts noted,

"Americans recycled or composted about 32% of all municipal solid waste in 2018, the last year EPA data is available. That adds up to about 94 million tons of waste for the year. Another 11.8% or 35 million tons of waste was combusted with energy recovery a process of converting waste into heat, electricity, or fuel through combustion."

All of which means that almost 100 million tons of waste - junk, garbage, and debris - goes directly to our nations' landfills. And that's not counting to percentage of materials like plastics that end up in our oceans along with other junk and trash items that are found scattered around the country.

Part of the problem lies with the municipal waste management systems used through the U.S.

Many recyclables become contaminated by being placed in the wrong bin, or when a dirty food containers are put into the recycling bin. This type of contamination can prevent large amounts of material from being recycled.

And then there are some materials can’t be processed in certain facilities.

Not every recycling collection process is the same and some are more efficient and effective than others. Take the single-stream recycling approach, for example.

According to a report from the Columbia Climate School,

"Single-stream recycling, where all recyclables are placed into the same bin, has made recycling easier for consumers, but results in about one-quarter of the material being contaminated."

Adding to the recycling problem is the overwhelming quantities of plastic waste that is created in the United States.

The same report goes on to note,

"Although companies that make and sell plastic push the idea that recycling is the answer to the plastic pollution problem, six times more plastic waste is incinerated than is recycled. The CEO of Recology, a company that collects and processes municipal solid waste, wrote in a 2018 op-ed, “The simple fact is, there is just too much plastic—and too many different types of plastics being produced; and there exist few, if any, viable end markets for the material.” Moreover, because of the glut of natural gas and the resulting boom in U.S. petrochemical production, virgin plastic is now cheaper than recycled plastic."

And, while it may seem a little different to think of a professional junk removal service as a "recycling" service, calling on Junk King can be a far more efficient, convenient, and even cost-effective option than trying to do it yourself.

That's because we have the resources, the vehicles, the manpower, and the industry connections and alliances for making green junk removal and disposal fast and easy.

And when you've got far more junk and debris than you can load and haul on your own, that's simply another good reason to call in the pros!

Together We Can Make Junk Removal a Recycling Project

By contributing our efforts on an individual level, a corporate level, and a municipal level, we can successfully increase recycling rates to Zero Waste levels.

And, what do people mean by "Zero Waste"?

According to the EPA,

"Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them."

In states like California, the home of Junk King, several cities are succeeding in bringing their collective efforts to the level of Zero Waste and seeing huge reductions in the amount of waste going into landfills.

For example, the Columbia report noted that Los Angeles recycles almost 80 percent of its waste, with a goal to recycle 90 percent by 2025. Restaurants are required to compost their food waste, and companies get a break on their taxes based on how much they recycle. In addition, an initiative called “Rethink LA” helps residents understand the importance of recycling and composting."

And closer to home,

"San Francisco, which has set a zero waste goal for 2020, keeps 80 percent of its waste out of landfills. The city requires residents and companies to separate their waste into three streams, employing blue bins for recyclables, green for compostables (the city diverts 80 percent of its food waste) and black for material intended for the landfill. Food vendors have to use compostable or recyclable containers, and every event in San Francisco must offer recycling and composting."
