When Spring Cleaning Means Mattress Removal
Okay, so maybe spring cleaning and mattress removal rarely show up in the same sentence. But early spring is a great time for both tasks.
Sometimes our mattresses need quite a bit more than just another "airing out" and a new mattress might be just the thing.
Why Think "New Mattress" in the Spring
If you desperately need to replace your old mattress, any time of year is a good time to buy a new one. But if you simply want to purchase a replacement before your current mattress becomes too worn or broken down to be comfortable, this is a great time of year for that.
According to an article at CreditDonkey.com,
"Spring, and especially Memorial Day weekend, brings great seasonal deals on mattresses. Major retailers offer sales and discounts of up to 60% off as they make room for next year's inventory."
The same article also notes that retailers offer discounts to make room for new models between February and May.
So, yes, right now is quite likely a great time to go shopping for that new mattress. And if you're deep into or preparing to start a your annual spring cleaning project that's all the more reason to pull the trigger.
Of course, if you're not experienced in the art of mattress shopping, or you're completely lost with all the different options in stores and online, there is help.
Thinking About Mattress Buying
How do you know it’s time for a new mattress? Here are four indicators to clue you in:
It’s breaking down
Some typical signs of mattress wear:
- Lumps or dips
- Center lower than sides
- Noticeably softer or more firm
- Visible wear and tear
Waking up with pain
Regularly waking up with aches and pains, especially lower back pain, can be due to poor body support from an aging mattress.
Less “deep sleep”
Typical signs of insufficient deep sleep:
- Tired throughout the day
- More dozing than deep sleep
- Waking up frequently in different positions
Sleep better in other beds
This can mean your own mattress is no longer work for you.
Of course, the age of your mattress matters, as well.
According to Sleep Foundation,
"Most mattresses should last between 7 and 10 years. However, there are many variables that can influence mattress lifespan. The original build quality of the mattress, the materials used, and even the weight and sleeping styles of the sleepers can all influence a bed’s longevity."
So, if yours is a mid-range quality mattress and it's been almost 10 years since you bought it, you can pretty much assume it's prime time for buying a replacement.
Got a New Mattress? What About the Old One?
This is the other side of the coin, so to speak, of mattress buying - you often have to get rid of your old mattress yourself. While some brick-and-mortar mattress retailers will take your old mattress away for you, not all do. And very few if any of the online mattress dealers can do that.
You can probably guess that your old mattress isn't going to fit into any trash bin. And you likely cannot just leave it on the curb for your weekly waste management folks to pick up. No, you have to be a bit more strategic than that.
We've put together a short guide for mattress removal here:
When you've exhausted your options, or you already know your old mattress isn't a good candidate for selling, donating, or even giving away to family or friends, then you need to find a way to dispose of it.
You could do it yourself, but this means having a suitable vehicle for transporting your mattress. It's not going to fit in the back of your SUV, sorry. And you also need to know where to dispose of it properly.
Or you could call your local Junk King team and simply let them do all the work!
And once you've gotten the old mattress out and your new bed is all put together, you can finish your big spring cleaning project and look forward to a well-earned and quality night's sleep.
